Sanborn maps[edit]

Hi Eureka, I just found these maps having no visible category during a search for some other maps.. Now it seems to me as if much of Category:Media contributed by Kent State University is not sorted into any correct Category yet. Are you interested in the topic, and would assign the categories? I think it would be the quickest option to pour the entire Kent-SU-category into Category:Sanborn maps of Ohio and then sort everything into the proper subcategories again. --Enyavar (talk) 16:52, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Thanks for tackling this issue. I don't know if I have time for a major project like this, but I'll pitch in when I can. I think your approach is a good place to start. When organizing the maps into the categories for individual cities, please be aware that there are sometimes multiple sets of maps per community, each published in a different year. See the Cincinnati category for an example. - Eureka Lott 17:05, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the heads-up, that bit seems important. I don't think it's too major a project, but it might really take a few valuable hours. --Enyavar (talk) 17:57, 2 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I admit that it took me the better part of a day, but I moved all Sanborn plans I found in the Kent category, into the fitting subcategories of Category:Sanborn maps of Ohio, so that they are all ordered by placenames within their counties. With some major cities, I kept and expanded the category system to differentiate between different publishing years, but right now I have seen enough of these files. Cheers! --Enyavar (talk) 22:20, 3 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for getting all of those files categorized! The new county-level categories are an improvement, too. Thanks again! - Eureka Lott 14:27, 5 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Old maps categories[edit]

I don't think recreating Category:Old maps of cities in Massachusetts is a good idea. "Old" and "historical" are vague and subjective terms, which isn't useful for an archive that strives for accuracy. The consensus at Commons:Categories for discussion/2019/09/Category:Historical images was clearly in favor of depreciating "historical" in category names, and I've begun doing so with "old" as well. If there is a need to sort city maps in Massachusetts by date (and right now there's isn't, since only Boston is sorted that way), Category:Maps of cities in Massachusetts by century would be a more appropriate category tree. Hi there. Thanks for the note. I'm not the biggest fan of the old maps categories, either—but since Category:Old maps of Boston was recreated, it needed to go somewhere. Also, Massachusetts was the only U.S. state that lacked an old maps category. Since Category:Old maps of cities in the United States by state is fully populated, it doesn't make much sense to omit a single state. - Eureka Lott 17:00, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, makes sense. Given the rather forceful reply I got here it's probably not worth my time to push the issue. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 15:32, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unsure[edit]

Taking a look at File:FORTH WORTH OPERA FC HORIZONTAL@3x-100.jpg, I see Italian Wiki uses the file whilst en:Fort Worth Opera doesn't have it. The file comes from an account made with the company's name, and they've also uploaded File:FORTH WORTH OPERA FC HORIZONTAL@3x.png. They have made four edits only and reaching out to them seems a difficult task (for permissions verification). ─ The Aafī (talk) 22:05, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Yeah, I agree that it may be difficult to communicate with the uploader, given their limited contributions. They may or may not be affiliated with the opera company. Even if they are associated with company, they may not have realized the implications of uploading the logos here. I think they exceed the COM:TOO, though, and the COM:PCP suggests that deletion would probably be the safest option. - Eureka Lott 06:31, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your Revert[edit]

Forgive me, I didn’t necessarily change any of what you said, i instead was trying to do you a favor to keep it aesthetically pleasing. Elvisisalive95 (talk) 20:14, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Questions about postcards[edit]

Hello. I just uploaded screenshots of two old Chrome era postcards of steam locomotives just to add them as photos to Wikipedia pages ([1] [2] [3] [4]), but I wasn't sure what their copyright status actually was. Judging by the divided back of these, would you say these check out for use on Wikimedia, or should they be deleted? Someone who likes train writing (talk) 15:37, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you're confident that they were published in 1977 or earlier, they'd be in the public domain under {{PD-US-no notice}}. If they were published after that, things start to get a little stickier. Please see COM:HIRTLE for more information. - Eureka Lott 15:48, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am certain they were published before and during that year. Thank you. Someone who likes train writing (talk) 18:33, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
