Fixing Cigoli

Thank you so much for fixing the categorization of paintings by Cigoli and other painters! If you can, I suggest you a similar painter that would need that help too Category:Jacopo Chimenti. Thank you! --Sailko (talk) 09:17, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

@Sailko: Sure, I'll take a look at that one. Thanks for the suggestion! -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:37, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi there! May I ask what you mean exactly with this diff? A gallery page it is ... Greetz, --Mateus2019 (talk) 18:22, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

@Mateus2019: Sure, thanks for asking. The note at the top of Category:Gallery pages has some explanation. That category is not for individual galleries. It is for categories that group galleries by various criteria. Including individual galleries could make the category too big to be useful. If anyone wants to see a list of all galleries, they can look at Special:AllPages.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you'd like more info. -- Auntof6 (talk) 18:30, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
... Me again >> thanks for your reply, but I am missing an answer about why it is not considered as a gallery page in your opinion? I appreciate your edits in general BTW & N8i, --Mateus2019 (talk)
@Mateus2019: Yes, Concept map is a gallery page. I made that change because Category:Gallery pages, counterintuitively, is not supposed to contain individual gallery pages. (The exception is Gallery pages itself, which is sort of a meta gallery page.) --Auntof6 (talk) 18:48, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for correcting my error. But: how can be tagged a category that should only contain other categories, when it's not a metacat? I could not find out, may be you know -- sarang사랑 06:46, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi, @Sarang. There are a couple of ways to do that. If the category should contain absolutely no files, only categories, you can tag it with {{CatCat}}.
But I see that this category has a lot of files in it, so maybe that isn't the answer. If a category should contain as few files as possible, but might sometimes have files, you can tag it with {{Categorise}}. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:15, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, CatCat is exactly what I was looking for. All the files currently appearing in the category will vanish in the next days (or weeks) when the new templates become active - they are automatically categorized there, and will automatically recategorized elsewhere. -- sarang사랑 12:21, 5 May 2023 (UTC)

@Sarang: Glad I could help! -- Auntof6 (talk) 12:44, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
Category discussion warning

Veils (clothing) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

JopkeB (talk) 07:38, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Do not replace this category by Category:1 person. This is completely useless, and these files are out of scope on Commons. Thanks, Yann (talk) 18:07, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

@Yann: OK, sorry. I don't understand these, so I'll just leave them alone. I looked at it because it's set up as disambiguation (even though it doesn't list any disambiguating categories), and it has entries. -- Auntof6 (talk) 00:02, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

Your deletion

Hi Auntof6. I note that you deleted [[:Category:Industry by country|Wales]] here within minutes of my edit, giving no reasons as to why it was deleted. How was my edit spotted? Why did you remove it? Thanks! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 09:17, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

@Llywelyn2000: It was deleted because Commons does not class Wales as a country. I know that's arguable, but Commons needs to treat it one way or the other, and it treats it as a subentity (constituent country) of the UK.
As for how I came to see that category, there had been a discussion of "Is Wales a country or is it not?" somewhere (I don't remember where right now), and I must have seen this category when I was looking at some Wales-related categories. I might not have noticed that the category had just been added.
By the way, I've been to Wales, and I thought it was beautiful! It reminded me of the rural area in Pennsylvania where I grew up, where I think some of the place names are even Welsh. -- Auntof6 (talk) 11:01, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Button-down shirts

Hi Auntof6, I noticed your edits where you moved numerous files out of the "button-down shirts" tree, as you did here. I think I understand why this was done, but now these files have been completely removed from the Category:Buttons (clothing) tree. How can this be resolved? plicit 02:03, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

@Explicit: First, to explain what I did: I found many images in button-down shirt categories that didn't actually show button-down shirts, and I moved them to more appropriate shirt categories. (Button-down shirts have buttons to secure the points of the collar -- this image shows a good example.) Most of the images I saw showed shirts with buttons, but not actual button-down shirts. It looked like at least one editor mistakenly thought that a button-down shirt was any shirt with buttons. It doesn't help that dress shirts, which usually have buttons, are also called "button shirt, button-front, button-front shirt, or button-up shirt" (quoting en:Dress shirt), but not "button-down". So I moved selected files from button-down shirt categories to other shirt categories. There are probably more I need to look at.
Maybe the fact that these images are no longer under buttons doesn't need to be resolved. Not all clothing with buttons is in that tree. That isn't to say that the situation couldn't be improved, as opposed to resolved. I was thinking that dress shirts could be put under buttoned shirts, but then I saw that they can be fastened with studs rather than buttons. I was also thinking that polo shirts could be put there, but they didn't always have buttons. (That's all according to English Wikipedia.) Would we want to subcategorize those types of shirts to separate the ones with buttons from the ones without?
What do you think? And by the way, thanks for helping further my education into the world of clothing details! -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:36, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
I created Category:Buttoned shirts as a broader category to encompass shirts with buttons that aren't necessarily formal, so Category:Aloha shirts can be categorized there, for example. Maybe making Category:Button-down shirts a subcategory of both the new category and Category:Dress shirts might make things work? I would assume button-downs are only (or mostly) fastened by buttons.
Regarding shirts with studs instead of buttons, we do have Category:Shirt studs, so creating a subcategory for this type of shirt specifically could do the trick. So we would have,
Category:Shirts (cat)
Category:Buttoned shirts (subcat)
Category:Button-down shirts (subsubcat)
Category:Dress shirts (subcat)
Category:Button-down shirts (subsubcat)
Category:Studded shirts (subsubcat)
Category:Shirt studs (cat)
Category:Studded shirts (subcat)
The issue with the last category tile is that it's a bit ambiguous. It could include, say, a T-shirt with decorative studs sewn onto the chest area.
I did a quick Google search and found that both "stud button(s)" and "button stud(s)" are terms that are also in use. If we take that into consideration, then the category scheme can be altered:
Category:Shirts (cat)
Category:Buttoned shirts (subcat)
Category:Button-down shirts (subsubcat)
Category:Stud buttoned shirts (subsubcat)
Category:Dress shirts (subcat)
Category:Button-down shirts (subsubcat)
Category:Stud buttoned shirts (subsubcat)
Category:Shirt studs (cat)
Category:Stud buttoned shirts (subcat)
I think something like this can both address both my concern about the files being placed in the "buttons" category tree, your concern regarding dress shirts with studs instead of buttons, and it provides concision about the category's contents. The categories will need descriptions to distinguish one from one another, but it just might work. I hope this all makes sense. plicit 11:24, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
@Explicit: I need to take some time to look at this. I'll get back to you. -- Auntof6 (talk) 11:39, 6 July 2023 (UTC)

About your edit request on Template talk:Topic of country

Thanks for your edit request on Template talk:Topic of country for changing the "diffuseat" parameter. I did not know it works this way. I'll make a note in the CFD. JopkeB (talk) 04:49, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

@JopkeB: You're welcome. There are still the other tasks for that CFD marked as assigned to Joshbaumgartner, such as the one to replace {{CatDiffuse}}. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:26, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I know, but it turns out that I have misinterpreted his contribution, he is not someone who makes bots, so I have to invent other solutions and remove his name from the assigned tasks. It is on my to-do list. JopkeB (talk) 08:34, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
I'd love to be that skilled, but unfortunately templates and a few .js tweaks are about as far as my old brain will carry me. That said, I have gone ahead and made the requested edit to {{Topic of country}}. If there are any others requiring similar attention, let me know. Josh (talk) 22:50, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
@JopkeB @Joshbaumgartner: Also, I see that there are 1,733 categories using {{Diffusion by condition}} with a count of 50 specified. Those should be changed as well, best by just removing the count parameter altogether. An example is Category:Archaeologists from Ukraine. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:04, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
In the case of Archaeologists from Ukraine, the '50' has been added at the category level directly. I think we still want to allow editors to set specific limits for individual categories vs. forcing a mandated number on all categories no matter what. It has been a bit since I dug into that discussion, but my recollection is that we wanted to reset the defaults to 200, but still allow other numbers to be selected. I could have misread things though, @JopkeB might know better. I'm not sure I am really clear on exactly why having 50 instead of 200 is a problem...clogging the maintenance categories maybe? Josh (talk) 03:19, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
Fair point. It clogs the categories, yes, but also, 50 just seems too low. However, I guess that wasn't the point of the CFD. Some categories are just going to have a lot of files because there's no good way of diffusing them. For example, I'm working on diffusing Category:Men with beards, but there are still thousands of files in it. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:33, 29 September 2023 (UTC)
I agree with Josh, he wrote in the discussion: "Obviously, there are a lot of categories where 200 is too high a number, but those can be set by users in those topics as needed." and I agree, this was not an issue. So my suggestion is to leave {{Diffusion by condition}} as it is. JopkeB (talk) 04:33, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello, trying to help with cleanup in that category I think the majority of the cases is caused by instances of {{Creator}} giving Dutch rather than English keywords for the creators' occupation from a GWToolset Batch Upload of Rijksmuseum Amsterdam objects (?) of yours. I'd be very happy if we could find a way to clean this up. Do you have any ideas? Thanks in advance, --Marsupium (talk) 17:43, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

@Marsupium: I've never done a batch upload of anything. However, I just looked at:
  1. this file, which has the error
  2. this file, which does not have the error
The difference I see is that the first one includes the nationality and occupation templates in the artist parameter. Maybe those shouldn't be specified with this kind of artist. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:49, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
