Buses in Greece by city

Hi. I see that the "European countries" template that you use is not in correct alphabetical order, adding Turkey and Ukraine after the United Kingdom. Can you repair it? Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 20:08, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi! I'm sorry, but I cannot repair this template. --Elkost (talk) 20:17, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Category:Houses of culture

Hello. I had considered making the same edit as you, except that the master category Category:Houses of culture states that it is a category for such houses "mainly in socialist (or formerly socialist) countries," which Canada (and Quebec) are not. Perhaps that category description should be changed? Shawn in Montreal (talk) 13:35, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Yes, somebody should correct it, it's easy to remove this restriction. --Elkost (talk) 13:40, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
✓ Done! --Elkost (talk) 13:51, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Category:Documents

Please be carefull, a written or printed document never can be a memorial in a church. Is is a vital record, and should be placed as documents. Category:Funerary monuments is used for the physical body related-objects of art, the others are the 2-D documetns or correspondance abouth the deceased, nothing physical to do with the body or the ritual of the funeral. KR.--Carolus (talk) 07:33, 3 July 2019 (UTC)

Really, „Category:Funerary monuments“ is only for monuments, not for monuments and memorials, as usual. It's correct to differentiate. --Elkost (talk) 09:18, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
Additionally, I removed „Category:Hatchments“ from „Category:Obituaries“ as they are not documents, too. --Elkost (talk) 10:05, 3 July 2019 (UTC)

Careful with Categories in Welsh images

Please take care when deleting categories on images relevant to Wales. FYA: Wales is both part of the United Kingdom and is also a country in its own right, as acknowledged on the English Wikipedia here. To quote:

The issue of whether Wales is a country or not has been repeatedly raised. The result of all these debates is that Wales is indeed a country. This has been confirmed in formal mediation. Many thanks, Llywelyn2000 (talk) 14:14, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

Dear colleague, the English language is rich in words like „country“ with many meanings; their use could be ambiguous, even misleading. Here (in Commons, En.wikipedia, etc.) we need to categorize by unambiguous, explicit criteria. Use of any ambiguous criterion could lead to a discussion like this.
In political geography continents are divided into sovereign states and dependent territories – Wales is neither the first, nor the latter, but a „constituent country of the UK“.
The community has chosen country to be the categorization criterion, meaning sovereign state / dependent territory“ (SS/DT). If in categories „by country“ we include the 4 constituent countries of the UK, then local patriots of plenty of 1-level subnational units would pretend for the same – not only large (populous like Uttar Pradesh, California, Texas, Bavaria, Catalonia, etc. +/ vast like Grenland, Siberia, Tibet), but middle-sized and small SS/DT as well: this is obviously unacceptable.
So it's a matter of continental subdivision level, nothing more – nobody intends to downgrade your lovely Wales. Best regards! --Elkost (talk) 07:12, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I see that your remarks are not intentionally political, and that you're looking for a 'one size fits all' kind of criterion.
You say:
The community has chosen „country“ to be the categorization criterion, meaning „sovereign state / dependent territory“ (SS/DT).
I would very much like to read the RFC where this was agreed. I would be grateful for a link to this discussion.
From the reader's aspect, they would look at Wales as a "country", end of; this would neither be 'ambiguous' or 'misleading'! On the other hand, a criterion set by the UN's definition of "sovereign state / dependent territory" (SS/DT) is both ambiguous and political. As I say, the English and other Wikipedias rely on citations/sources, not the UN.
Until you can show me a link to the discussion where „country“ = „sovereign state / dependent territory“ (SS/DT) then please do not revert my edits.
If that discussion has taken place, then it needs to be re-discussed, and I'll open a new RFC.
My main reasoning would be this: all Wikimedia projects have one common core value, which is getting more and more important every day as a method of ending Fake News, and that is what do the citations/sources say? Sources should trump everything else, and certainly should be the deciding factor in what constitutes a "country". As you can see on the English Wikipedia, all the sources define Wales as a country; for Commons to define otherwise would be wrong, and we would be condoning the use of Fake News on Wikimedia Projects!
Lastly, you mention other places (Uttar Pradesh, California, Texas, Bavaria, Catalonia, etc.) which are very different to each other; each one is unique, each one would have different citations/sources to Wales, and I'm certainly not looking at any other place, state or country; indeed I have no idea what their citations/sources say! What I do know is that (and I repeat) all citations/sources show that Wales is a country. Commons categories need to reflect that. If your 'one size fits all' denigrates one country (in this case Wales), then it needs to be changed. Looking at each place/country individually is the only way forward, and would strengthen our core belief that citations/sources trump politics. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 14:36, 23 August 2019 (UTC)

Bricks and chimneys

Hi! I've seen the categories you have opened for brick chimneys. I'd recommend you to check Category:Chimneys in the Land of Valencia where most chimneys are made with bricks (my own greatgrandfather used to build them!). Thanks for your interest. B25es (talk) 06:47, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

Hi, B25es! It's great that greatgrandfather is so famous! I prefer not to distinguish whether a chimney is made of bricks or not. If images are in “brick chimneys” categories, then I could categorize them by country. --Elkost (talk) 06:56, 19 October 2019 (UTC)
He's not famous! Building chimneys was a blooming business here in València from the 1890s to the 1940s. I don't sort chimneys by material either, basically because I assume any chimney is made of bricks (what's not always the case). All pre-1940 chimneys in the Valencian Community are entitled to listed building protection of some kind. We are proactive in taking pictures of listed stuff in the Land of Valencia, so you'll find a desproportionate number of categories (and individual pictures) of chimneys from our place. Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Patroller!

Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi Elkost,

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons.
