Description missing[edit]

Hallo DieBuche. --Leyo 14:43, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Erfassen müsste gehen, nachtragen vielleicht. Hast du mal ein Beispiel dafür?--DieBuche (talk) 15:36, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Beispiel: File:Festina F16184 4.jpg --Leyo 16:11, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
--Leyo 19:11, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
--DieBuche (talk) 18:00, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Gut gemacht! --Leyo 18:46, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

kuckemal - meinst Du, das passt nu so?--Biktora (talk) 19:33, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ja, Danke --DieBuche (talk) 19:57, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but you are wrong about this [3]. The Polish name is Siebież, not Siebiež. Siebiež is Belarusian Lacinka, but it's a town in Russia (and was in Russia when the picture was taken as well) and has never been a part of Belarus. There are no reasons not to name this photo by using the official English name of the town Sebezh. — Gleb Borisov (talk) 03:13, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse me, but what does that mean [4][5]? You seem to have ignored my first message concerning the name of Sebezh. The case with Velizh is analogical. This is a town in Russia and has never been a part of Belarus, in addition this photo has been taken, when it was a part of Russia as well. And I repeat, these names are not written in Polish, but in Belarusian Latin alphabet. Vialiž is not even in the official Belarusian, but in Taraškevica orthography. So, please, don't do such actions any more, and rename these files, using their official English names according to the Russian language. Gleb Borisov (talk) 14:14, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry that I oversaw your first comment. I thought that Siebiež were the polish name & according to the renaming rules, changing the language is not a valid reason. Since you make a reasonable case, consider these files renamed.--DieBuche (talk) 15:24, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you in advance. — Gleb Borisov (talk) 15:30, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Did I get all? I'm not sure--DieBuche (talk) 15:39, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, what do you mean?
If you have time, please, rename the following files as well:

SVG fixing[edit]

Thank you for the SVG problem fixing in my File:Gobian Altai topography.svg image! Can you tell me what is possible to do to prevent this kind of problem in future? If i will edit this image (I will!) can I fix this problem? Bogomolov.PL (talk) 17:27, 20 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

CorelDraw often outputs incorrect svgs. In most cases, opening the file with inkscape & resaving as "optimized svg" gets rid of those problems --DieBuche (talk) 19:59, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Description missing[edit]

Many of images which was tagged as "Description missing" by user:DieBucheBot has an appropriately descriptive name. I think, the bot should have as the default treatment to copy the image name to the "description" field, the second treatment to copy description from some Wikipedia article where is the image used (it would be diffucult to pre-set) and only the third treatment to insert {{Description missing}}. --ŠJů (talk) 01:37, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This was just the first step to get those images into the right category. Next one is the bot adding descriptions previously lost due to a bug by commonshelper, for example here. Afterwords I might try to fetch descriptions from other wikis using What is that written by magnus.--DieBuche (talk) 01:57, 21 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Recompression[edit]

OK. It was not my intention to recompress the photos. It was a "private iniciative" of my new computer. I observed the problem after the time I had uploaded some photos and bot signed it with "size not found". Finnaly I found the way to upload without recompression. Please do not vandalize other user's uploads as you did to File:Caucasus region Ovest.jpg. The file was clearly marked that the uploader wanted a border on the image. Please see the file history and links to the file. -Nard the Bard 01:27, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To honest, I fail to see how this is "vandalizing". On commons there is a general consent to avoid images having borders, watermarks or other elements which solely distract from their content etc. The other images in Category:Images_with_intentional_borders are all images which have a border either out of their historical contect, for example File:K._Malewich_Black_Square_1913.jpg, or are only used on personal user pages such as File:Gujoh2.JPG. I can't see how a border on this image is any beneficial, and if you look at the file history, I was not the first one to think that. The file is not even the user "own" creation, where such a stylistic device might be more easily accepted, but just taken from here. If you want to challenge common policies, please take it to COM:VP--DieBuche (talk) 13:12, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear friend.

In Gdansk are as many as four town halls. Four! Above average. The need to change the name to avoid confusion. Only one word: "Main". Only one word: "Main". --Starscream (talk) 20:25, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why didn't just state that as a reason for the rename, would have avoided any confusion. moved--DieBuche (talk) 20:29, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

DieBuche, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Thanks for renaming my file[edit]

You renamed my file "Jussieu Antoine de.jpg" into "Jussieu Antoine Laurent.jpg". I asked for the renaming of this file on May 18, so I'm glad at last someone took notice. But when I created the tag, I asked for the file to be renamed into "Jussieu Antoine Laurent de.jpg". It's not quite clear to me but I guess you misread the tag and omitted the " de" in the new name. Would you be able to correct that? Meanwhile I asked for two other files, derived from the same picture, to be renamed too, on the same date. Can you see if you can find "Jussieu Antoine de cropped.jpg" and "Jussieu Antoine de medaillon.jpg" and rename them according to the tag included? And if these questions bother you, can you tell me how I could get the appropriate rights to rename my files myself because it certainly bothers me if it takes about two weeks before my applications for renaming files are taken into consideration and then only in part. - Wikiklaas (talk) 20:32, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, i mistook the de as a suffix for "german"; I'll rename those later. You can apply here Commons:Requests for rights‎--DieBuche (talk) 20:41, 31 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File mover[edit]

Thank you, I see now. May I ask one question? If there are links on file, but they are just one or two, may I change image names by myself, or it is necessary to give command to commons delinker? Regards, --Gaeser (talk) 10:34, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If there are just a few or even no links to the image, you can of course change them manually. It just gets tiresome if the image is widely used--DieBuche (talk) 10:38, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

moved pictures[edit]

Hallo, habe gesehen, du hast ein "clean up" beim delinker gemacht.

NobbiP 18:55, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

DieBucheBot edit summary[edit]

I still think it could be helpful if it would list at least part of the imported description in the edit summary. -- User:Docu at 15:40, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Overall, I think the result is excellent. I wonder if it wouldn't be worth doing the same to add descriptions in languages we don't have yet. -- User:Docu at 15:46, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I stopped the bot for now & will do the following changes to the code later on: 1. Check for existing languages & don't add another one of it. 2. Ignore descriptions below a certain character limit (I saw a few cases where the whole description was
English: 1.
What summary do you think would be better:
  1. Bot: Adding automatically fetched description for en, fr, de
(cutoff at 70 characters)

--DieBuche (talk) 17:29, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I'd add as much of the description text as possible (possibly en if available). +Maybe a count of the number of languages. -- User:Docu at 11:12, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please excuse that I didn't get to reply earlier.
The current version (Bot: Adding automatically created description for en, es, pt, ro; minor fixes) is fine too.

Template replacement[edit]

Hello. For your information. The fact that you replaced some templates, which was a good move, such as in Info:USS_Yorktown_(CV-5), caused a number of info: galleries to be no longer categorized as you can see in Special:UncategorizedPages. --Foroa (talk) 15:44, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. The template now categorizes into Info pages & if existing into a category of the same name. Obviously the pages will stay in Special:UncategorizedPages until the cache is cleared--DieBuche (talk) 16:32, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Great. I am somewhat surprised not to see the info:xxx as an item in the categories, but not sure if this is really important. --Foroa (talk) 16:54, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(Reset indent for another point) I noticed that after category moves, you tend to blank categories. Some categories should have a redirect after a move, others (blatant errors, common in/of/from mistakes, plural errors) are to be deleted with preferably an edit summary stating where the category has been moved to. Blanking a category or a page makes that the category appears several days later in Special:UncategorizedCategories or Special:UncategorizedPages which we try to keep as empty as possible (takes several hours per week), but requires significant work as we have to analyse each case if it concerns vandalisme, mistakes, beginners work (that may need assistance) or just a plain categorisation problem. So following the standard procedure saves us all unnecessary work and as a courtesy to the creators, the edit summary tells where the category has been moved to. Thank you and keep up the good work. --Foroa (talk) 16:54, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That's because Info: is not an official namespace...The blankings, I just hadn't got around on deleting/redirecting the pages after I put the move request on Delinkers commands--DieBuche (talk) 17:40, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure? All the sub-cats have lowercaps.--DieBuche (talk) 17:56, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. The subcats were made wrong, so I am trying to fix them. I am also trying to fix them for all prefectures too. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:22, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
When looking in Category:Kanagawa Prefecture and Category:Prefectures of Japan all prefectures (generic terms such as the cantons in Switzerland) are not capitalised. --Foroa (talk) 18:25, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
But when we use it in general English, Foo Prefecture and Blah Canton are capitalized, but not sure why for the cats they are not. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 00:29, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In general, in English title cases are mixed up with proper nouns. Prefecture or canton are not necessarily part of the original name, it can be considered as a qualifier. I hardly find articles on the en:wikipedia that are consistent in that aspect. While, normally, you should write the Rhone valley (lower case v) and Silicon Valley (capital V), while referring in the text to the valley in the first case, Valley in the second. In practise, it get all mixed up. Both positions are arguable, but what is important is that the use of the capitals is consistent across the country, which is the case in Japan and Switzerland. --Foroa (talk) 06:00, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For Japan, I would like to use capitals. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 07:40, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

--DieBuche (talk) 14:47, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DieBuche, Can you explain why you uploaded the duplicate ? –Krinkletalk 19:19, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mainly to create a "normal" unprotected version of the icon, independent of the one which is protected since it is widely used in the Mediawiki messages. --DieBuche (talk) 13:28, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
