Quick question[edit]

Hi! File:John H. Lowe.jpg needs clarification. According to the source, the surname is spelled Lowe. Is that a mistake by the Boston Post? Thanks for your time! C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 03:50, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Hedwig in Washington: Thanks for removing the extra period in name. Per Low's Obituary and FamilySearch the correct spelling of his last name is Low not Lowe. --Greg Henderson (talk) 14:29, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done Moved again, this time to the correct name. Thanks for your patience! C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:05, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Carmel[edit]

Hi Greg,

You are the only person I have come across on the Commons who is from Carmel, or anywhere for that matter. I consider myself as being "from Carmel" though not born there, and looking at the chart of your ancestors, I was in the UK the very year you were born! Thought I would mention that Hank Ketcham and Jean Arthur lived in Carmel, and although Ernest K. Gann's Wikipedia article says he lived in Pebble Beach, his kids (Steven Gann and Polly Gann) went to Carmel High School like me.

I was always told that this was Jean Arthur's house. Do you know if this is true? Krok6kola (talk) 17:10, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Krok6kola: Yes, I was born in Carmel and went to school at Robert Louise Stevenson School in Pebble Beach. Lately, I have writing about this history of Carmel and some of the early founders. In terms of the Butterfly House, it appears is is owned by Comollis family and was built in 1950 by Frank Wynkoop. There are some good articles about it at: here and also here. Good luck with your efforts! Greg Henderson (talk)

"(play)" categories[edit]

Would suggest avoiding the creation of category names like Category:Hamlet (play), when the category is for one specific production. Every other production in history could be filed under "Hamlet (play)"!

I've renamed that one to Category:Hamlet (Forest Theater Society production). Lord Belbury (talk) 17:21, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Lord Belbury: Thanks! You are right. I like the Category:Twelfth Night (Forest Theater Society production) you created. Thanks for making the updates. Anothe way to do this is to create the category by year, for example, Category:Twelfth Night (1911 play). What do you think? Greg Henderson (talk) 19:09, 9 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It depends what the category is intended to contain. Looking around similar categories the convention might be "Category:Twelfth Night (1911)", for photos of all productions that year. I think using "(1911 play)" might be confusing for reading like a different play with the same title had been written that year. --Lord Belbury (talk) 08:03, 10 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to licensing
Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content: images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose.

File:Ira "Rem" Remsen.jpg seems to be free (or it would be proposed for deletion), but it was identified as having a wrong license. Usually, it is because a public domain image is tagged with a free license, or because the stated source or other information is not sufficient to prove the selected tag is correct. Please verify that you applied the correct license tag for this file.

If you believe this file has the correct license, please explain why on the file discussion page.

Thanks for uploading File:Chateau Coralini Front Enterence.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Was this distinct from the Shaw play of the same name? Or was it just a production (possibly an adaptation) of that play? - Jmabel ! talk 21:28, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, @Jmabel: , this is a 1922 production of George Bernard Shaw's play produced at the Forest Theater in Carmel by Edward G. Kuster. Greg Henderson (talk) 15:47, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So I presume the same true for the similar category for Arms and the Man. Any others? - Jmabel ! talk 16:00, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, let me know if I can make anything more clear? Greg Henderson (talk) 16:42, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Besides the Shakespeare and Shaw plays, are others of these Forest Theater productions pre-existing plays? - Jmabel ! talk 17:16, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also, since you seem to be pretty much the only person who worked on these categories, we might be able to save some time: I've nominated the two productions of Shaw plays for category renames. If what I've proposed works for you, can we skip the formal process on other similar moves? - Jmabel ! talk 17:18, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am in agreement with you. I think the "Forest Theater year production" as a general template change for this and future categories dealing with the Forest Theater plays. The only problem I see is that all the "play" categories under Category:Forest Theater (Carmel, California) will have the same "suffix" "Forest Theater year production." Greg Henderson (talk) 17:31, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't seem to me to be a problem at all, assuming each of those does, indeed, represent a single production. - Jmabel ! talk 21:04, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

Caesar and Cleopatra (1922 play) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Wikidata entry for Category:Postcards published by Illustrated Post Card Co.[edit]

Hi. Do we really need Wikidata entries for "postcards by publisher" categories? Because they seem kind of pointless or at least totally redundant if I'm being honest. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 17:43, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your question. It is common to add a wikidata category that you want to directly upload too. Otherwise, you have to add the category during the upload. You can see this method here: Category:Photographs by Ansel Adams and in other sub-categories. Greg Henderson (talk) 17:56, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. I wasn't aware that it worked that way. I just don't like having the same information repeated a bunch of times in the categories page on Commons. People already know it's a category for "Postcards published by Illustrated Post Card Co." by the title. Repeating it multiple times in the infobox is just pointless and distracting. The point in an infobox is to contain information. Not just be a heading. That's just my thoughts on it though. But I'd like to not see it not become a trend that every minor category for postcards has an infobox or Wikidata entry. There's enough to keep track of and maintain already. --Adamant1 (talk) 18:00, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Did you do up a ticket request thingy for that file and how long will it take for a response? 194.223.31.30 01:12, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The file File:Southern Pacific SD7 was deleted by a Wikipedia admin because the correct permission was not received by thw owner of the file the Center for Railroad Photography & Art. I got permision to use the file but looks like something went wrong, e.g. John C. Illman or his family needed to provide permission. Greg Henderson (talk) 01:50, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have plans to reupload it or are you going to submit a request for undeletion? 194.223.31.30 03:34, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since the owner of the image is not willing to provide permission to use it, there is no plan to undelete or submit it again, unless you know otherwise. Greg Henderson (talk) 14:30, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
