Tagging

Hey, I noticed that one of my uploaded files was tagged with {{No permission}} by Hedwig in Washington. This is while I had already provided all the details I could, to prove the license. I can also refer you to another uploads of mine from the same source, where you reviewed and verified the license. As I think there's no more thing to do on my part, please see if the file has any licensing issues. Thank you. Mbazri (talk) 07:33, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

@Mbazri, I would recommend putting the quote from the website in quotation marks to make the license notice more apparent to reviewers. While we're on the topic, these illustrations look fine by the artist's release but I have a sinking feeling that they're are based on someone else's depiction (e.g., a photograph). If these are just illustrated versions of someone else's photographs, they would be a potential copyright violation of the photographer's capture. Does anything on the site say anything about this? Also in the case of this specific file, the source link is dead so we're unable to verify that the image came from the site. There doesn't appear to be a backup in the Internet Archive. czar 07:43, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

Possibly invalid license

Regardless of the claim of the file being "own work", I think there may be a copyvio on File:Icon-Mac.svg. You recently removed a tag from that item, but please see the talk page. (Best to ping upon reply as I'm more active on other projects.) Etamni  10:34, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

@Etamni, {{Licensereview}} is a tag for verifying whether the license at a file's source matches its listed source (as a record for posterity). If you doubt the license altogether, you can start a deletion request. czar 15:13, 14 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. The {{Licensereview}} tag was applied by an IP in response to my talk page comments from last January, and I'm not worried about the removal of the tag. I don't know enough about commons policies -- both deletion and licensing -- to feel comfortable nominating any image for deletion. I do feel that it defies common sense for an image to have a license stating that it is in the public domain "because it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1963..." when, in fact, the image (a company logo) didn't exist until 1977 (see, en:Apple_Inc.#Logo). But the fact that the displayed license is factually incorrect doesn't mean that there isn't a perfectly valid alternative license available. This is where my lack of knowledge about licensing on commons stops me from jumping right to deletion as the remedy for the problem. I note that other versions of the Apple logo have different license terms, and it may be the case that one of those is applicable to this image as well. (As before, it is best to ping upon reply as I'm more active on other projects.) Etamni  22:04, 14 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi Czar. Could you please do what you proposed? --Leyo 14:09, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

My suggestion was to keep them as is (separate) unless the older one is confirmed as incorrect. If so, I can merge the two to preserve attribution. czar 16:16, 16 September 2016 (UTC)

Hello

I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

Cheers,

Game developer uploading screenshots of their own game

Hi. How would it work if a game developer released and uploaded screenshots of their own game to Commons? This is assuming there's no external source with these images under a CC BY/CC BY-SA declaration. I assume they'd need to email OTRS, still. Anarchyte (work | talk) 02:05, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

@Anarchyte, as long as an uploader holds the copyright to the upload, the release is—in theory—valid, but the difficulties are in whether the anonymized uploader indeed is that rightsholder. If I were to upload my own drawings/renders, it's likely that no one would think of challenging them. But if I publish a game, and upload screenshots purporting to be the copyright holder, others will want confirmation that my online avatar does indeed represent the company releasing the assets. Best scenario in that case is to have the account associated with the game dev write into OTRS (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org) from an official company email confirming that a specific Commons account does indeed represent the company's capacity to license its works. czar 02:48, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
Okay, thanks! Anarchyte (work | talk) 03:15, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

Request

Hi Czar. Is it possible for you to delete these five files: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. I uploaded them because I was unaware of the fact that they had previously been uploaded to the Commons by another user. Is there any way to make sure that it won't happen again in the future? Keivan.fTalk 20:52, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

@Keivan.f, done! Best way to handle these: use toollabs:flickr2commons, which automates the whole process. When you manually uploaded, you used a lower res version than that was already uploaded to Commons. The upload system is set to detect when users try to upload duplicate images at identical resolutions. But if you use the Flickr tool, it will automatically fail if the image has already been uploaded. Happy editing, czar 13:05, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

question

hey nice to see you in person again... Saw your name on a logo that I was trying to source info from and I had a question because I think i messed up and not sure if this file: File:Black_Lunch_Table_logo.png should even be on wiki. I was kind of accidentally trigger happy with the Commons app and uploaded this without actually selecting the appropriate licenses. I was told there is a way to use company logos that may be trademarked on wiki since there is no other way to represent that. Is that delusional? Any advice on how I should proceed? Thanks! --Heathart (talk) 21:49, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

@Heathart, hiya! File:Black Lunch Table logo.png, I think, would qualify for {{Pd-simple}} (Commons:Threshold of originality#United States). But if it didn't, you'd need the copyright holder (whoever designed the logo, or the legal representative of BLT if the copyright was explicitly transferred there) to choose whichever Commons-compatible license they want (basically cc-by-sa or freer). Looks like you found the template for trademarked logos: {{Trademarked}}. Let me know if I can help? czar 23:51, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open!

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.

Dear Czar,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:32, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Merging duplicate images on Commons

Hi Czar! I had a question and went looking to find an experienced Commons user, and I find it quite convenient that you're an admin here, too :-)

File:The Execution of Mata Hari.jpg is a low-res cropped duplicate of File:The Execution of Mata Hari in 1917.jpg. Should the latter be moved to the former's name and replace it, leaving a redirect behind ("in 1917" seems superfluous)? Or should the former be turned into a redirect to the latter? Or should it be left alone? And what is the procedure for doing any of these options? Is there a help file that explains this? I couldn't find much help at Help:Redirect so I redirected myself here. :-) Thanks! Levivich (talk) 03:19, 3 March 2020 (UTC)

@Levivich, hiya! Closest help might be Commons:Duplicate. Commons has lots of cropped files, which are all fine as long as they still meet the Commons:Project scope and have an educational purpose. For instance, I'd check whether the cropped image's current usage is on purpose or whether it would be better to link to the larger image. If the crop is completely superseded by another version (i.e., no feasible reason to prefer the crop in question) then it's likely a candidate for deletion. In this case, based on my skim, the crop appears appropriate for the enwp caption, unless the reader would benefit from having the full frame (and tinier subject)? The title is less consequential—they can't have the same title so some extra words are used to disambiguate. Commons isn't very prescriptive about titles as long as the file name accurately describes the subject. And redirects on Commons are used rarely, usually in instances of exact duplicates to preserve any inbound links, but otherwise tolerant of different versions of an image as long as each provides some unique value. czar 14:14, 4 March 2020 (UTC)

admin help needed

Hi Czar/Archive 2

I would like like to post a question on one of the users talk-pages here, but before I do, I want to make sure this will not result in sanctions against me.

Even though my history says I have been a member on Commons since 2014, I don't remember ever registering that long ago. I know little about this wmf-wiki, except its reputation for being even worse than enwiki when it comes to dog-eat-dog (I hope I have not offended anyone by this comment). I can't afford to get in trouble on any more wmf-wikis, so I want to ask an admin a question about what content is acceptable to post on user pages before I go ahead and do it.

I was checking a link from my Wikimedia Commons Welcome (talk) 22:49, 3 November 2014 (UTC) and saw Commons:Administrators which lists all admins on Commons. First I satisfied myself there was no one on the list of admins with whom I have had a negative interaction elsewhere, and did not find anyone that I recognize as a problem. Since you are listed as an admin may I ask you a question about what is acceptable content on user-talk pages , and if not, where should I post my question?

I would like to assure you that I intend to be polite and friendly, as I always strive to be.

Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 16:40, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Ottawahitech, if I recall correctly, whenever a logged-in user visits a new WMF wiki, an account is established on that wiki. I don't know if that changed since the WP:SUL implementation so apologies if my understanding is outdated. For acceptable conduct on talk pages, see the Commons:Talk page guidelines. It's quite on par with enwp. For other questions, can get fast answers at either Commons:Administrators' noticeboard or the Commons:Village pump.
Also, for what it's worth, I haven't heard about Commons being more "dog eat dog" than enwp. If anything, contributing is more cut and dried here. Editors keep more to themselves. I'm not familiar with your enwp block but hopefully the change of scenery will provide enough for a clean break. Looking forward to your contributions and happy editing, czar 21:37, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Revdel?

Hey Czar, saw you're an admin on Commons too. Could you revdel the confederate flag that some idiot added as a version of File:Pro-Trump demonstration at the Texas Capitol Building on 6 January 2021.jpg? Not sure how to formally request it. AleatoryPonderings (talk) 15:54, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!

Dear Czar

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC

Hello Czar,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

De-adminship warning

This talk page in other languages:

Dear Czar. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights and also additional permissions (bureaucrat/oversighter/checkuser/interface-admin), if any, on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Aug-Sep 2021 before 13th September, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose their rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Thanks for the imports on Celeste

Hello,

First of all, I'd like to thank you for all the screenshots that you made available on Commons for the video game Celeste. They are currently being very helpful for my work on the French version of Wikipedia : fr:Celeste (jeu vidéo).

Moreover, I've seen that you similarly contacted the creators of Fez and that screenshots are also available for that game. May I know for how many games have you done something similar? Or generally who have you contacted (including those who haven't responded or said no) and by which methods? I'd like to work on different indie games in the future and having resources like that would prove very useful, so I might try to reach out to studios too.

Regards, --Charlestpt (talk) 08:36, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Thanks, @Charlestpt! Always nice to hear. I have a list of game assets I've uploaded here: Category:Video game files uploaded by czar. I haven't uploaded in a bit but when I used to do this, if an indie developer responded, they almost always said yes. I imagine it also helped when I was personally working on the article for their fledgling game. :) czar 14:11, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks again for the link to this category! What has been on your side the most effective way to contact indie creators? For instance, I'm trying to reach Lucas Pope, Eric Barone, Toby Fox, or Edmund McMillen (among others), but they do not all appear to be active on Twitter and I feel like a random mail could end up in a trash folder quite quickly. Regards, --Charlestpt (talk) 20:19, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
Most often I used a standard text that said I was interested in writing an article on the game, was looking for free use illustrations (explained what that meant), linked to my prior work (Fez is a great example), and asked if they would license their press kit in part or whole. You're best off not reaching out to auteurs like Pope or McMillen, especially via Twitter where I'm sure their DMs and @mentions are barraged with all kinds of weirdness. Most indie games use the Vlambeer Do Presskit, which has all of their assets and the email they prefer for press. Their press contact is either contracted out or someone on the small indie team, but it always goes quickly to the decision-maker responsible for copyright/licensing who can make the call. You'll likely have more traction when they're looking to promote a new game, as devs are not usually looking to give away assets for public use on their hit games. czar 15:07, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok, great insight on Vlambeer Do Presskit, I'll try to look out for this! I think I'll finish working on Celeste before contacting studios for other games in order to have an example too. Thanks again for all of this, I hope I'll be as effective as you in bringing new game screenshots to Commons! Regards, --Charlestpt (talk) 11:43, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
Hello,
Just as a heads up, I tried to contact the devs of Papers, Please, Cuphead, Hades and Ori and the Blind Forest a month ago to see if they can do some licence changes, but sadly I received no response: maybe I had bad luck!

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Ukrainian Archive Photos

Thanks for helping out with the Wikimedia Kotsur image. Just a side-note on my experience publishing archived photos from Ukraine and Russia. My publishers have never been concerned about the copyright on photos from the archives. These are university publishers, so I imagine they'd be fairly stringent with such issues. The only concern is if the picture is from a private family archive and has restricted use. UnknownVolin (talk) 22:16, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

I received a bit more information about the photo from Solodar (Kotsur's biographer). He says the copies of the photo (not the original itself, which is lost) are held by Kotsur's relatives. However, he says the photo has been duplicated many times and posting it on Wikipedia will not be a problem. What license should it go under? UnknownVolin (talk) 06:22, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Video game screenshots advice

Hey Czar. Firstly, thank you for all your work in getting all these great images released. So nice to see high-res pics for games where you can actually see things and everything isn't a blur because of a bot resizing things below 300px (an arbitrary and very outdated "standard" pushed by a minority, when an actual reasonable standard should have been based on legibility and modern screen resolutions, and would still have complied with minimal use for fair use while not harming copyright holders).

I didn't even know it was feasible at all to get creators to release anything under a free license. (I assumed they wouldn't understand it or consider it a threat) But inspired by your work, I realized it was possible and decided to try it out for w:Roadwarden.

I emailed the dev at the address listed on the press kit, asking them if they'd license the image under CC. They agreed, and I uploaded it. This is when I ran into a hitch: VRT would not accept me forwarding this email chain as proof "for legal reasons". Luckily, the dev was very receptive and agreed to use the release generator to send the permission themselves. In retrospect, with how generous and willing they were, I probably could have gotten them to license the entire press kit instead of that single screenshot, but I didn't want to be greedy.

As someone experienced in the area, I want to ask you the best way to approach things in the future. My approach, with me handling the uploading on Commons and reaching out to VRT was meant to make things as easy as possible for the creator—it's a notorious slog for outsiders to navigate the Wikimedia bureaucracies, and would easily turn them off from contributing. What's the best way to reduce friction, yet get VRT to accept the release as legitimate? Opencooper (talk) 18:13, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Opencooper, when VRT was OTRS, I used to have the developer copy the COM:CONSENT text and send directly to the email address while cc'ing me, rather than going through the relatively clunkier release generator. (Sometimes this meant that I wasn't cc'd, so it helped that I had OTRS access to add an internal note on the ticket.) It was straightforward that OTRS wanted to hear directly from the copyright holder rather than forwarded by me. I haven't attempted this in a bit so would be curious if that still works. czar 10:06, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
