District names[edit]

When you move categories, you must move all subcategories too, and you must update Wikidata items too. Otherwise, the whole navigation system will be broken, which already happened to some Russian districts where we have strongly rely on Wikidata for sorting WLE images. --Alexander (talk) 04:39, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander - The categories for Russia are a mess. I adjusted many to the standard names as presented in the English Wikipedia. I don't think I must update all. Regarding updates in Wikidata - after a move, in case a WD item was attached, it always said something like "the WD item will be updated soon". FreightXPress (talk) 05:24, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's true what Alexander told you. You created only empty categories. Stop it ! And then: the English Wikipedia cannot be the standard for all other Wikipedias. In Commons there are no general rules on the use of parentheses, or commas: the standard (coherence) must be inside of the same country, between all categories of the same nation. Finally, if you want to make so broad and radical changes, it needs a discussion about it. Thank you. --DenghiùComm (talk) 07:56, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
DenghiùComm - "You created only empty categories." - This is a lie. E.g. Category:Lagunillas Municipality, Zulia. Stop it! With regard to Russia my "radical changes" where to adjust categories to the standard given by Category Russia for protected areas. E.g. in Category:Istrinsky District there was "XYZ, Istra district" "XYZ (Istrinsky District)" and "XYZ (Istra district)". I chose the English Wikipedia name which was also given by the protected areas tree, namely "Istrinsky District". Regarding "And then: the English Wikipedia cannot be the standard for all other Wikipedias." - I did change in Commons, not in other Wikipedias. And Commons uses English. Regarding "In Commons there are no general rules on the use of parentheses, or commas: the standard (coherence) must be inside of the same country, between all categories of the same nation." - I saw many examples where this was not true. But I didn't standardize that. Maybe before attacking another user next time, you look better what the user has done and how things work. FreightXPress (talk) 08:09, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

FreightXPress, your edits are not meaningful. There are no other entities named Cova Lima or Manufahi. It is useless to name the categories Cova Lima district or Manufahi district. Anyhow, you didn't updated all Wikidata and the links inside Wikipedia articles. Before starting such big changes, you should discuss your ideas on the discussion pages. --JPF (talk) 09:04, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Commons categories are stored as P373 property of Wikidata. It is not updated automatically. Unfortunately, now we don't even know which Wikidata items need update, so your edits are really ruining the whole system, including the categorization of WLE photos in Russia and perhaps in other countries as well.

Ymblanter, Rubin16 and other admins, would it be possible to revert all edits in question automatically? We planned to make categories for Russian districts coherent with their names in English Wikipedia, but this should be done carefully. Wikidata items and subcategories here should be updated too. --Alexander (talk) 10:29, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Same request for East Timor districts. It is all going into a big mess. --JPF (talk) 11:07, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
By the way: You are doing exact the same things, User:Tamawashi did in June 2014. It made just the same problems. --JPF (talk) 11:15, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Which is not surprising since both are socks of Tobias Conradi.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:11, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Changes made on Italian district names have already been rollbacked. --DenghiùComm (talk) 11:19, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alexander - can you say which edits for Russian entities where problematic? I standardized towards the names in English Wikipedia, so bots can find the connections, even for those commons categories that do not yet exist in WD. I also updated Ukrainian and Belarusian districts. Several of the Russians had "rayon".
  • JPF - it was "Category:Cova Lima (District)" - this is never done that way. Either use "Category:Cova Lima (district)", or "Category:Cova Lima District". I did not add the "District" there.
  • DenghiùComm - which ones where problematic?

FreightXPress (talk) 11:40, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

All edits of Russian districts were problematic because P373 in Wikidata was not updated. --Alexander (talk) 11:56, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Alexander That makes only sense for those that have a P373. So it is only a subset.
Furthermore if P373 has not been updated yet the message ("will be updated soon") was false, or "soon" takes a little bit more time. Bots can follow the redirects. What is the problem to wait 24h or so? FreightXPress (talk) 12:04, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If this sock does not stop immediately, I am going to indef block him. They already caused too much disruption on other projects. Concerning revert, from whet I know, it is only going to be one by one, I do not know any other way.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:06, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ymblanter - reverting the conversions from "Lenin rayon" to "Leninsky District" would not be very helpful. FreightXPress (talk) 12:13, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You have already been given the explanations why it would be helpful, twice.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:14, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
A bot IS already working on some of the items. So, a revert to "Lenin rayon" is helpful in what sense? FreightXPress (talk) 12:17, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ymblanter I am not a sock. I edit from a computer that also other people have access too. The CheckUser is a mess. FreightXPress (talk) 12:17, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Now blocked. We do not need it here all over again, like in Wikipedia and Wikidata.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:19, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Every category you moved belonged to P373 of one or another Wikidata item. It will never be updated unless you do it, manually or by bot. --Alexander (talk) 12:19, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Alexander - A bot is working: Special:Contributions/Hoo Bot. 2015x05x19 (talk) 12:28, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I blocked them indef for the time being and open the topic on the Administrator Noticeboard how to revert the damage. Let us see whether there are any good ideas are going to be suggested there.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:28, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

To prevent harm:

  • Lenin rayon and alike where changed to Leninsky District for Russian entities. This is standard. Some categories for X District had subcategories that were named "Buildings of X District" and "Lakes in X rayon". They have been standardized to the English Wikipedia language name.
  • Sometimes two categories for the same thing existed next to each other, "X district" next to "X District"
  • The complaints users brought to FreightXPress's user talk have all been addressed. It was all in discussion. But Ymblanter came with a hammer.
  • A bot is working on P373 : Special:Contributions/Hoo Bot.

Mass reversion will benefit no one. The edits for the Russian, Ukrainian, Belorusian districts where in line with the naming conventions in the English Wikipedia, which is applied for these entities here too. Other edits where also done to bring Commons closer to English Wikipedia - exactly to allow better linking between Commons, Wikidata, English Wikipedia and other projects.

Some edits were problematic: Districts of Barcelona and some in Italy. THIS WAS A MISTAKE. The Italian entities have been reverted, for the ones from Barcelona a discussion was underway at Category talk:Districts of Barcelona. 80.134.83.13 12:47, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Districts of Barcelona[edit]

copy to Category talk:Districts of Barcelona. FreightXPress (talk) 12:05, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Districts of Slovenia[edit]

User:Ymblanter - you don't like me, and I don't like you. But maybe there is a way to work together for the benefit of Wikimedia Projects?

An example: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14481713

  • English label: Šmarna Gora District
  • English label of "topic's main category": Category:Šmarna Gora District
  • en WP link: Šmarna Gora District
  • And I changed the commons category to: Category:Šmarna Gora District - a bot then changed the commons link in Wikidata

Now it is all matching. Please don't revert this via mass reversion. FreightXPress (talk) 17:00, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Block[edit]

Unblock request declined

This blocked user asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without discussion.

Request reason: "please unblock for 48 h so I can at least take part in discussions regarding the renaming. I already clarified some points. I will not move any pages. I spent a lot of time in fixing inconsistencies. There things categories for the same thing residing directly next to each other in the same parent category, like "ABC district" next to "ABC District". I then merged. Ymblanter suggest mass reversion. But the edits itself that I made were in line with English Wikipedia naming conventions for Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian districts. I didn't apply them fully, since the Belarusian entities use different Romanization system, but at least the suffix " District" and similar I could apply. For the Russian entities I often copied the names directly, i.e. they now match 100% with English Wikipedia and with the label in Wikidata. This all was meant to improve matching between WD, Commons and Wikidata. I was accused of not updating WD - but when I moved categories that were in WD it always said something like "the corresponding WD item will be updated soon". Also many categories did not have a WD entry. So reverting these is not improving Commons, nor Wikidata.
  • Ymblanter wrote: "If this sock does not stop immediately, I am going to indef block him." - I had stopped already, only fixed something I had done before with Barcelona districts.
  • I repeat - I will not move any pages
  • Also, please take into account, that the accounts I am accused to be a sock of, are not blocked in Commons. So there was no circumvention of a block and there was no circumvention of a sanction.
  • When I was indef blocked I was just discussing, I didn't move any pages against the will of those that raised complaints on my talk.
  • Repeat: I will not move any pages."
Decline reason: "Until the mess you created isn't fixed there's no need and no time for discussion. That's according to the users involved in the cleanup. Further: The block was valid and stands. I see no valid reason to unblock you. Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 20:55, 20 May 2015 (UTC)"[reply]

Request reason: ""Until the mess you created isn't fixed there's no need and no time for discussion. That's according to the users involved in the cleanup." - It is only a claim by Ymblanter and JPF that large scale mess had been created. See above, e.g. the section about "Districts of Slovenia". Most of the edits matched the name of geographical entities between different Wikimedia Projects: Wikidta English label = Wikidata English label for topic's main category = English Wikipedia article name = English Wikipedia category name. This is true for the naming conventions for Category:Municipalities_in_Latvia, Category:Municipalities_in_Lithuania, Category:Municipalities_in_Mexico, Category:Administrative_okrugs_of_Moscow, Category:Municipal_districts_of_Volgograd_Oblast, Category:Districts_of_Georgia (some projects call them municipalities), Category:Municipalities_in_Venezuela, Category:Districts_of_Belarus, Category:Districts_of_Nepal, Category:Districts_of_Bhutan, Category:Districts_of_Pakistan and several more. It WAS true for Category:Districts_of_East_Timor, now damage has been created by reverting this set. User:J. Patrick Fischer and User:Ymblanter here created damage by reverting to Fischer's private style, namely "X (District)" - which is used nowhere else, not Wikidata, not English Wikipedia. I will inform members of international toponymy work groups about these reversions and proposed reversions, which document edits against otherwise established naming conventions within Wikimedia, edits only driven by hostility (Ymblanter) and egoism (J. Patrick Fischer). FreightXPress (talk) 13:01, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You made a mess by redirecting the categories. Commons-Links from articles didn't work anymore, interwikis were not actualized, and you used a name for the Timorese districts, which is not existing. There is no "x district", just "district x" (Tetun) or "district of x" (Port.) or simply "x". Using "x (District)" is the best way using the correct name and making a difference to sities or subdistricts if needed. Using enWp as model is improperly, because the articles about administrative divisions there are incomplete and imprecise. deWP and tetWP are having complete articles and same system, not using phantasy names and not using needless addings to geographical names. ptWP and idWP are using the same system and several more. deWP has the most articles about East Timor with >1400 in the moment and was award as Community project of 2013 in deWP. I wonder why we have to discuss this, while there is no Category:Alabama state and there is a Category:Washington (state). Maybe just an idea, it is possible to press his own phantasy opinion in little state themes? I am happy, you are blocked, especially after you are showing your character by making personal attack ("egoism") and causing the same trouble for the second time with another sock puppet, including making the same link mess like last year. That is all I have to say and there is no need to say anything more. --JPF (talk) 16:02, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sefton and Knowsley Borough pages[edit]

Regarding your change of page name. How dare you change the page name please reverse this immediately. The pages are so called "Metropolitan Borough of ...." as that is what they are called! Kindly please return these pages to which they were.Babydoll0409 (talk) 20:09, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This user is indefblocked. Pls feel free to revert this yourself.--Ymblanter (talk) 20:50, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I realised that. I could not revert the page transfer but i have moved them bit by bit. This is sheer vandalism. Babydoll0409 (talk) 21:15, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can easily revert them with cat-a-lot if you explain me what exactly needs to be reverted.--Ymblanter (talk) 21:30, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Category discussion warning

Category:Subnational_flags_of_Myanmar has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
