Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

File:Jim_Harbaugh.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:55, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Paul Tangi Mhova Mkondo Signature.png. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk.
The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that this file was not a derivative work of a non-free work, you may request undeletion.

File tagging File:Enos Nkala.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Enos Nkala.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Enos Nkala.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open!
[edit]![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d4/POTY_barnstar.svg/140px-POTY_barnstar.svg.png)
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Ekhaya2000,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:44, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello Ekhaya2000.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |

[edit]Yann (talk) 13:39, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
Oppose as the "troll" who nominated 33 out of 41 confirmed and likely copyright violations for deletion. The files you used were not your own creation. File:Johann van der Westhuizen 2.jpg was a low-resolution crop of http://www.baudoin-lebon.com/cspdocs/artwork/images/christianCourreges_BL42027.jpg, grabbed from http://www.baudoin-lebon.com/fr/artistes/oeuvres/552/christian-courreges. It is Christian Courrèges' creation, not yours. File:Major General Sibusiso Moyo.jpg was https://i.ytimg.com/vi/U8peYlyOMAA/maxresdefault.jpg from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8peYlyOMAA. It is the creation of the African Union.
- Wikimedia Commons (the site you're on) is here for us people who want to help create a repository of legitimately free, educational media. By uploading copyright violations (and continuing to lie about it), you are not helping.
- As you can see, you have access to your talk page. I am watching this page, so if you comment on the deletion discussion here, I will copy it to the deletion discussion as soon as I see it. If you choose to comment, the comment should address why something that is supposedly your own work is so small and has no metadata, and why we should believe your authorship claims for this particular photo when so many of your other claims have been demonstrably false. —LX (talk, contribs) 18:18, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
Yes, l can honestly confirm that the files deleted, l honestly thought out of goodwill and my own time l thought it was acceptable to get some photos online and when you cropped l believed that it was okay. That was naively done which l apologise for. But what l don’t like is when one judges and uses the logic that just because other photos were put wrongfully it means the next photo too. That is wrong especially from one’s persons opinion “Troll”. Being honest to you when you talk of metadata and low resolution. I don’t understand what you mean? Then help me to make it comply to meet the standards. Than instead of having people who delete act like the Wild West whereby they are given a sheriff badge and carry out their own justice and decide to shoot down anyone they are not happy with. I try to concentrate on certain wikicommon themes which l feel that they need input. But this attitude is putting me down and making me lose the energy to help with editing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ekhaya2000 (talk • contribs) 12:12, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
