Hi Drbogdan. Commons:Licensing states "Media licensed under non-commercial only licenses are not accepted as well." and the source website offers only a non-commercial license. In case you have uploaded other images under an insufficient license, please mark them for deletion, too. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the ? Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 00:19, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Categories and extraneous material[edit]

Hi Doc, thanks for your contributions here and on en.wiki, they are appreciated. I wanted to ask for your help on a small issue regarding the categories you're adding to the images you upload here. Using File:PIA16915-MarsCuriosityRover-Humidity-GaleCrater.jpg as an example, you added a variety of fairly horizontal categories...for example, Category:Curiosity rover, Category:Mars rovers, and Category:Mars exploration. These are all in the same category tree, and only the most specific category should be used (in this case, "Curiosity rover"). Same with Category:Gale Crater, Category:Aeolis Mons, and Category:Aeolis Palus...the most specific and appropriate is "Aeolis Palus", since it is a subcategory of "Gale Crater", and since Curiosity has not yet reached the extremities of Aeolis Mons. See the changes I made here, such as the categories I removed and the two I added. Note that I've also significantly cut down the description text...there's really no need to copy/paste the whole catalogue page, just the targeted descriptive text. Keeps it simple. :) If there's any questions about categorisation or anything else, please feel free to leave me a note. Cheers! Huntster (t @ c) 05:00, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Huntster - Thank you *very much* for the clarifications - they're *very much* appreciated - makes sense - seems simpler - and seems better - and should make things easier going forth of course - might have to do some updating first opportunity - in any case - Thanks again - and - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 15:44, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please note the date error for Lunokhod 1 which landed on the moon first in 1970.

Thank you *very much* for the correction - and related comment on the image description page - yes, seems the Lunokhod 1 landed in 1970 - and not 1973 as noted in the graph - Thanks again - and - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk)

Picture categories[edit]

Hello, Doc. Thank you for uploading Martian pictures. You have added a number of Curiosity rover traverse images and I have created a special category for these at Category:Curiosity rover traverse maps because there are so many of them (36, as I write). This new category is available if you upload any new maps.

When I was recategorising these from Category:Curiosity rover to Category:Curiosity rover traverse maps‎, I noticed you had overcategorised many pictures. For example, images you categorised as Category:Aeolis Mons or Category:Aeolis Palus were also unnecessarily categorised in Category:Gale Crater. The former two categories are contained within the latter, therefore, I have removed the Gale Crater category from most of those images.

Similarly, you categorised many images in Category:Curiosity rover also in Category:Mars exploration and in Category:Mars rovers, but those latter two categories were also unnecessary because the Curiosity rover is a subset of them, therefore, I also removed those categories from many images.

The correct use of the categories hierarchy is explained at Commons:Categories. O'Dea (talk) 23:17, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@O'Dea - Thank you for your comments - they are *greatly* appreciated - no problem whatsoever re adjusting/removing categories associated with images - yes, I'll try to more aware of image categories in future uploads - Thanks again for your comments - and - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 09:38, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rover driving distances[edit]

Hey there Doc, saw you updated File:Driving Distances on Mars and the Moon.png. I feel bad that you made all those manual fixes when NASA released a new version which fixes Lunokhod and adds Yutu (plus other data). I've uploaded under the same filename, but if you feel it would be better under a different name to preserve the previous data, please let me know. Huntster (t @ c) 04:50, 30 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

While I would normally agree given that credit formatting, the overriding question is how NASA would have the right to release another agency's material to the public domain. There's just no evidence they had such permission, and JPL (unfortunately) releases these kinds of compilations using outside agency material quite often. Doc, please please please stop uploading composite images if you aren't 100% sure that *all* elements are freely licensed or public domain. Don't hesitate to ask me if you have questions about a desired image's status, I'm here to help. Huntster (t @ c) 16:20, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Huntster: - Thank you for your comments - yes - agreed - in this instance - NASA seemed first in the line of credits - and therefore, possibly, ok - will try to be more aware of composite image credits in the future of course - Thanks again for your comments - and - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 18:12, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the credit line is actually "X-ray: NASA/CXC/Univ of Hamburg/F. de Gasperin et al; Optical: SDSS; Radio: NRAO/VLA", and NASA only leads the Chandra portion. Notice the different types of layers are separated by semicolons, and are specifically denoted as Xray, optical, radio. This means they are separate sources. Just something to look out for. Hey Doc. I really think the border needs to be removed and contrast sharpened, and overall size enlarged. The newest material is especially impossible to make out now. I'm apparently dumb and cannot figure out the exact original images, but I'd like to give it a shot. Huntster (t @ c) 07:12, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Huntster: Finally back online (down for several days due to XS local ACs?) - yes - agree about the graph - could be improved of course - tried earlier but not sufficiently experienced with GIMP/CAD/related to make a better effort at the moment - may try again at my next opportunity, but entirely ok with me if other editors (more experienced with this than I) would like to give it a try of course - hope this helps in some way - in any case - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 19:17, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: Original source is http://www.keckobservatory.org/hr8799c, no evidence that image is released under a free license. Further, credit line states "NRC-HIA" which is the NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics. By NRC-HIA terms and conditions, commercial use is not allowed without permission, thus incompatible with Commons.

Hey Doc, please stop pulling images from Eurekalert without verifying that the original source provided the image under a free license (in which case. As with this above, there is zero evidence that the author released the image under a license compatible with Commons. Huntster (t @ c) 04:54, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Huntster: Thank you for your comments - Yes - *entirely* agree - seems I may have unintentionally overlooked (or misunderstood) the permissions in some way - seems the credit line, apparently "NRC-HIA", may not be associated with NASA or related after a recent look - Thanks again for your comments - and - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 14:21, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, NRC-HIA is a Canadian organisation. My concern with Eurekalert is twofold: they often obfuscate the credit or license of an image they re-post, and the potential strongly exists that such image, even if licensed appropriately, may not be as high of resolution or quality as pulling from an original source. That same concern goes for any site that re-posts material from somewhere else, like Spaceref and others. Huntster (t @ c) 14:39, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Huntster: Yes - my uploaded images (over 1700 at the moment) usually come from the source website(s) (almost always NASA these days) if possible - also yes - seems some websites, like EurekAlert!, could make the permissions clearer (and resolutions better) - expect to watch this more closely going forth - Thanks again for *all* your comments - they're all *greatly* appreciated - Enjoy! :) Drbogdan (talk) 15:53, 12 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I'm aware, it's one of those weird public/private concerns. Regardless, they expressly claim an all rights reserved copyright over their works, and specifically disallow commercial reuse without prior notification. Their structure is complicated and involves a lot of partner, parent, and subsidiary organisation. However, until and unless I get a better feel for them, I'm not going to challenge material where the attribution leads with "NASA/", especially Hubble material (which typically uses NOAO ground telescope data to fill in the edges of Hubble photos, and I feel a de minimis argument could be applied there). Did you see this color image of the parachute linked from that same HiRISE team page: https://www.uahirise.org/releases/perseverance/parachute.jpg
Wow! -- Thinking of England (talk) 03:20, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
While on the subject of "Wow!", here's someone pointing out what appears to be the backshell in an image taken by the rover!: https://twitter.com/astro_fra/status/1363998113548148736
Note this response with a zoom: https://twitter.com/fatdeeman/status/1364019472370176005
I've not independently verified the direction, but it's looks plausible.
To the right of what might be the backshell (if that's really it) there are a few pixels which just might be the parachute. -- Thinking of England (talk) 03:47, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hey again! I just wanted to correct the record here. Now that people have sorted out directions, it appears those bright pixels are to the west-southwest, the wrong direction to be backshell and parachute, which are to the northwest. So presumably just a reflection off some flat rock. -- Thinking of England (talk) 14:48, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hey again, again! Here's a photo showing that shiny rock in more detail, with the original navcam image which started the speculation on the left, a crop from the Mastcam-Z panorama in center, and a Mastcam-Z zoomed photo on the right. Discussed here. Those three photos are from three different times of the day on three consecutive days. -- Thinking of England (talk) 18:13, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Spinning planets[edit]

Spinning SVG animation (animation)

Hi Drbogdan,

I've just seen your query on Village Pump. I've been looking at this topic, in particular, colourising STL files.

I haven't found any good way, so instead used SVG filters to spherise bitmaps. An example is in the thumbnail.

It's not exactly what you asked for but could be a workaround.

If you'd like to explore this further, please let me know.

Cheers,
cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 18:48, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Cmglee: and others - Thank you *very much* for your comments - and your *Excellent* efforts re "Spinning Planets" - they're *greatly* appreciated - I would think this would be a worthy option for some on Wikipedia - for my part, I may need a bit more time to consider some possible uses - I've been busy with other projects recently - in any case - Thanks again for your comments and all - and - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 19:22, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your compliments. Best wishes in your other projects, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 19:51, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

NOTE: Added following to earlier archived discussion (but later reverted due to WP rules re archived discussions) => :BRIEF Followup (04/01/2021) - For those still interested in this project, seems User:cmglee may have created an *Excellent* possible workaround to the challenge by creating the following => Spinning Planets" - also here at => User talk:Drbogdan#Spinning planets - hope this helps in some way - in any case - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 21:15, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Cmglee: QUESTION: is there some way to add an actual "spinning" version (not a static image) of your SVG animation to the "en:Solar system#Visual summary" article - as well as - here on this talk-page section (seems, for me at least, the current SVG animation here on the right side is a static image) - in any case - Thanks in advance for your reply - and - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 16:42, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean to make the thumbnail animated? I don't know of a direct way as SVG thumbnails are PNG files which aren't animated. A workaround is to make the thumbnail that of a GIF animation but use the link parameter to load the SVG. Regardless, animated thumbnails are not recommended as some people find them distracting. If the thumbnail needn't be animated, one can use the link parameter and filepath to load the SVG directly, as I've done for the above thumbnail:

[[File:Solar_system_bodies_rotation_animation.svg|thumb|link={{filepath:Solar_system_bodies_rotation_animation.svg}}|Spinning SVG animation [{{filepath:Solar_system_bodies_rotation_animation.svg}} (animation)]]]

Does this satisfy your needs? Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 21:38, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Cmglee: Thank you for your reply - your comments are very helpful of course - I agree - a GIF version may be distracting to some - unless there may be a click-on/click-off option attached in some way - but this may not be possible with a GIF I would think - in any case - Thank you for your reply and all - and - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 21:53, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Sadly, I don't think one can disable thumbnail GIF animations on Wikipedia, but Web browsers have settings to do so. Stay safe and healthy too, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 19:41, 4 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ahecht: Solved and Clarified - the noted manner of NASA attribution is considered "standard NASA practice" - and is considered *entirely* acceptable to Wikipedia - hope this helps - iac - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 19:58, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Drbogdan! Thank you for the new illustration - I hope nobody shall be against its licenses, for 'PIA24729.jpg' goes directly from NASA storage. The only thing I had to add to the official description was reminding, that this concept of hexacopter is widely known from earlier NASA-related sources, like this:

This is the PDF file, you may download it and see this stuff on page 5. Officially it's called Mars Science Helicopter. So I hope you shall not be against my slight edits in the caption - July 14, 2021 is not the date of birth of this project. Best regards, Cherurbino (talk) 15:00, 15 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ingenuity rotor image[edit]

Hi Doc, hope you're well. Regarding File:PIA24812-MarsIngenuityHelicopter-UpperSwashplateAssembly-20210928.jpg, a higher resolution version was uploader very shortly after yours. Would you be okay with merging them? I ask rather than tag as duplicate because the lettering in the two images is slightly different. Huntster (t @ c) 17:26, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Huntster: Hello - Thanks for your note - we're fine - yes - no problem whatsoever merging (or anything related of course) the images if you like - Thanks again for your note and all - and - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 17:38, 3 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Webb's First Deep Field[edit]

Hi, File:NASA-JWST-FirstDeepField-20220712.png is a small duplicate of File:Main image deep field smacs0723.png, but with a better name and more description. I would merge these. Do you agree? Yann (talk) 20:03, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the proposed merge would not change that. Yann (talk) 11:57, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your comments - yes - there's subtle, but significant, differences in JWST images when compared with the equivalent HST image (at => File:NASA-HubbleSpaceTelescope-DeepField-2017.jpg ) - please do not change the JWST image from the current aligned original (at => File:NASA-JWST-FirstDeepField-20220712.png ) to your proposed non-aligned image (at => File:Main_image_deep_field_smacs0723.png ) - Editors (including myself, w:User:Drbogdan, and w:User:Tomruen), have spent time aligning images to best compare the JWST image with the equivalent HST image (at => File:NASA-HubbleSpaceTelescope-DeepField-2017.jpg ) - Thanks - iac - Stay Safe and Healthy !! - Drbogdan (talk) 12:36, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:PIA25434-OrionNebula-Infrared-20221122.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading File:ISS-ExposeR-Study-DmitriyKondratyev-2014-Roscosmos.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:ISS-ExposeR-Study-DmitriyKondratyev-2014-Roscosmos.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.
