Welcome to the newsletter for Structured Data on Wikimedia Commons! You can update your subscription to the newsletter and contribute to the next issue. Do inform others who you think will want to be involved in the project!

Community updates
  • Our dedicated IRC channel: wikimedia-commons-sd webchat
  • Since our last newsletter, the Structured Data team has moved into designing and building prototypes for various features. The use of multilingual captions in the UploadWizard and on the file page has been researched, designed, discussed, and built out for use. Behind the scenes, back-end work on search is taking place and designs are being drawn up for the front-end. There will soon be specifications published for the use of the first Wikidata property on Commons, "Depicts," and a prototype is to be released to go along with that.

Two research projects about Wikimedia Commons are currently ongoing, or in the process of being finished:

  1. Research:Curation workflows on Wikimedia Commons—a project that seeks to understand the current workflows of Commons contributors who curate media (categorize it, delete it, link to it from other projects, etc.).
  2. Research:Technical needs of external re-users of Commons media—soliciting feedback from individuals and organizations that re-use Commons content outside of Wikimedia projects, in order to understand their current painpoints and unmet needs.

Structured Data Newsletter - Research link fix

Greetings,

The newsletter omitted two interwiki prefixes, breaking the links on non-meta wikis as you might see above. Here are the correct links:

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

  • WebM video files have smaller file size but still be of the same quality. Creating WebM files will take longer time. [1]
  • The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. This was supposed to already have happened but was delayed. For most wikis this will happen on 9 July. For the rest it will happen on 16 July. [2]
  • Advanced item All wikis now use the Remex parsing library instead of Tidy. This could cause errors. You can help fix the errors. [3]

Problems

  • When you rolled back an edit it could get both the Rollback and Undo tags. This has been fixed. [4]
  • Rollbacks from autopatrolled users were not marked as patrolled. This has been fixed. [5]

Changes later this week

  • When you edit a link in the visual editor there will be two separate buttons to change which page the link goes to (target) or its text (label). [6][7]
  • On the mobile version you can find a link to an editor's contributions from their user page. Now this will work even if they haven't created a user page. [8]
  • When you edit a discussion on the mobile version you sometimes get your signature automatically added. This will now not happen if you have already added a signature manually. This is to avoid double signatures. [9]
  • Structured discussions toolbars will have more style options. [10]
  • Advanced item When you look at Wikimedia code in Gerrit there will be a new interface. It is on by default for new users. This is also true for developers. This is to make it easier to understand what is happening. [11]
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 July. It will be on all wikis from 12 July (calendar).

Future changes

  • Today all administrators can edit CSS and JavaScript for the entire wiki. There will be a new user group for editing CSS and JavaScript. Administrators will no longer automatically be able to do this. This is because it is a security risk when all administrator accounts can edit JavaScript even if they never plan to or do not know how it works. You can read more. [12]
  • Page previews will be on by default for new accounts. [13]

Gelovige amuletten

Wat zijn gelovige Chinese amuletten? Ik wist niet dat amuletten een zelfbewustzijn hadden. Bedoel je religieuze Chinese amuletten?

Over pr0n, hoewel er sommige gebruikers op een kruistocht tegen porno zijn is naakt over het algemeen ook wel problematisch. Bij twijfel of iemand wel meerderjarig is kan je iets beter verwijderen, in tegenstelling tot commerciële producenten van fapmateriaal vraagt hier niemand of de acteurs en actrices even hun rijbewijs kunnen tonen om de leeftijd te verifiëren. Daarnaast is er vaak twijfel of het materiaal wel bedoeld was voor publicatie. Bij een foto van iemand die een ijsje eet is dat niet zo'n probleem, maar bij naakt dekt {{Personality rights}} de lading over het algemeen niet. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:38, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: Ten eerste bedankt voor de verbetering ik pas het meteen aan (al denk ik dat als die Chinese amuletten zouden leven dat zij dan gelovig zouden zijn maar hun gebruikers meteen naar Christendom gaan converteren om van die “demonen” af te komen domme grap), ik zie ook in een keer dat ook per ongeluk een link naar Marcel van Hooijdonk (https://marcelvanhooijdonk.wordpress.com/2017/12/07/woningcorporaties-vragen-te-weinig-huur-voor-bepaalde-woningen/) heb gebruikt in plaats van de blog die ik bedoelde. En over de pornografische bestanden heb ik het natuurlijk niet over de foto’s van naakte kinderen want die worden hier terecht verwijdert, dat bedoel ik niet alleen vanuit een cultureel (of moreel) oogpunt maar ook vanuit een juridisch oogpunt sinds in landen zoals Frankrijk normale foto’s van naakte kinderen strafbaar zijn, natuurlijk hoeft de Stichting Wikimedia zich niet aan de Franse wet te houden als de foto’s uit Frankrijk zelf komen, maar ik neem aan dat iedereen kinderporno ongewest vindt dus acht ik de kans klein dat die foto’s behouden worden. Mijn probleem is dat gebruikers zoals Gebruiker:stan_old (ik denk dat ik het goed schrijf) soms goede foto’s van zijn vrouw (die overigens duidelijk meerderjarig is) upload die best wel in een realistische educatieve situatie gebruikt kan worden, om één of andere reden zijn honderden foto’s van dezelfde toeristische attractie acceptabel omdat zij allemaal “vanuit een unieke creatieve hoek zijn gefotografeerd” of “het jaar dat het was gefotografeerd goed representeert” en als Inclusionist ben ik het met beide meningen eens, maar van pornografische onderwerpen lijkt de mening vaak te zijn “één is te veel”. Kan je Wikimedia Commons als pornosite zien? Ja, er zit hier best veel en niet alles is van optimale kwaliteit. Ik zelf heb niet zoveel met consumeren van pornografie en alhoewel mijn vrouw er van houdt te kijken en mij daartoe dwingt zie ik het vanuit een neutraal oogpunt, de meeste mensen consumeren het als een vorm van procreatie recreatie (ja, domme grap) en denk ik dat veel mensen juist daarom al het pornografische materiaal van Wikimedia Commons af willen halen omdat zij daar weinig van het educatieve nut inzien. Gebruiker:Fæ klaagt hier ook wel eens over. Mensen hebben niet eens noodzakelijk porno nodig voor hun behoeften kijk maar naar hoe Gebruiker:INeverCry (of als Gebruiker:Daphne Lantier) de categorie vrouwelijke modellen uit Zuid-Korea de licenties reviewde... oké, weer een flauwe grap, maar het gaat hier om de principe dat wat door de één als recreatie gezien kan worden juist door de andere als educatief wordt ervaren.
Persoonlijk ben ik niet zozeer bekend met de persoonlijkheidsrechten van naakte lichamen, gelden persoonlijkheidsrechten niet alleen voor gezichten? Of andere “herkenbare kenmerken”?

Portretrecht (in Nederland) gaat inderdaad over mensen die herkenbaar op beeld staan. Meestal, maar niet altijd, omdat hun gezicht te zien is, "het is voldoende dat de geportretteerde herkend kan worden door iemand die de geportretteerde kent". Bij neutrale foto's zal dit niet zo snel problemen opleveren, maar bij naaktfoto's die niet voor publicatie bedoeld waren is het haast een garantie voor problemen en privacyinbreuk. Commons wil natuurlijk geen site worden waar je wraak kan nemen op je ex door dergelijk materiaal te uploaden. INC/Daphne heb ik niet echt meegemaakt (afgezien van wat vandalistische sokpoppen), dat was in 2017 en eerder. Afgezien van AshFriday heb ik dit hier niet veel gezien, maar ik volg ook niet alles.
Je zei "om deze reden lijken veel pornografische artikels op Wikipedia’s afbeeldingen tekort te komen", heb je hier voorbeelden van? Misschien maak ik een tegenhanger voor Commons:Commons does not need you to drop your pants and grab a camera. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 05:40, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

@Alexis Jazz: Oké bedankt, ik zou eerlijk zijn dat ik geen verwijderridder kan zijn, ik vindt het zo'n mooie smiley, hopelijk als Moheen op Wikipedia een artikel over Bangla Music Station begint neemt hij mijn advies en gaat hij het lokaal uploaden, gelukkig kan je bijna alles op Wikipedia uploaden, maar hier zijn de regels wat ingewikkelder. On Saturday my wife dropped her LG K10 (2017) smartphone in a river, I still had +/- 300 photographs from that device to upload to Wikimedia Commons, her best-friend gave her a "What the Heo" Nokia Lumia 730 replacement smartphone 📱, when the issue with the mobile 📱 logging in problems are solved I will use that mobile telephone for future photography until my wife buys another device with Google Android, as the photographs are backed up in Google Photo's and not in Google Drive it is entirely possible that I will upload a few hundred pictures 📷 (possibly) without metadata, if you wish 🌠 to dominate any image I took in Delft, the Hague, Winschoten., Etc.
