File:The Defence of Duffer's Drift prologue. The book is attributed to a Lieutenant N. Backsight Forethought, otherwise known as Major General Sir Ernest Dunlop Swinton..jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Right, we must delete it at once. The book's cover File:The Defence of Duffer's Drift cover.jpg must be moved to Wikipedia where I will write a fair-use rationale for it, I have already reduced it to a thumbnail for this purpose. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:18, 1 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it's PD-US as it was published outside the USA before 1917, so it can go to Wikipedia at full size without further rationale. Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:07, 7 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 15:55, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

1) "Predicate" is not really a linguistic constituent label like the others in the diagram. It's more a sentence role than a level of structure. 2) In any case, "Verb Phrase" and "Predicate" are competing and incompatible -- if you used one, you should have left off the other. 3) Your changed version of the file messed up some diagonal lines elsewhere in the image. 4) I would appreciate it if you would upload any future revised version as a separate file under a new name... AnonMoos (talk) 10:18, 14 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your reply. You have a point about VP vs Predicate, I have no idea why VP was marked as part of the top-level item, I'd say that was clearly wrong (what does "Sentence / Verb phrase" mean, actually? Clearly that muddles together the top two nodes) and I'll remove it - better, move it as a more helpful label, "Predicate / Verb Phrase". As for saying it's nor really a label, I'll just note that it is commonly used, and clearly belongs with the node I placed it at - what else would one label that node, I wonder? I don't really agree with the "messed up" bit - I had to replace the old ones as they were not possible to ungroup, and I don't at all see why there should be two separate versions, given the now two deficiencies in the old one, but I'll certainly upload one with another name to avoid a pointless edit-war complete with 'appreciative' remarks. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:26, 14 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It could be considered a flaw -- or at least a loose informality -- that the "Verb Phrase" label in my version of the diagram is moved up, and not where it technically should be at the unlabelled branching. However, your "solution" unfortunately created more problems than it solved. It might have been nice if you had raised the matter on my user talk page before overwriting the file... AnonMoos (talk) 15:08, 14 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If File:Principle of Yehudi Lights with Avenger head-on view.jpg was too dark to distinguish the plane from the background, you probably need to calibrate your monitor black levels: see here. The contrast is clear enough for my calibrated setup. I carefully prepared the image so that the Yehudi light version became more difficult to see, both due to brightness, and by not taking up so much of the field of view. If, after calibrating, you don't want to revert, please consider using more of a border - the aircraft wouldn't fill a binocular field of view at the range this method of camouflage is effective at. Hohum (talk) 17:10, 11 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think we're missing a point here. The diagram is not a simulation of a binocular view, nor yet of a 120-degree sector of rather-dark horizon to scan from a submarine conning tower; nor is there anything wrong with any of the monitors I have used since I designed the image. Instead, the range of greys is chosen to work on typical displays with settings that vary from excellent to dodgy. Therefore, it offers quite strong contrasts and the uncamouflaged image in particular is designed to be easy to see. The camouflaged image is by intention still visible, but the viewer can realize that the brighter spots could average out with the darker regions of the aircraft to reduce recognisability substantially. As for more of a border, the working area of the image is chosen to be as large as possible because on many displays (ok, think smartphone) the information has to be presented in a little postage-stamp image area, and having much of a border would leave a substantial region of uninformative background. The idea of a simulation is a good one; my pair of images could be made to 'fly' closer, looming larger from a pinpoint to a substantial size, in a short video, either one after the other or (as in the static image) both at once. I'd encourage you to make one, with border and even a 'binocular' cutout; but I'd not wish to do that within the confines of a static image. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:22, 11 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It seems I took your revert comment too literally. Hohum (talk) 18:03, 13 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed four typos in File:Wasps are Paraphyletic.svg. If you would, please review the changes as they are based on your original work. I will notify you on the English wikipedia as well as CheChe who uploaded the svg. —DIYeditor (talk) 22:47, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DIYeditor You have restored the .SVG file to the spellings that I used in the .PNG file, in other words they weren't my typos. Chiswick Chap (talk) 22:50, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, yes, that's what I meant. CheChe introduced a number of typos. I intended to notify you and raise the issue with him. —DIYeditor (talk) 22:58, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Mind you, all we need to do with typos (unless someone is creating thousands of them) is to lay them to rest, life's too short for worrying who made a slip. Chiswick Chap (talk) 23:05, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
File:Whales are Paraphyletic.svg also included one typo. Just thought you would like to know since you created the original PNG. Perhaps an overreaction but I was a bit alarmed at the number of mistakes and thought I should mention it. —DIYeditor (talk) 23:31, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Un grazie per WLM e un libro sulla conoscenza libera per te[edit]

Wikimedia Italia
Wikimedia Italia

Gentile Chiswick Chap,

Grazie ancora e a presto,

Lorenzo Losa (msg) 10:29, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I really like the coloring, but you resized the image down 75%. A previous couple of edits did something similar, but got reverted due to shrinkage. Could you recreate @ full size? TSamuel (talk) 17:36, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much! I'm doing some further work with your latest version to decrease filesize, & will upload that when done. TSamuel (talk) 20:34, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Compression is only a good idea if quality is not affected. Chiswick Chap (talk) 03:39, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, you're correct. If you (or, for that matter, anyone) doesn't like my update, feel free to revert. TSamuel (talk) 03:42, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Study shows Wiki Love Africa recruitment makes a difference[edit]

Hello Chiswick Chap

We are writing because you have participated in the Wiki Loves Africa (WLA) photo competition in the past. Results have been published and winning pictures may be seen here !

This year WLA partnered with the research organization CAT Lab (previously CivilServant) to help us evaluate the effectiveness of one of our recruitment efforts. You may or may not have received a message on your user talk page encouraging you to participate again in this year's competition.

We are excited to share with you their study found our recruitment message was a success and may have resulted in as many as 2,000 additional contributed photos. We hope you agree this is great news for Africa and its representation across Wikimedia. You can read more about the study and the results in this blog post.

If you have any questions about the study, we encourage you to ask CAT Lab's research manager Juliakamin(cs).

Sketch map of Middle Earth (Lord of the Rings)[edit]

Hello @Chiswick Chap: ,

I just stumbled on your graphic of the Middle Earth map and I want to ask if you would be able to create a graphic of this map as well. It shows the world of a fantasy light novel series called Mushoku Tensei. I'd like to write something about the world at German Wikipedia in the main article and I thought a map would be helpful as well. Can you help me out? Have a nice day! :-) --Goroth (talk) 21:09, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, and thanks for asking. The link didn't work but I googled it; the map is quite complex, and the topic beyond my ken. However, I simply used Inkscape for the drawing, it's not hard to use, and it's actually free. You can download it at https://inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0.2/ and have a go; the .SVG file format is its usual output. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:44, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Something interesting (perhaps)[edit]

The "holy tree of Bostam" illustrating Marco Polo's book
A locally famous sole tree near Abarsij, Bastam District, Greater Khorasan, Iran

I saw you have been editing the article "Dry Tree," so you may find this interesting: today I found this old illustration (left image) and to placed it into a proper administrative unit, and after I did, in the same district I've found a locally famous sole tree (right image) which fits the book's description and a historical route. As I can see in few Persian sources, no one has yet linked it. Therefore, thanks to Commons, perhaps the old mystery tree is finally identified. :) --Orijentolog (talk) 18:03, 2 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
