Category:Lock 07 (C&O Canal)

Hi. Given that it's not technically in Cabin John, what shall we identify as its location? (All of locks should have a location.) I guess we could just place a bunch of them in Montgomery County, Frederick County, etc. Cheers, Moreau1 (talk) 04:17, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Lock 07 had been placed in Glen Echo, who's town limits end along the eastbound lanes of the Clara Barton Parkway (and thus don't include the C&O Canal beyond). The surrounding area north, east and south of Glen Echo is included as part of the Brookmont CDP per the US Census Bureau, so that's probably the best place for it. That said, it would also likely be helpful, as you suggest, to group them all by county. Famartin (talk) 14:02, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

County and city-specific road sign gantry categories

A while back, Mjrmtg decided it would be a good idea to subdivided the Category:Road sign gantries in Florida, Category:Road sign gantries in Georgia (U.S. state), and others by the counties they're located in. I think Category:Road sign gantries in Maryland, Category:Road sign gantries in Virginia, and Category:Road sign gantries in New Jersey deserve the same sorting, although for now, I'll hold off on New Jersey, since so many that should be in that category are still in Category:Road signs in New Jersey. ----DanTD (talk) 03:10, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

in order to avoid sterile edit wars let me open this discussion about your file "2020-05-06 13 23 52 A sample of Chef Boyardee Lasagna in the Franklin Farm section of Oak Hill, Fairfax County, Virginia.jpg".

The image depicts some sort of canned food, which - according to what you maintain - depicts lasagne. Now, even assuming that lasagne can be canned (which, as an Italian, I already find borderline absurd), if you just read what a lasagna is - for instance on the respective wikipedia page - you will see that a lasagna is a type of Italian layered pasta dish, consisting of flat sheets of pasta filled with some ingredients (depending on the type of lasagna, most typically ragù, bechamel or mozzarella, and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese). The image you propose to include in the category "lasagna" has little to nothing to do with a lasagna since: 1. it consists of some undulated pasta shape. 2. it is not layered but rather all mixed. 3. it is soaked in some liquid sauce. Regardless of what the label may say, this does not make it a lasagna, as it does not fulfil any criteria to represent meaningfully the concept of lasagna. I therefore suggest removing it from that category, and perhaps look together for a more suitable one that would not misguide users looking for an image of a lasagna. The image is clearly labelled "Chef Boyardee Lasagna". I think most people understand what that is. Canned lasagna, as with all canned dishes, rarely quite resemble the so-called "real" dish. So, unless you want to create a subcategory of "canned lasagna" or "chef boyardee lasagna" within the "lasagna" category, I suggest you leave it be. Famartin (talk) 21:56, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Hello Famartin, for the future it would be useful to ping the user you are replying to, if done in your discussion page, since he/she is not notified about your reply. On the matter of the lable, the question is to which extent a label on a product, especially when produced elsewhere than where the product is originally from, it should be taken "face value". I, for instance, could produce a can with Chinese noodles in it and call it spaghetti on the label. This however does not make it spaghetti. So the way I see it the simple fact that a label says something, does not prescind from assessing the actual content of the product, especially considering that the picture shows the content, not the label or the can. Krummholz

Hi Famartin - this can be at any altitude (even sea level, where salt winds stunt trees), but they must be severely stunted; the alternative name 'knieholz', means "knee-high". Yours wasn't the only one I removed from the category, some others too that didn't fit the category. Any trees stunted to under a metre could be considered krummholz, but not a ~15 metre tree, even if its shape is less than perfectly straight. I checked with a professional forest ecologist, and he agreed that your Pinus strobus is not Krummholz, and neither are some of your Pinus albicaulis photos. He cited for example Thomas & Packham, Ecology of Woodlands and Forests (2007, Cambridge University Press; see p. 119, "The trees ... are very contorted, often forming multi-stemmed cushions, and so low in stature that in winter they are covered and protected by snow"). They do not even meet the definition on the en:wiki page; "a type of stunted, deformed vegetation encountered in the subarctic and subalpine tree line landscapes, shaped by continual exposure to fierce, freezing winds. Under these conditions, trees can only survive where they are sheltered by rock formations or snow cover". For a better example of true Krummholz, see e.g. File:2015.07.11 12.41.01 DSCN2674 - Flickr - andrey zharkikh.jpg, and for a coastal saltburn-created example, File:Floras Lake, New River ACEC (15704264952).jpg. Your Abies balsamea photos are also very good examples. I will move them from Category:Krummholz to Category:Wind-affected tree growth, where they are better placed. An unusual question to ask

Hey there! I'm writing this to you from viewing the photos that you have uploaded into some of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey state highways.

I've been taking road sign photos for quite a while, however, there's a lot of highways over here that are in a difficult area to access (mainly because of parking issues). I just want to ask you, do you have any sort of tips or tricks or any sort of advice for taking better photos, or just from the issues regarding parking or just in areas that are difficult to access? If you do, it would be nice to hear them.
