George Boxley Cabin

NR = National Register. Because it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it qualifies for an en:wp article. Removing the link is distinctly unhelpful, as it would mean that when we get around to writing an article on it, we'd either be forced to remember that this image (unlike many thousands of other photos of NR-listed properties) has no link to the article, or we'd forget and not provide readers with a link. Speedy deletions

Hi. I see you've unilaterally speedy deleted some photos of the "Nude_portrayals_of_computer_technology" series. Given the "kept" result of Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_in_Category:Nude_portrayals_of_computer_technology, I think they'd warrant a deletion listing rather than unilateral speedy. I speedied them because, frankly, they're porn. It's rediculous that they are on this site. Now, I will admit that I didn't see the deletion request when I started purging the files, so I'm not going to initiate some deletion war on them (that's on me for not seeing that they had talk pages, after all), but seriously... what the ever-loving hell. Commons is a fucking joke, and those images are part of the problem. Can anyone, for the love of God/gods/the void explain to me why File:Pin.jpg deserves to be at the top of wikt:id:pin? (which it very much was before I deleted it) What in the hell is "educational" about those images? (that's the project scope, after all) Why does Commons have no problem with porn? (EC) OK, a few things to get sorted.

1. Out of scope is not a cause for speedy deletion for images. For articles sure, but never for images. Scope is very subjective and so should be put to a deletion request.
2. It is not our concern why other projects use or do not use specific images. We do not editorialise other projects.
3. As an admin it is your job to look out for files which have been DRed before - a simple check is to see if it has a talk page. If it doesn't, it won't have been DRed before.
4. Porn is within our scope to a limited degree.
5. However, these images are within our scope, quite clearly so. They illustrate HTML (which is within scope) and body art (ditto). That they are not "serious" nor "encyclopaedic" is not at all the issue - our remit is not to collect encyclopaedic images, it is to collect educational images, and educational is a much wider category. For instance, this photo of mine is not something I would expect to see on wikipedia. But it is in fact used in a children's guidebook. It is therefore educational. These images are not encyclopaedic, but they are educational - they are not "serious", but they can be used to illustrate HTML in a way people will not easily forget.

Matt, I was intending to ask you about this anyway. You wrote recently that photographs of a woman with a vegetable in an orifice were "educational". It's starting to feels as though this word is so all-encompassing as used on Commons that it no longer means anything. Can you explain where the boundaries lie, i.e. what do photographs of vegetables stuck up certain places teach anyone? I have a rather wide-ranging view of educational. In a way it's a mirror of COM:PRP. That states that if we are in doubt about the copyright of an image, we should delete as it. Regarding scope, I think that if it might possibly be within scope then we should keep it. It's better to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it, as the saying goes. Absent any other reason for deletion anyway. But that is not to say I believe everything is educational. I have nominated a quite significant number of images for deletion as being out of scope - personal pictures from parties, etc. While yes, parties are within scope, I don't see any educational value in say two of the attendees gurning for the camera with no context. Similarly for stuff which gets stuck in Category:Men - mostly it's just random people who are not notable, nor doing anything especially interesting.

Regarding sexuality, then it gets a bit trickier, though I should point out again that I do frequently DR low quality penis images. The cucumber thing was on the grounds that if people are unable to afford a proper dildo, or are for other reasons unable to keep a sex toy, they are likely to improvise, and cucumbers are such a commonplace object that might be substituted. Consider Category:Sexual penetrative use of objects - the cucumber images are 6 of only 10 images of improvised dildos (of the others, 3 are bananas (from the same series, so unsure why they aren't DRed) and the other a space hopper). This isn't an issue like penises, where we have 1000 images: we have 10, and that DR will reduce that number by 60% (90% if the banana images logically follow the cucumbers to the bin). Also these images are very good quality - they're not just "snapshot" images - and actually add something new to our collection. That makes them within scope, and it makes losing something we should not be doing lightly. -mattbuck (Talk) 14:13, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Some of the out-and-out porn images on Commons are exceedingly obnoxious, but their number is not large in relation to the total number of files on Commons. The files in "Category:Nude portrayals of computer technology" are not out-and-out porn, and are only moderately obnoxious in and of themselves (though they could acquire additional annoyance value in certain contexts). I ask if he deleted, in an out of process, several more files that arent in anyone watchpage. I´am pretty angry because of this abuse, but dispite this, i only shoutted, virtually, not told to fuck off (word used in the same porn this administrator doens likes, what a irony). It's hilarious that Tm tells EVula to grow up and be a man. Because uploading fap galleries to Commons is normal behavior for a mature adult. These images are "in scope" only because Commoners have twisted the supposed educational aims of the project all out of true; that anyone can think these could be "realistically used for educational purposes" is beyond me. What kind of HTML classes have you taken, that you think an instructor would illustrate course material with photos of naked women sporting "COPY" "PASTE" over the breasts of two women?

Of course, these are hardly the worst culprits when it comes to fap galleries on Commons. At least most of these are clearly models consenting to participation in artistic photography, although there is no evidence they consented to distribution in this manner. Plenty of other galleries exist where you couldn't even argue minimal artistic value - they have no purpose other than titillation. (See here and here or many of the hundreds, if not thousands, of photographs that mattbuck keeps categorized in his userspace - such as this one). Nathan^T 23:01, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Those galleries are generated by bots from the day's uploads so that problematic images can be identified (you know, like you want done - well I don't have time to watch new uploads 24/7, so I make a bot do it for me). Whether the images in question are good or bad, EVula unfortunately tried to get rid of them in an inappropriate way, and then also handled the aftermath of the reaction to his actions rather poorly as well. I'm a strong supporter of {{Nopenis}}, but this is simply not the same, and pretending that it's exactly the same accomplishes little other than annoying other people, and shifting the focus from the images themselves to EVula's behavior... That being said, I do get what you're saying, so don't take my comment as a dismissal of your request. Trust me, I've learned my lesson and plan to just stick with my occasional speeding of copyvios (even if, perplexingly, that isn't good enough for some people).
