Empty category

Is there something I am missing, or is an empty category still a deletable thing on Commons? Sannita - not just another it.wiki sysop 22:29, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

@Sannita: Please reread the criteria, it is not solely empty.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:30, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
I give up, then. Sannita - not just another it.wiki sysop 22:33, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
@Sannita:

C2. Unuseful empty category
If a category is empty and is obviously unusable, unlikely to be ever meaningfully used, it may be speedily deleted. Don't apply if the page is marked with an explanation of why it should be kept or if the deletion can be controversial, the category was recently unconsensually emptied, etc. Consider redirecting or renaming the category rather than deleting it.

With the emphasis on unuseful. If it is WD linked, there needs to be an explanation of why it is unuseful more than just empty. Otherwise it should be a quick RfD  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:39, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

PDF and djvu for identical source

Every time I use the template {{Other versions}}, other administrators deleted it or marked it as a duplicate, now you tell me the opposite, so if I pay attention to you, and then they delete it, as a duplicate or worse version, that in reality, the pdf is a version with lower resolution than djvu. So the administrators agree what they want to do with this. Very file are deleted in similar situations Thanks Shooke (Talk me in spanish, english or italian) 00:24, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

Deleting files from faktaoklimatu.cz

@Billinghurst - Hi, maybe I uderstand somethig wrong, but I really do not know, why at least two files from source faktaoklimatu.cz were deleted due to Copyvio. Files are licenced under CC-BY 4.0 licence as it is written directly in the image and once again on the portal faktaoklimatu.cz Jirka Dl (talk) 13:12, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

Jirka Dl which files? I process many files in multiple queues, so identifying the files of concern would help. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:59, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
@Billinghurst - problem was with files Fit-for-55.svg and Emise-cr-detail.svg, but it is already solved, Herbythyme already undeleted both files - it was missunderstanding. Thank you. Jirka Dl (talk) 13:21, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Copyright violations from kathrynkates.com

Could you explain why the two files you recently reverted my CSD on are not copyright violations? As far as I can tell, the content on http://www.kathrynkates.com/ is not freely licensed. Appreciate any explanation. ––FormalDude (talk) 21:53, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

@FormalDude: If you want to state that a long-held file is a copyright violation, then you need to present the evidence that it is copyright violation, as is explained in the deletion policy. Someone just saying so, doesn't make it so. That a file is at a site and here doesn't make it CV, especially when it was uploaded in 2014 with the history that it has for me to speedy delete it. You will also note that in the explanation it says if you disagree then take it through a DR which is a review of the community.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:18, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Hello, why isn't Profile01_Suchatvee02.png a copyright violation? I have already provided a website where the exact image can be found, and there doesn't seem to be any information about the file's licensing, so I think it's probably copyrighted. Thanks. --- ILikelargeFries (talk) 10:08, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

@ILikelargeFries: It doesn't qualify for speedy as someone is taking it through a DR.  — billinghurst sDrewth 10:33, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi, why did you revert my edit? Removing the redirect is so I can load a new image with that title. Both the redirect and redirected page will have their versions modified. Marquinhos talk 14:02, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

@Marcos Elias de Oliveira Júnior: Please would you think about why it may be that I removed your request. Create a new file name for a new image, you should not be reusing an existing name.  — billinghurst sDrewth 09:09, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
File:BSicon tINTa.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Help review possible copyright violation images

Hi, I am reaching out to you asking for your help to review (and possibly take action) files uploaded by this user. I've noticed that he/she has uploaded hundreds of pictures of churches in Indonesia and most of them are used on the Indonesian Wiki. After some random checks, I've noticed that there are many photos uploaded not by his own work but rather a screenshot from Google Street View (some evidence listed below).

Also, all of the photos uploaded have no Metadata though he claims that all of the uploaded files are his own work. I suppose those images are derivative works and fall under possible copyright violation, if my claims are correct please kindly help to remove them. Thanks in advance. Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

File:183 - ζ1-2I - D24 (Bd Charm-50).svg has been deleted

Hi

Could you explain me why this file has been deleted : File: 183 - ζ1-2I - D24 (Bd Charm-50).svg ?

I know that it was a dupplicated file one this one: File:181 - ζ1 - D24 (Bd Charm-50).svg and so a redirection has been done so that this file name can continue to be used in Wikipedia (have a look of the section "Geology" of this page in WP-fr and expand the paragraph "Légende de la carte géologique."). Now there is red link.

I mention @Túrelio: with whom I had a discussion about these type of files (here: "Duplicated SVG files representing patterns and colors of geological formations of french departments"). The discussion could help you understand the purposes of these files and why some are dupplicates.

--Poudou99 (talk) 20:25, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

@Poudou99: It is deleted as it is duplicate per the policy.

After that I have to challenge that a coloured swatch as a svg uploaded one for one is truly not a good idea for what you are doing, then one for every variation on a map that you need. Is that truly the best technological approach to take? Especially considering that we have templates, we have modules, coding and we have wikidata , etc. and you tell me that the brute force is the way that you settled upon. If you want a redirect, then feel free to create one, however, every step that you take on your approach should be help up for legitimate challenge as an ugly approach. Use wikidata, have the colour assigned through data fields, get some assistance for a smart way to do what you are trying to achieve.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:01, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi
The problem is not the colors of the geological layers defined by the French geology institution (aka BRGM). The issues are the patterns added on the colors ; some examples :
These patterns are SVG files that I retrieve from the BRGM Open Data database and to which I add the colors. Here is an example of maps with patterns on the various geological layers.
The small SVG files that I have built are used in the geologic map legends in the geology section in WP-fr pages for a french communes where those maps are added [1].
Honestly, I didn't think that my method for building geologic map legends could be considered as brutal ( brute force). I am very sadness by this judgment and I apologize to the Commons community. I feel as I acted like a vandal. It was not my intention. And I never have such behavor since 2007.
I don't know what I can do now to solve this patterns representation problem on the layers. I absolutely have to find a solution because it concerns nearly a thousand pages in WP-fr
I thought that the solution of replacing duplicate files by redirections was the good solution. It seems not. But I don't see how I can do that with Wikidata.
I'm sorry to have bored you with this topic. --Poudou99 (talk) 07:36, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

I have an idea to try to solve this problem of duplicate files and considered as not "compliant" with Commons rules.

Rather than generating a single SVG file for each geologic layer in a department (which can cause duplicate files), I could generate the different original pattern-color files and then create redirections for each layer.

For example : file name "S01_003 #FF0000-315.svg" (pattern: S01_003, color: #FF0000, rotation angle: 315°) and then have a redirecton file "011 - Ec - D38 (Bd Charm-50).svg" to this pattern file.

I have to say that will be a little complicated on my side. Because the BRGM Open Data gives information for each layer (pattern + color) and not the list of all possible patterns. I will have to do a reverse build operation (a kind od Reverse engineering). Could this be suitable? if so, I certainly will need assistance for the creation of the redirections and deletion of existing files.--Poudou99 (talk) 10:18, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

@Poudou99: I think that there are way more competent people in the space of images and tying wikidata to things, eg. @Mike Peel and Tagishsimon: make the WD spin and twirl play better crosswiki and hope can offer some good advice; I am just an humble admin here, doing admin tasks. To note that the duplicate process is just deleting the underlying image and history and creating a redirect, so creating redirects as a starting point for a file with a different name is dead easy => Commons:Redirect  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:37, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you Billinghurst, I will contact the people you mention (@Mike Peel: or @Tagishsimon: )
WD is something I am not comfortable with.
I hope they could have ideas to create these patterns/colors in WD and associate them to the geological map legends in WP-fr, and that without creating those SVG files in Commons. --Poudou99 (talk) 16:51, 22 August 2022 (UTC)
I replied with some suggestions at User_talk:Mike_Peel#Is_there_a_feature_in_WD_that_allows_storage_of_small_icons_representing_patterns_and_colors_of_used_on_french_geological_maps.. Probably creating redirects is the simplest approach to use given the current situation, though. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:22, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi billinghurst
If you agree I will recreate the redirection files that have been deleted
Is there a tool that I can use to delete dupplicates file and create redirections instead? --Poudou99 (talk) 21:56, 24 August 2022 (UTC)

Permission to upload an audio file

@Billinghurst: I wanted to upload an audio file of a historical speech of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1948 but I didn’t know that uploading audio file was restricted. Can I get the permission to upload the file. I believe it is under public domain of Pakistan and 74 years already passed after the speech. I collected the audio from a website that uploaded by a person who collected the audio from Radio Pakistan. Mehediabedin (talk) 01:27, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

@Mehediabedin: Com:VPC is the place to discuss.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:25, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

The file is eligible for speedy deletion under the F10 criterion as the user has no constructive global contributions as seen here: https://guc.toolforge.org/?by=date&user=Kunal+peter

Its only use has been on vanity pages the user has created for himself on the English and Indonesian Wikipedias. Uhai (talk) 23:48, 2 October 2022 (UTC)

@Uhai: Administrators should not be deleting files that are potentially legitimately in use in other wikis through speedy deletion. We are not the arbiters of that use, and usage on a user: ns page is considered legitimate use. Resolving the issue at the wiki of use is the priority, and then we manage it here.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:48, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
