Bridge renaming

Thanks for the reminder! The problem is that the list is so long and takes a while to compile. Here are just a few, the relevant subcategories of Category:Pony truss bridges.

Extended content

Nyttend (talk) 16:37, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Nyttend, I've moved some of the above but I wondered about whether a few of the others need the disambiguation in brackets e.g. could Category:Deer Creek Bridge, Spanning Deer Creek at Township Road 406, Geff, Wayne County, IL HAER‎ go to Category:Deer Creek Bridge and Category:Liberty Bridge, Spanning Smith Fork Creek on City Road, Liberty, De Kalb County, TN HAER to Category:Liberty Bridge (Tennessee)? If you think they are needed, I'll move them after you reply. Green Giant (talk) 00:22, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
And if you could also throw in Category:1359-1363 North Paulina Street (Apartment Buildings), Chicago, Cook County, IL HABS and its subcategories (just truncate to "Category:1363 North Paulina Street", "1359...", "1361...", and "1359-1363..."), for a few extras? The user creating most or all of these categories is Xnatedawgx, who has resisted my request to use reasonable names. Nyttend (talk) 16:40, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! You'll definitely see more of these coming; these are just a tiny group. And thanks for noticing the error with the Coldwater Bridge. As far as the disambiguation, I think (Place, State) should generally be followed. Reason: this is the convention normally used at en:wp by those of us who work with US historic sites (and we're the ones most often working with these HABS/HAER images), so when we create categories at Commons, we normally follow the same convention. Meanwhile, as far as the Deer Creek Bridge, we definitely have to disambiguate it somehow. The name's rather common; for example, someone not familiar with the history of Category:Wilson Bridge (Delphi, Indiana) would naturally call it the "Deer Creek Bridge", and another Deer Creek Bridge category will eventually have to be created for File:DEER CREEK BRIDGE WEST ELEVATION FACING EAST - Deer Creek Bridge, Spanning Deer Creek at East Side Highway, Longmire, Pierce County, WA HAER WASH,27-LONG.V,5-2.tif and a few related files. Nyttend (talk) 05:20, 31 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I've moved the remaining ones. Green Giant (talk) 10:29, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

And Category:James Bethel Gresham Memorial Bridge, Spanning Green Pond River at Kentucky Route 81, Calhoun, McLean County, KY HAER to Category:James Bethel Gresham Memorial Bridge? This one's even worse than normal, because it mangles the name of the Green River. Nyttend (talk) 02:37, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Magic Wand

I was wondering if you could wave your magic wand and take out approximately 7K images? Pursuant to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/2015/05/28, the uploader has added many thousand images and they are not properly licensed. I waved the wand for a lot in one or two of his categories, but it seems a hopeless task without better automation - and that made me think of you! Please help, or teach me how? Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:04, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

✓ Done with VFC - Ellin Beltz, I will write out the method as clearly as I can, hopefully by tomorrow. Green Giant (talk) 22:05, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi,

Please see ticket:2015063010008898. Not sure what to do with it. @-revi: could you take a look at this as well? Natuur12 (talk) 15:21, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Well, we'll just have to undelete all six thousand files and add the OTRS template. I'm not sure how long this might take without semi-automation or a bot. Green Giant (talk) 15:42, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

File:"Noos", Bea Richmond Park, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.jpg

Hi Green Giant!

I've asked this over at the OTRS message board, but I just want to double check with you (don't want to look like I'm excessively editing). Originally I had released the photo File:"Noos",_Bea_Richmond_Park,_Lincoln,_Nebraska,_USA.jpg under the cc-by-sa-4.0 license without GFDL... before I added the OTRS template. I added the GFDL license after the OTRS template because that's what the artist of the sculpture wanted for his sculpture... but afterwards, I discovered that I could have my own license for the photograph (sorry for being not-so-smart on this - this OTRS stuff is all new to me heh). So, I guess what I am asking... there should't be a problem if I took the GFDL license off of my photograph (not the artist's license for his work) to allow cc-by-sa-4.0 for the photo - what I originally had preferred - would there be???

Thanks much in advance! Hanyou23 (talk) 18:48, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Hanyou23 - the copyright holder of a work can release it under as many licenses as they wish. However, it is important for re-users that licenses should not be revoked, leaving them in a difficult legal position. Usually on Commons, we allow an uploader seven days "cooling off" after uploading, so they can ask for an uploaded file to be deleted. The same applies to changing the license, but I don't think we need to be harsh on you, because believe it or not, every grizzled oldbie was once a green-eared newbie, and we all had to learn things as we went along. So, you can remove the GFDL license because we can't expect you to know absolutely everything (yet!). Just bear it in mind for future uploads that you should observe the seven day limit. That said, you are free to change the license to a less-restrictive one at any time. I hope that helps. Green Giant (talk) 19:26, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
Green Giant - ah, thank you so much ^_^ !!! Hah, I tell 'ya, it's been quite the learning curve, but a very interesting as well-worth learning curve :D heh :p . Many thanks again :) (and for your kind words ^^ )!~ Hanyou23 (talk) 20:16, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Please check for a week. If nothing happens, kindly delete the file on the grounds of insufficient permission (if possible and if as per the guidelines). Pavanjandhyala (talk) 06:21, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
Pavanjandhyala, I've been checking each day and no reply yet. Perhaps you could send them another nudging email? By the way the file still has 10 days before it is due for deletion - do you want to wait the extra few days? Green Giant (talk) 14:22, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Do you want me to send a mail stating that only ten days are left and we require you to declare your consent by sending an e-mail from team@behindwoods.com to permissions-en@wikimedia.org? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 05:24, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
Yes, try to make it as polite as possible but with an emphasis that the file will be deleted if permission isn't received. Something like "unfortunately the image will be deleted from Wikimedia if you don't give us permission to use it", and maybe "Wikimedia only does this because we care about copyright and the author'a rights". Obviously if permission arrives after deletion, then we can restore it but hopefully they will be prompted into action. Green Giant (talk) 11:32, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
Will do it tonight. :) Pavanjandhyala (talk) 15:56, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi Green,

I have taken the time to fix this report (it needed adapting to the API change). I am not convinced that many admins have used it, perhaps it is not exciting enough? If you do find it useful, in the longer term you may have some thoughts on improving it, which I would welcome. For the moment I'm not planning on moving it to Labs, though that is not a practical disadvantage. Thanks -- (talk) 08:53, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Heya GG! I found another gallery on which I'd like a second opinion. INC used to do this with me, but of course is gone. Could you take a look at this and give opinion or take action, either way? Thank you. Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:31, 16 July 2015 (UTC)

Ellin, I've been busy on other wikis (sorting through potential Commons candidates), so I've not had a chance to go through this thoroughly. I have looked through a few, nominated one for deletion, and will look at more today and tomorrow. Sorry I'm not as quick about this as INC. Green Giant (talk) 13:32, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
Ellin Many images may be OK, but have no source, or the wrong license. As this user is active, you can simply ask him/her to fix that. My 2 Rs. ;o) Regards, Yann (talk) 13:42, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
My concern is the phrase on the user page " All photos, or they are almost made for me or the team of various projects in which I have worked, and since 1988, lead. All are absolutely free to be used by all".... almost made for me or the team... And yes, user is active, but I wanted second opinion on the various illustrations which don't seem to really be own work. Maybe he will reply to the one's/two's that were nominated and the dialog can begin. No worries on how long anything takes, I'm usually in super-slo-mode full time. IP block exempt

Hi,

16:20, 23 July 2015 Green Giant (talk | contribs | block) changed group membership for User:EChastain from (none) to IP block exempt (Temporary IP exemption to allow the user to edit their talk page)

Why you granted this? If talkpage access has been revoked, this does not help at all. Apart from that, we can unblock based on blockid if he is indeed affected by a autoblock of a possibly hardblocked ip. Best :-) --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:46, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for noticing. This was in response to a request on Meta. INC blocked the user on the same day as he quit, but after the request Billinghurst has changed the block allowing talk page access so the user can make an unblock request. They said they were unable to edit because the IP was blocked. So I felt it was only fair that they should get a chance to explain things. If this exemption is not used within a couple of days, I'll remove it myself. :) Green Giant (talk) 18:10, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
Autoblock itself does not affect talkpage. Except if a IP is hard blocked (maybe by a checkuser). IP block exempt is only for trusted users which are affected by autoblocks or the anti-tor extension. If you ask the affected user to give you the block id, we can look why he is affected. :-) (just my suggestion). --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:07, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Give Way at Roundabout sign.svg redirect

Hi Green Giant. I just want to let you know that I recreated File:Give Way at Roundabout sign.svg as a reciredt to File:Australia R1-3.svg because the redirect was still in use – on en.wikipedia at least, where I have reverted 29 cases of Filedelinkerbot removing images/information with the edit summary "unused redirect" (which was pretty infuriating before i took some deep breaths, calmed down, and undid the edits). I have no objection if you want to replace all the old uses with the new file name, and then delete the redirect when it really is unused. Thanks, Evad37 [talk] 01:02, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

Hello. When you use any website, you have to abide by the terms and conditions. This website (Wikimedia Commons) requires that all images uploaded here must be licensed by the copyright holder or be in the public domain. The images that you are referring to were deleted because the uploader claimed to have permission from the copyright holder(s). A promise was made to send an email to the Wikimedia email system with evidence of licensing. Such an email was not received but we cannot keep such images for more than a month. When the month was over, the files qualified for deletion. As far as this website is concerned, they were copyright violations until proven otherwise. To answer your question, the Wikimedia Commons community granted me (and about 250 other users) the authority to delete such files. See Commons:Administrators for the full list of such users. Green Giant (talk) 01:22, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Please undelete ...

Applicant for for deletion stated "The logo appears to be a quite recent creation", which is nonsense as the club expired in 1971. The Logo is Original 1930, Therefore more than 70 years old, which is threshold for audiovisual on Brazil.

Upload

I found a photographer who publishes some of his photos in his personal website under creative commons per the writing at the bottom of each page of his website. Can I upload the photos I need from his website? For example this website--Mbazri (talk) 10:58, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

@Mbazri: absolutely yes! Well done for finding this website! With no disrespect intended to the photographer, just be 100% sure that the photos don't appear anywhere else (use Google image search or Tin Eye). Once you've uploaded the files, make sure to ask for a {{License review}} for each file because you don't want to be in the position of having to justify files if the website goes down. I hope that helps. Green Giant (talk) 11:10, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick and comprehensive answer. As I understood by using license review tag, it's ensured that the photo is really licensed under a free license, am I right? By the way, do I have to ensure that the website owner knows what the creative commons license is? The question might seem funny, but I'm asking to get sure. Thanks.--Mbazri (talk) 06:34, 11 September 2015 (UTC)

Image was deleted, in spite of permission

Hi; I got a message on Wikipedia that you deleted an image I put here, "Loretta_Marron,_Jelly_Bean_Lady.jpg". The message says "it has been deleted from Commons by Green Giant because: OTRS: Unaccepted or insufficient permission for use on Commons: 35 days since last email. No response..)" I am puzzled by this because I thought I had met all the requirements. The picture in question was taken by a professional photographer who was employed by a magazine for this shoot. Both the photographer and the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine agreed that the copyright belong to the magazine, so I had the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine send the OTRS email. This was sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org on 28 September 2015. I thought that would be the end of it, and I did not hear anything further until today when I read that it had been deleted. Sorry if I am being obtuse, but can you please explain where I fell short of the requirements, so I can be sure the photo will "stick" next time? Gronk Oz (talk) 03:33, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Once the OTRS ticket is processed the file can be undeleted; you shouldn’t have to re-upload it. There are often backlogs of several weeks, but if the delay seems excessive you can follow up at COM:OTRS/N. For future reference, please note that adding {{OTRS pending}} to the description page after uploading will advise any would-be deleters that permissions have been sent.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:02, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479: thank you for the stalking :) Green Giant (talk) 07:56, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
I shouldn’t have missed the implication of the “35 days” above that there‘d been return communication to the rights-holders. It only occurred to me later, and you’d already followed up by the time I was back online.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:55, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the response, Odysseus1479. Is there any way I can tell when the OTRS has been processed? And when it is, can you point me to instructions for how to undelete the file? --Gronk Oz (talk) 10:18, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
Pinging @Trần Nguyễn Minh Huy: because they replied to the initial email. @Gronk Oz: it can't be processed until someone replies to the OTRS request for more information which was sent on 4 October. When they do reply and the permission is confirmed, then the OTRS volunteer will make the undeletion request. The best way to make this happen is if you ask Russell or Pacific Mags to reply to the OTRS email with the information that was requested. Ask them to keep you in the loop by putting your email address in the cc field of their emails. Green Giant (talk) 07:56, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
Ah, I was not aware there had been such a request. Given that it was so long ago, I can easily imagine that it may have slipped between the cracks of a big operation like the magazine. Can I ask that you send a copy of the query to me so that I can chase it up, please? Let me know if you need my email address; I was CCd on the original OTRS note from Louisa Hatfield (Editor-in-chief of New Idea Magazine). @Trần Nguyễn Minh Huy: , thanks for that. She is the copyright owner, and she is also very busy as editor-in-chief of several major magazines so I would be grateful if you would also send me a copy of the email so I can follow up with her. (Louisa CCd me on her original note, or let me know if you need my email address.) Or at least post it here so I am aware what the issue is.--Gronk Oz (talk) 03:15, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

@Trần Nguyễn Minh Huy: , I have not heard anything back about this. Is it possible to send a copy of your query to me, so I can chase it up? The person you sent your query to is the editor-in-chief of several major magazines, so it can be difficult to get her attention. If you could send a copy to me, I would be grateful.--Gronk Oz (talk) 00:34, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,

This is about a OTRS ticket that you invalidated in May 2015, after other OTRS members had validated it.

Let's recapitulate the previous episodes, with the help of the following links:

After episodes 2 and 3, I thought the matter was definitely settled, considering that, by then, the ticket had been validated by several OTRS agents, on both fr.wikipedia and Commons, and especially the clarification by the OTRS member who confirmed that "this was specified by a representative for [the architect Portzamparc], coming from the domain his site is hosted on." That sounded very clear.

But, four years later, you read it differently, you said the opposite and, as a consequence, the files were deleted (File:2001-2008 Société Générale tower, La Défense, Paris.jpg File:2001-2004 Headquarters for the press group Le Monde, Paris,.jpg). This is very puzzling. How is it possible that people read it so differently? Is it possible that you were not reading the same e-mail? Can you clarify, please? Thanks in advance, -- Asclepias (talk) 04:53, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

Asclepias, the files had already been deleted by Fastily (15 March 2015) and INeverCry (25 March 2015), so my opinion on 11 May 2015 had no bearing on whether they would be deleted. I didn't invalidate the ticket but here is my understanding of the matter (bearing in mind that I speak only basic French and that OTRS guidelines limit what can be revealed about tickets):
It appears there are two tickets, the one you mentioned above and ticket:2008012310016852 (from 23 January 2008) which relate to these and other images. In the January email, an OTRS volunteer replied in French to an email sent by the uploader to permissions-fr but there isn't a separate copy of that email and no information about when the uploader initially wrote to OTRS. The uploader asked about licences but did not specify any licenses nor list any files; these were listed by the OTRS agent, who explained about licensing and asked the uploader to select a licence. The email is followed by two internal notes: one by a different OTRS agent on 31 March 2008, which says only "cadeau"; the second is by the original agent on 1 April 2008 and says only "clos".
The second ticket (19 March 2008) contains 1 email and three internal notes. The uploader emailed the original OTRS agent (the one who wrote on 23 January), who has then forwarded this to OTRS (with the words "pour information"). The uploader writes that all the photos are to have the CC-BY-SA 2.0 FR recommended by the original OTRS agent. However it is the next paragraph which is of concern. Although OTRS requires confidentiality, I think it is better to relay this in French, "Comme convenu, j'ai l'accord des photographes pour la distribution sur Wikipedia de toutes ces photos." I may have misread that but it sounds like there is more than one photographer and that the uploader says they agree to distribute the photos on Wikipedia. If the uploader is not the photographer then I think it is preferable that the individual photographers contact OTRS directly, even if all they say is "yes, the uploader has made me aware". I'm not sure whether the uploader understood that files are not released solely for Wikipedia but for everyone worldwide. The first internal note (28 March 2008) is by the original agent, stating the ticket is closed (and presumably the license has been added to the relevant files). The second (29 June 2009) is from another agent, pointing out that the architect has not issued a licence for a particular file (File:2001-2004 Headquarters for the press group Le Monde, Paris,.jpg). The third note (21 September 2011) is from a third agent who wrote "erreur de ma part".
I am happy to stand corrected but I feel certain that the files were not licenced properly by either the photographers or the architect. It is understandable to say that the original email was from the website of the architect but at no point did the architect license his work nor was there any evidence the photographers had licensed their work. All we have is a forwarded email from someone who no longer works there. I am of the opinion that in such scenarios it is better to have direct confirmation from the copyright holder, however inconvenient, rather than an employee who might not fully understand what is being released. I hope that clarifies my opinion. Green Giant (talk) 01:25, 14 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Green Giant! I hope you are well... I think you may have deleted this file by mistake (alternatively, please let me know where my analysis went wrong!). All the best, Storkk (talk) 09:55, 17 April 2016 (UTC)

@Storkk: thanks for letting me know. I've restored the file. I think I selected it by mistake in VFC. Cheers. Green Giant (talk) 11:34, 17 April 2016 (UTC)

Mass deletion request

Hello, Green Giant, thanks for the suppression of a photo published by User:Vent des Forêts User talk:Vent des Forêts, see HERE. For the same raison, almost all uploads of this user are without suitable licence of the artist and/or of the photographer. I don't know how to give form to a mass deletion request grouped in one. Can you make on my demand such a mass deletion request? Greetings. --Havang(nl) (talk) 08:49, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Hello @Havang(nl): I would recommend using Visual File Change for mass nominations. I've created the DR at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Vent des Forêts. Feel free to add an opinion there. The only one I didn't nominate was the one-letter logo because it is too simple. Cheers. Green Giant (talk) 09:22, 24 April 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. --Havang(nl) (talk) 11:03, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Icon

Hi, Green Giant! Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know that such icon exist. Keep up the good work! Have a nice day. ShanksofWessex (talk) 02:56, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

Beata Szydlo

Hello! You decided to keep File:Beata Szydło - Hungary 2016-02-08 (04).jpg following a nomination for deletion. Could you restore File:Beata Szydło - Hungary 2016-02-08 (11).jpg too? It had same lincese and author (Chancellery itself). --Norden1990 (talk) 15:42, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

@Norden1990: - I've realised that I closed it wrongly. The PD-mark they use on Flickr is apparently not the same as CC-0, which has legal effect. I'm going to delete the file. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Green Giant (talk) 16:34, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
Pffff..... no comment. --Norden1990 (talk) 16:46, 29 April 2016 (UTC)

Can you please restore this photo?

Hello, Admin! Haven't seen you for so long on Wikinews. I was wondering if you could restore this photo File:Barnstar-printedition.jpg that was deleted by User:Polarlys. That photo used for awarding the wikinewsies. It is still there on their user pages. But only a nasty red link appears. It would be great to have their userpages how it used to be.

Deleted: per nomination

Just fyi, you closed Commons:Deletion requests/File:Maddie sia.jpg earlier, but haven't deleted it yet. TherasTaneel (talk) 12:36, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

@TherasTaneel: thank you for pointing it out. I'm not sure why I didn't delete it at the time. Green Giant (talk) 12:42, 20 May 2016 (UTC)
