Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

GorillaWarfare is "hovering" over http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sanello[edit]

Collapsed rant with personal attacks

Every day i get multiple talk page messages from Gorilla. She banned me from the help room a couple of days ago. now she's demanding proof that I own the pic of my dog on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sanello http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Sanello.

I took the pic with my cell phone! Wiki's guidelines say Wiki will delete a pic if it looks professional?!?

I got a B in college photography class. I was an A student in everything else. The pic of me and my dogs is NOT professional, but thanks for the back-handed comment.

Gorilla has been bossing me around everywhere I turn. This AM if found a dozen outrageous errors I asked someone to fix for me instead of the quicker proccess of editing my bio myself.

Some editor who didn't sign his edit repeated "the" two times consecutively.

Hitler was misspelled multiple times in my bio as Hilter.

consequently was misspelled. Don't believe me, Gorilla? Check out my page you've been "hovering" a Wiki no-no since I started editing all the formatting, grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that Gorilla and other "can't see the trees for the forest" :) Wiki editors.

While Gorilla is obsessing about format, picture rights and chat room etiquete, she is missing major errors. See my talk page pointing all the errors I found and had to ask a NPOV Wikiperson to change because nonsenseferret, Mlpearce and others have made mistakes on MY page.

This is not promotional, COIC or a violation of NPOV. It's sloppy copy editing. I get paid $50/hour to copy edit other people's drivel, but I'm a self-supporting full-time article, and i don't have time to patrol MY bio every AM. Awful way to start the day!

I give up. Gorilla will probably ban me permanently from Wikipedia. She's an authoritarian personality type.

This is my LAST communication with her or Mlpearce, a high-school dropout by his own permission who thinks he's qualified to edit articles. He's not a professional. I AM.

Screw up my Wiki bio all you want, folks. It will still look good on my resume. I just hope nobody actually READS my bio on Wiki.

I can't believe Wiki has a style (not formatting) guide because most of your article sound as tho they were composed by ESL folks or native speakers who don't grammar and/or are too lazy to proofread articles.

nonsenseferret edited my bio...and misspelled my name TWICE as Frank SanellA. I undid it twice. He undid it twice. Three "undos" in 24 hours is a no-no, correct.

When I pointed out to nonsense that he misspelled my name twice while arguing about unimportant things, he gotdefensive and said, "The problem's been taken care of. No more need to discuss it." Of course, don't discuss his mistakes...but inundate me with Talk page b*llsh*t about formatting, indents, external links, submissions forms for photos...

I'm certain that anorexic "rhymes with rich," Gorilla ill permanently ban me from editing Wiki articles, just as she banned me from the help room for being rude...while she was insuloting me the whole time!

Mlpearc, the self-described high school dropout and former ditch digger (?), plumber (?) whatever, will be happy to see me go after nominating me for "speedy deletion" after not bothering to read bondeas' challenge re: my notability in 2011 and ignored the update: KEEP.

Wiki says once you're declared "notable," you can't be reclassified as "unnotable." Mlpearc either didn't know that or chose to ignore the rule to insult me, a college/grad school educated writer, who IS notable, not according to Amazon or OpenLibrary, which lists my 19+ books and are quoted in other Wiki articles based on the subjects of my books, such as Wiki articles on the Knights Templars, the Opium Wars, Eddie Murphy, I think.

A simple search of Wiki for "Frank Sanello" would have displayed dozens of footnotes citing MY published books.

How many books have you amateur typists published, guys & gals?

I'm NOT going to do free editing of articles other than my own...altho Wiki desperately needs a style editor as every magazine and publishing house employs to ensure uniformity, consistency and correct usage/style.

Gorilla (perfect name by the way) even criticized me for putting whisper me on my own Talk page. So what? Typical of her authoritarian personality, like most of the wannabe, frustrated writers/volunteers.

I always contribute money to Wikipedia when Jimmy Wales ask and will continue to do so because Wiki is a great resource. But after dealing with all these petty, no talent tyrants/volunteers...

...I am outta here!

Sincerely...fed up with you neo-Nazi editors,

FrankSanello (talk)Frank Sanello

I've left a warning on your page regarding the personal attacks here—referring to other editors as "neo-Nazis" and similar is completely unacceptable. Regarding your image, I've tagged it for deletion because you've indicated that it was taken by your neighbor. Your neighbor has yet to send in sufficient permission, so if that doesn't happen in seven days, it will be removed so as not to violate copyright. 2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please read this[edit]

Right from the day I was blocked in June 2015, all administrators tell me one thing: "You attacked GorillaWarfare", "You harassed GorillaWarfare", "You created attack pages against GorillaWarfare".

You know everything (My intention was not to attack you, though a third person would think like that). You must tell other administrators the truth. It's true that I have created some block evading socks, but there are reasons. Though you can say that no reasons are enough to justify sockpuppetry.

  • I actually wanted to take the standard offer seriously. When I was blocked, in August 2015, I found that User:Mar4d has a sock account named User:Lyk4. I thought if I come back, then I will file an SPI against him.
  • At that time there was no guarantee that I will come back, as you know everybody was hating me for writing such things against GorillaWarfare. I wanted to stop Mar4d from becoming administrator, that's the reason, I created "The Avengers" account. Mar4d had 60,000 edits. If I directly accuse him of socking with my new account, then it will be a confirmed BOOMERANG on me. That's why I edited for two months before starting this ANI thread against Mar4d. At the beginning it was what I expected: Future Perfect At Sunrise initially supported Mar4d, but due to Wikimandia who took it to SPI it was exposed that Mar4d was a sock of Acejet.
  • I knew his friend TopGun will try to block me, that's why I didn't create any articles with this account. When TopGun filed that CosmicEmperor SPI, at the beginning I was trying to defend myself, but later on I emailed Mike V, and few administrators (including you) that I am CosmicEmperor. And I don't have any access to the CosmicEmperor account. I also promised Mike V that I will take the STANDARD OFFER this time, and request unblock after 6 months.

Community banned by a sock IP[edit]

Problems with fake accusations[edit]

  • Now I understand, why they did this? CosmicEmperor was indefinitely blocked, but Cosmic was not involved in any long term harassment or long term abuse. When this ban proposal was made in 2015, I didn't have large number of sock accounts. User:LoverBoyInGarden was not a sock account. That was my first account, whose password I forgot. The account made only four edits in 2014. The only way they can ban me was by linking me with an old banned User:Maheshkumaryadav. The IP also included the word "stalking". I was never stalking you.
  • When I asked some genuine questions, always I was rebuked by administrator SQL, who revoked my talk page access.

Unblock Request[edit]

Hello. As per request sent to arbcomm at the end of November 2015 & more recently to func, I was hoping to become unblocked on enwiki. Per advice of User:HJ Mitchell (as well as common sense), I will avoid both editing as it relates to Cooper Union as well as Beyond My Ken. My primary concerns in editing, as has been the case since 2006, are keeping wikipedia citations up to date, with correct grammar, and as few citation needed headlines as possible. Obviously, both Beyond My Ken and myself were frustrated with the edits of one another, and I was particularly steamed he was allowed to essentially en:WP:OWN both en:Cooper Union & en:Cooper Union financial crisis and tuition protests (1/3 of total edits on pages with very long histories), disagree vehemently with a dozen other good faith editors and was baffled to find so many of my edits suppressed all at once. With time, I have realized it is best to take time to sleep on conflicts, assume en:WP:GF and take my time to avoid disagreements whenever possible. Ferociouslettuce (talk) 22:37, 27 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Ferociouslettuce: When the Arbitration Committee declined to unblock you after your last appeal, we instructed that you could re-appeal six months from then. As that is not until June 30, 2016, we will not be hearing appeals before then. As a side note, please send future appeals to arbcom-l@lists.wikimedia.org instead of posting them to individual arbitrators' talk pages. GorillaWarfare (talk) 00:12, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
ok. my last email to FUNC received no official response. I will wait another 2 months. Ferociouslettuce (talk) 23:46, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'm seeing that Thryduulf responded on 21 March. GorillaWarfare (talk) 23:57, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I appreciated Thryduulf's response, but he was explicit in noting "opinions expressed in this email are solely [his] own and do not necessarily represent the views of any organisation or group with which I may be affiliated". Ferociouslettuce (talk) 00:16, 4 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferociouslettuce: The point remains that you may not re-appeal until June 30, 2016. Your emails were received, and Thryduulf did reply, but the functionaries list does not need to "officially" reply to every email that is prematurely appealing a block that has a very clear re-appeal date. I see that MichaelMaggs has noted on your talk page that you should stop using Commons to access English Wikipedians that you would not otherwise be able to contact, and I agree with him. Future discussion of this matter should be directed to arbcom-l@lists.wikimedia.org; as an attempt to discourage you from using Commons for this purpose (and likely getting blocked for it), this will be my final reply here. Thanks for uploading File:Coffee pour over using Hario cone 2.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Cross-platform communication[edit]

@GorillaWarfare: Sorry to bother you here, but my access to my talk page has been revoked, just because I followed Wikipedia Guidelines of Talk-Page edits, I would like to use my talk page again, as it is my only source of communication. You can look at the history section of the main English Wikipedia talk page and you will see a user patrolling and hounding me. In my defense I was removing "bad language" in order to prepare a future unblock request, surely a tidy and clean environment is better, thanks. References on wikipedia[edit]

Gorilla warfare, I have been trying to follow your demo on entering references. I have found it not very simple. Maybe this is because of my age, it is not because of my ability to understand references and their importance. I have written scientific articles and chapters in books. The methodologies that wiki uses should, I believe, be very simple and understandable by those who are far behind you in computer dexterity. Do you think wiki can consider this plea for simplicity? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dutchblueguard (talk • contribs) 11:51, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried using the VisualEditor? I created that tutorial a long time ago, before VisualEditor existed. These days I primarily add references using it instead of how I demonstrated in the video—it is considerably easier. GorillaWarfare (talk) 18:15, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Peter Eckersley at DebConf15.png.

Thank you.
