Letter to the Bank of Korea Money Museum 💴

As I am opposed to not sharing off-wiki contact on-wiki I was originally planning on sharing the letter I have sent to the Bank of Korea’s 🏦 Money Museum, however as I submitted that letter 📨 through a web form I no longer have access to it to paste it here, however it did concern these images of a Joseon Tongbo (朝鮮通寶, 조선통보) and a Shibjeon Tongbo (十錢通寶, 조선통보) coin, with the request for the institution to adopt “a Wikimedian in residence” to share images of various collections of their many musea on Wikimedia Commons. This letter was sent somewhere in June 2017 and I have not been able to recover it for transparency’s sake.

This letter also concerned a “乾元重寶” (kon won chung bo / Geon Won Jung Bo) coin. Though if this coin is in fact Korean is disputed. I have not received any letter from the Bank of Korea after my attempt at communicating with them, the next letter 📨 I shall write to the Bank of Korea Money Museum 💴 shall be published here on my talk page, but if there’s plenty of annotation concerning potential Wikimedia Commons categories shall receive its own sub-page 📃.

Letter to the owner of Mywoodprints.free.fr

I found a user named ManuD on Numista that had his/her own personal website here that was filled with information 🛈 on ancient Oriental books 📚 and Asian Cash Coins.

“Dear ManuD,

I saw your wonderful collection of Asian cash coins and woodprint books, are you open to uploading them to Wikimedia Commons so they could be used freely by anyone and could be placed on websites like Wikipedia? In case you're busy yourself but wouldn't mind someone to upload your pictures to Wikimedia Commons, could others upload them for you? Every image imported from your website would link back to your website for sourcing, and the main goal of the website is sharing educational content freely, not for profit.

Yours faithfully, Trung Quoc Don

NMoK uploading tips

They offer high quality images, here's how to download highest quality images offered. Our example here is File:삼한통보 (三韓通寶) and 삼한중보 (三韓重寶) National Museum of Korea.jpg.

  1. Browse NMoK site.
  2. Below the thumb, click this part. It means "download image".
  3. You'll see a popup, with no English. Fear not. It's for tracking their image usage. Just go click darker button @ bottom. If you want to be considerate and give a real reason, that's the second from bottom dropdown.
  4. Browser starts downloading.
  5. ...
  6. PROFIT!

Hope this helps. Also, from the above, myself and WMKR is experienced in convincing government agency to relicense their materials in Commons-compatible license. Myself and Russavia managed to get relicense from Ministry of National Defense and Korea.net, and WMKR iirc worked with National Library of Korea with uploading stuff to Commons, but National Library insisted doing on their own instead of getting help from WMKR (and/or me), so they kinda messed up and I had to clean some of their stuff. If you need something from Korean source, I think you can get better result by letting me contact them via familiar language (Korean) rather than English which scares most of Korean. — regards, Revi 17:38, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

@-revi: This is actually a huge coincidence, as I was about to ask you to contact the Bank of Korea – Money Museum 💴 after I saw that you’re affiliated by the Wikimedia Foundation as you (1) can speak Korean (while I can only understand Hanja 😅), and (2) can actually officially speak for the project while if a random person asks them this could be seen as less than serious (even though Wikimedia Commons is a volunteer project).
As for downloading the best quality images, oddly enough it doesn't work on my cell.-phone, I’ve attempted it and the logo's are very easy to recognise, but for some reason I can’t download the best quality images so I just decided to stop downloading them from the National Museum of Korea as the images I would upload simply aren't of “the best quality”, so I decided to stop using the National Museum of Korea. I might install another browser on my cell.-phone 📞 to test if I could download them that way, but I keep getting an error message on Microsoft Edge, anyhow I don't have much trouble browsing through Korean, Hangul is easy to read and Korean is 60% Chinese, but I did in fact wanted to ask you if you ever have the time to contact the Bank of Korea Money Museum.
Navigating through Korean is easy, heck I already joined the WikiProject Numismatics on Korean Wikipedia, though I only have three edits there so far so it probably wasn't a wise decision. 😅
I have personally already contacted several GLAM’s here in the Netherlands and have offered to help upload their photographs to Wikimedia Commons, there’s a fire-fighting museum here that wants to upload 3000 images to Wikimedia Commons, but they still have to find the time to photograph their inventory and find a volunteer with a good camera to do so.

Myself working for WMF does not mean I can represent the Foundation when I talk with GLAM, but I also have @wikimedia.kr (WMKR) email address, so I can use that position when working with them. I'll put that museum in to-do, but I can't guarantee it will be done soon. — regards, Revi 12:07, 24 December 2017 (UTC)

Lesson I had learned from trying to contact Gary Ashkenazy

From a previous encounter he was very upset that his domain got blacklisted because of me, I explained to him (Gary Ashkenazy) that he could still upload images to Wikimedia Commons if he (Gary Ashkenazy) so wished, but because of the negative experiences and hostile culture of Wikimedia Commons and Wikimedia projects in general I think that Gary Ashkenazy (גארי אשכנזי) has permanently withdrawn from the idea 💡 of joining Wikimedia Commons. It's such a shame that simply because I insulted another editor that in the eyes 👀 of administrators it made me “a paid editor” which caused them to remove all sources I used in articles, you’d think that educational content would be the number one concern on an educational website but apparently punishing users is more important which is probably why GLAM’s and creators prefer to work more with for-profit companies like Verizon (through Flickr) to create things like The Commons (or “Flickr Commons”) than with openly anti-GLAM websites like Wikimedia projects. If there’s something that I have learned from trying to contact Gary Ashkenazy, Vladimir Belyaev, Dr. Luke Roberts, and Dr. R. Allan Barker it's that the culture of Wikimedia projects openly discourage content creators and favours deletionism and exclusionism over education, and content creators can see this so they simply refuse to join. Admittedly Dr. R. Allan Barker didn't join because of the fear 😱 that scammers might use images of Vietnamese cash coins uploaded here to make forgeries. Maybe it’s best that I stop contacting site owners, but even if one would join then I would consider it “a victory ✌🏻”, the largest problem here is that overzealous “spam-fighters” are so paranoid for “paid editing” that they’ll blacklist any website used by any blocked user.

Letters to Gary Ashkenazy

My interest in Primal Trek originally started with his long and well-detailed article on Korean coins with mint marks while at the time Wikipedia only had a stub, I imported the full page with all the mint marks and subsequently used Primal Trek to create articles on the coinages of every Chinese dynasty.

This page exists to share the e-mails I have exchanged with Mr. Gary Ashkenazy (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) from Primal Trek (or Primaltrek) requesting him to upload his images to Wikimedia Commons. Gary Ashkenazy participates in a number of coin forums using the nickname “manymore" which I have also attempted to contact him with, but also with no response.

I have never been employed by Mr. Gary Ashkenazy and have no vested interest in linking to Primal Trek, this page only exists because I believe that off-wiki contact related to Wikimedia projects should be published on-wiki.

June 5th, 2017

"Dear Mr. Ashkenazy,

I am here to request something of you if you’re interested, I want to write more about Chinese coins, and charms on Wikipedia and have already started referencing your work, unfortunately there aren’t that many images available so I would kindly like to ask if you are willing to upload pictures of all of your Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Ryukyuan coins and charms to Wikimedia Commons so the Wikipedian community could share your work and knowledge with the world.

Thank you for your time.

Yours faithfully,
Mr. Trung (徵)

Titled: “Cultural preservation.” (June 10th, 2017)

On June 10th, 2017 I sent this letter to Gary Ashkenazy through his public e-mail 📧 listed as “chinesecharms@gmail.com” which is this person’s preferred method of direct communication. As of the day I pasted it here I have not received any communications back from Gary Ashkenazy.

“Dear Gary,

I would like to suggest to you to upload pictures of every Chinese coin and charm in your possession to Wikimedia Commons for historical and cultural preservation. It’ll essentially be gratis hosting and if for any reason you'd ever lose Primaltrek all the information would still be accessible by future generations.

Yours faithfully,
A long time reader.

Sent from my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL with Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile 📱.”

I had accidentally sent this with my Gmail instead of my Microsoft Outlook account, for this reason I didn't use my name in at the sender, but like the previous electronic letter I have not received a reply from Mr. Gary Ashkenazy. Yes, I did try to advertise Wikimedia Commons as a gratis hosting service for Gary Ashkenazy’s images, but let’s be honest images of historical artifacts are fully within Wikimedia Commons’ scope, and Wikimedia Commons is a lot more likely to exist 100 (one-hundred) years from now than Gary Ashkenazy’s Primaltrek/Primal Trek.

Consulted methods of contact

Korean cash coins on Wikimedia Commons

Chinese cash coins on Wikimedia Commons

A lot of Wikipedia articles already depend on the text from Gary Ashkenazy's Primaltrek / Primal trek, but the only real advantage Gary Ashkenazy's Primaltrek / Primal trek still has is it's illustrative images.

Too much to list here, please see Category:Coins of China by period. The completeness of Chinese cash coins surely is disputable, but as a general rule I would say that Wikimedia Commons has more images of Chinese cash coins than Gary Ashkenazy’s Primaltrek/Primal Trek largely thanks to the photographs of Jean-Michel Moullec uploaded by Baomi, but Gary Ashkenazy’s Primaltrek/Primal Trek still has better quality images of Chinese cash coins. I think that Wikimedia Commons will be the superior platform for finding images of Chinese cash coins, but that Gary Ashkenazy’s Primaltrek/Primal Trek will remain the internet’s preferred reference for Korean mun coins for the foreseeable future. Also note 📝 that all the Wikipedia articles I have expanded largely based on both Gary Ashkenazy’s Primaltrek/Primal Trek and David Hartill’s “Cast Chinese Coins” have made Wikipedia the superior source because it also integrated information from more sources PLUS THEM, if you're looking for anything other than specific variants and/or images, so in general Wikimedia projects win 🏆 when it comes to information about Chinese and other cash coins, but are still lacking the images, this is why I value my work more on Wikimedia Commons than on Wikipedia as my work on Wikipedia is as good as “complete” while there are so many images that are lacking on Wikimedia Commons that Gary Ashkenazy’s Primaltrek/Primal Trek and various other websites have.

Letter concerning Chinese charms

On December 30th, 2017 I contacted Gary Ashkenazy who has written a plethora of articles on Chinese charms, on Primaltrek / Primal trek, and 41 more articles on his Primaltrek-blog / Primal trek-blog. He (Gary Ashkenazy) has hundreds of images of Chinese charms on Primaltrek / Primal trek, so I requested him to upload them here on Wikimedia Commons.

“Dear Gary Ashkenazy,

Can you please upload your images of Chinese charms to Wikimedia Commons, a user by the name of Baomi is interested, you can upload them to this category:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Chinese_numismatic_charms

And you can contact Baomi through this link 🔗:

Yours faithfully, Mr. Trung (徵)

This letter 📨 was sent because Baomi wanted to have more images for Category:Chinese numismatic charms to use for Mandarin-Chinese Wikipedia, most unfortunately Gary Ashkenazy doesn't release his images on Primaltrek / Primal trek with a free to use license, so I can only import images of scans like these or these, and such. I really hope that Gary Ashkenazy will upload all of his images of Chinese charms to Wikimedia Commons, when it comes to Chinese charms there is almost nothing here. Personally I don’t like Chinese charms or the idea 💡 of “good luck 🍀 coins” as I believe that they’re all backwards superstitions, but the history behind them is interesting and though I do not plan on writing ✍🏻 much about Chinese charms myself (even though I use website’s like Vladimir Belyaev’s Charm.ru for Chinese numismatic articles), I think that the work Gary Ashkenazy on Chinese charms does should be imported, but that their descriptions fit more in the “information 🛈” panels of their images on Wikimedia Commons than as a Wikipedia article.

Notification: I uploaded all your images of banknotes to Wikimedia Commons (02 D. 01 M. 2017 A.)

One of the 30 (thirty) PD-scan banknotes I had imported from Gary Ashkenazy’s Primaltrek / Primal Trek

“Dear Gary Ashkenazy,

I want to inform you of the fact that I’ve uploaded all images of Chinese banknotes hosted on Primaltrek to Wikimedia Commons, if you’re curious where you can find them check here:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Banknotes_of_the_Republic_of_China_(1912-1949)

Category:Banknotes of the Republic of China (1912-1949)

The fact that they are now hosted on Wikimedia Commons means that they can now be freely used by other people, as these images were already in the public domain I would like to notify you that you (Mr. Gary Ashkenazy) wasn’t the copyright © holder in the first place.

Yours faithfully, Mr. Trung (徵)

Sent 📩 from my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL with Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile 📱.”

I think that it would be a nice courtesy to contact the creator of the PD-scans to let them know that I have imported their images to Wikimedia Commons. Though some would consider this “gratis advertisement” (especially the Wikimedia Commons “community”), many website owners might consider this to be intrusive or even outright “(intellectual property) theft”, but as these images are all in the public domain sir Gary Ashkenazy can't really complain about them being uploaded here. 😅

Letters to Vladimir Belyaev

This is a collection of the letters I have sent to Mr. Vladimir Belyaev (Cyrillic script: Владимир Беляев) to request him to upload his images to Wikimedia Commons.

Mr. Vladimir Belyaev has responded to these, but because of copyright © reasons I can only add the electronic mails that I've sent to him.

09 D. 07 M. 2017 A.

"Dear Mr. Belyaev,

I know that you're a very busy man and believe me I do not wish to disturb you, but concerning your images on Charm.ru, and Zeno.ru to release them onto Wikimedia Commons a bot can easily upload them for you, but prior to this you must give Wikimedia Commons consent to use your images, I will briefly extend the rights you would retain to those images, once uploaded there others may freely use them including for commercial purposes, however you may say that whomever uses them must always attribute you whatever circumstances (this I would personally recommend), further the rights of the individual images on your sites are also important, are you the sole copyright holder of every photograph of every coin and/or charm on your site? If so then a simple short e-mail to Wikimedia Commons (address below) shall suffice, however if some images are not yours and you're still interested you may explain how these are differentiated on your site. I hope that I have not wasted your time, and I most sincerely hope that if you’re still interested in sharing your images that you would take the time to e-mail them an explain which images and under what license you want them published.

Yours faithfully,
Mr. Trung"

10 D. 07 M. 2017 A.

"Excuse me for bothering you again, Mr. Belyaev,

I forgot to add that you don’t have to programme the bot to upload pictures to Wikimedia Commons, they will do it by themselves, all you would have to do is mail them permission and what copyright to the images you would retain (the license), other than that all it would take from your part is just an e-mail with your permission.

I hope that you’re still interested,
Mr. Trung

Letters to Dr. R. Allan Barker

A Bảo Đại Thông Bảo (保大通寶) cash coin from French Indo-China.

On 21:23 29 D. 11 M. 2017 A. I sent this (electronic) letter to Dr. R. Allan Barker requesting him to upload images of cash 💰 coins to Wikimedia Commons, if you by any chance came across this page and own Vietnamese cash coins yourself then please go to Category:Coins of Vietnam and Category:Coins of French Indochina and look for the cash coins that are currently missing. If you own of those then feel free to upload a picture 📷 of it. 😉

“Dear Dr. Ba{r}ker,

Hello I am a fellow coin collector who shares an interest in the numismatic history of the Orient. To help make knowledge of the history of Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean Ryukyuan, and Japanese cash coins more freely available to everyone I started writing and expanding articles on Wikipedia that cover these subjects, after that I started uploading pictures of the cash coins I own to Wikimedia Commons. Most unfortunately I do not own as many cash coins as are featured in your wonderful books so I request that if you would find the time that you would upload pictures of your coins to Wikimedia Commons (and the images of rubbings if possible) so they can be freely shared with the world and used on Wikipedia to help illustrate these subjects.

Yours faithfully, Donald Trung Quoc Don”

Second electronic-letter to Dr. R. Allan Barker

Today I had received Dr. Barker's first reply, unfortunately because of copyright © restrictions I am not permitted to share this one here, but as I am an avid believer that anything related to Wikimedia projects should be openly available on Wikimedia projects I shall copy paste my reply here, for context I will explain Dr. Barker's response in a manner that is permitted for this project. The response by Dr. Barker was very short, it was mostly just a request to have a few links to some {W}iki{pedia} articles so I provided them to him.

"Dear Dr. Barker,
No one has “their” wiki articles as Wikipedia is a collaborative medium, but here are a few links to some cash coins related articles
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnamese_cash
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryukyuan_mon
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_mun
But images would have to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, Wikimedia Commons is where most the images used on Wikipedia are stored, and these images can be used for educational purposes outside of Wikipedia as well, I will add these relevant links here.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Project_scope
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Reusing_content_outside_Wikimedia
This also means that if someone were to reuse any of the images you upload to Wikimedia Commons that they would have to credit you by name (if you so choose to upload it with that license)
And these are a few categories for cash coins:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Coins_of_the_Joseon_Dynasty
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Coins_of_Vietnam
I would also advise you to add very detailed descriptions of the histories of each individual coin and its variants because a lot of that information might be too detailed for Wikipedia but is quite useful for Wikimedia Commons. I understand that you’re busy and if you ever decide to upload images of cash coins you can e-mail me back and I shall be here to guide you.
Yours faithfully,
Donald Trung Quoc Don
Sent from my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL with Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile 📱."

Well, because I don't want to end up in the spambox I rarely send links 🔗 in the first mail 📧 establishing contact, I explained to him that Wikipedia is a collaborative project and that no-one owns an article on Wikipedia. As Dr. Barker is very busy I do not expect him to be uploading any images here soon, and honestly I personally think of most cash coins-related articles as having been "completed" in mid-July 2017 (yes, by myself) and basically all I have been doing since is translation but images are very much needed (especially for Vietnamese/Annamese cash coins) so I will continue to browse eBay for "missing coins" but from what I can tell letting Dr. Barker share his collection would probably complete 95% of all "missing" cash coins on Wikimedia Commons. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 10:22, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

One final important link concerning Wikimedia Commons (third letter)

“Dear Dr. Barker,
I would like to share another link from Wikimedia Commons with you:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Ownership_of_pages_and_files
After uploading any photographs and/or rubbings of coins to Wikimedia Commons you can still be considered to be the copyright holder of these images and may request restrictions on their reuse to make sure that you and/or your work is always properly attributed (unless you would choose to release them into the public domain), you would still retain copyright to your images but uploading them there would allow others to use them in educational settings.
This is the UploadWizard:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard
Yours sincerely,
Donald Trung Quoc Don
Sent from my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL with Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile 📱.”

I sent this letter to make sure that Dr. R. Allan Barker knows that he wouldn't lose the copyright © to any of his images after uploading them to Wikimedia Commons, unfortunately many people don't want their images here as it would make them freely usable outside of this project.

Regarding imitations and forgeries (fourth letter)

So I had received a message from dear Dr. Barker concerning a possible venture in uploading images to Wikimedia Commons, by response is below:

“Dear Allan,
I fully agree with the fact that modern forgeries are in fact a problem and I wouldn't argue against the fact that if images of these coins were publicly available that it would make it easier for those in the business of producing fake coins to scam more easily, but this is equally true about the images from your wonderful book. Scammers can simply purchase a copy of your book (or worse, pirate a copy from an online wharez site) and use those images as the basis for their imitation, but the business of high quality fakes isn't as big as low quality forgeries and maybe it might sound naïve from my side but I would guess that if everyone would have access to images of genuine specimens that they could use them to avoid purchasing low-quality forgeries (this is especially true for novice collectors). I fully understand your reservations about releasing high quality images of these though, but the truth is that most new collectors will probably first look for information on wiki’s (this is true for myself as a decade ago my introduction to cash coins was via Wikipedia) and having an extensive library of images would show these new collectors not just the beauty of cash coins but their rich variety and history.
I personally have purchased forgeries in the past and when I upload(ed) images of those forgeries to Wikimedia Commons I had specifically noted how I could tell that they weren't genuine specimens to warn others from not making the mistakes I made. Also remember that (non-free) images are already available online that the bad guys have access to with a quick search.
My advice would be that if you were to consider uploading them that you would describe in detail how to spot the forgeries or if this would be giving the bad guys advice what to avoid I would advise only including the history of every individual coin. Well, if you ever want to share your collection on Wikimedia Commons I will be available here for you and you may ask me anything and I shall try my best to inform you appropriately, enjoy your work. ;-)
Yours faithfully,
Donald Trung Quoc Don
P.S.
You can also write essays on how to spot forgeries and what techniques the bad guys use on Wikimedia Commons to make that knowledge more openly available to others as well, it's sad that a hobby like coin-collecting is being perverted by forgers, I like holding a little piece of culture and history in my hands but the idea that it's possibly fake spoils the idea that you’re holding Ancient Vietnamese history.
Sent from my Microsoft Lumia 950 XL with Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile 📱.”

This was the reaction I wrote, I do have to admit that the possibility of forgers using Wikimedia Commons to get their models from is a possibility that I haven't considered prior. I shall be honest in that this is an issue I can't debunk because it's factual, however these images are largely already available on other websites.

Well, I can't say that Dr. Barker is my only option but as Charm.ru/Zeno.ru didn't work out as well as I had hoped (Vladimir Belyaev being mostly busy with maintaining his own website) I did find good news in that Dr. Barker saying that he’s already well-versed in Wiki’s as he said that he had his own wiki’s. I think 🤔 that the largest problem with the numismatic communities on Wikimedia projects is that many simply don’t consider donating images of their own collections to Wikimedia Commons, many articles are missing images of coins that go for less than $ 0,50 on eBay. Unfortunately Pinterest and Flickr are still better media for finding images than Wikimedia Commons.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Buckler's Hard 18-09-2012 (8026373240) (2).jpg, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

@Leoboudv: this file is Stele, the weird part is that I manually deselected that file 📁. So Flickr2Commons shouldn't have uploaded it in the first place. --Donald Trung (Talk 💬) ("The Chinese Coin Troll" 👿) (Articles 📚) 09:46, 29 December 2017 (UTC)
