Nuvola images[edit]

Hi Alphax. It appears that Image:Nuvola 64 apps x.png, Image:Nuvola 64 apps xapp.png, and Image:Nuvola 64 apps xconfig.png, which you uploaded, are all the same. Any preference on which title to keep? dbenbenn | talk 23:26, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Also, instead of uploading the 64px versions, could you upload the 128px ones? The Commons generally wants the largest possible images. See Image:Nuvola 64 apps kcontrol.png, which I tagged as redundant. dbenbenn | talk 01:10, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, I hadn't thought about it much... I originally went by a suggestion that en:User:ClockworkSoul made on w:en:, but yes, I can upload the 128 versions. If possible, I guess we can omit the image sizes from the filenames too. Alphax 14:41, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'm uploading the 128 versions using Wikimedia Commonplace - Feel free to go and delete the 64x64 versions after I'm done, and then we can worry about duplicates :-) Thanks, Alphax 17:05, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I'd like to find out more about Nuvola this weekend. In particular, does the author have vector files for the icons? (Eventually we'll be able to upload resolution-independent SVG files.)
About the duplicates: perhaps it makes sense to keep them, with a note like "See also Foo and Bar, which are the same image but separate files in Nuvola." dbenbenn | talk 19:52, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I just checked - SVG versions are not available (well, the WMF might be able to buy them or something, since they are LGPL)... if image redirects work, that would also be an acceptable solution, with the most obvious (ie descriptive) name retaining the actual image. Alphax 23:55, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, the 128 versions of the apps set are uploaded... unfortunately, the 64 versions of quite a few are in use on fr:Accueil (and elsewhere). Time to start notifying and removing. Alphax 04:15, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

hi, this image derived from Image:Nuvola apps filetypes.png but it is modified in order to make it red and render a good contrast with the background color in the main page...this version is not in fact present on commons. User:Rosco 12:06, 7 October 2005 (UTC) Sorry, I'm not logged ^__^[reply]

Why did you remove the translations from this template? Alphax (sysop) 11:33, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The template should not be 10 pages long because of translations. There can be a diffent Category for Category:Redundant in differnt languages. But what are you trying to do with the template? --Paddy 13:31, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, {{deleted duplicate}} is, it helps people on non-English speaking projects know not to use images which are about to be deleted. Alphax (sysop) 01:01, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nuvola on fr[edit]

Hi! Is there a way to get the list of the :fr pages that contain the 64px Nuvola icons ? It would be really useful if Commons added some system to track down inclusions among all wikis. Dake 12:01, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

by the way, as you are admin, maybe you can fix an issue with the french translation on Commons. On http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Upload?uselang=fr - one can read "source filename", "destination filename", "summary", "licensing", while the rest of the page is in french. Could it be possible to fix that ? The correct version would be : "nom du fichier à envoyer", "nom d'enregistrement du fichier", "résumé", "licence". Thanks if you can help. Dake 12:18, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I launched my bot on :fr and I guess I removed most if not all links to the 64px versions. Dake 17:41, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nuvola icons in SVG[edit]

Guess what: the Nuvola icons are now available in SVG! Compare 128px|SVG version128px|PNG version. They're in the GNOME Themes Extras package, available from [1]. User:dbenbenn 16:11, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alphax, I just noticed this image. I couldn't find a notice anywhere on the website that said it was GPL (in fact, the only notice I could find was a copyright statement at the bottom - "all rights reserved"). Just wondering if you could clear that up, and either delete the image (as you're an admin :)) or make clearer its claim to a free license. cheers, pfctdayelise 15:09, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks![edit]

Image deletion warning Image:Nuvola apps opera.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Commons-l subscription[edit]

Hello Alphax/Archive01,

as per Commons talk:Administrators, I am asking all admins to subscribe to commons-l, a mailing list for Wikimedia Commons policy and project discussion. Since many admins are only on Commons infrequently, this is a good way to alert people about important happenings. The mailing list is nominally multilingual, but predominantly English.

If you are already subscribed to commons-l, I apologize for bothering you, and you are free to ignore this message. If you don't want to use your regular e-mail account, feel free to leave me a message, and I can send you a GMail invite. Traffic on the mailing list is relatively low, and we do not expect admins to read all messages to the list, but it would be nice if you could check on it at least every few weeks. Thanks for your time,--Eloquence 22:57, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image: Lazarus 0.9.7[edit]

Hello. Recently you removed this image with the following motive: (copyvio screenshot - contains parts of Windows XP)

What does that mean? So what that it contains parts of Windows XP? It doesn´t even include the logo of Windows or Microsoft, it´s just a screenshot with it on the background. Why is that a copyright problem? Even at the worse possible situation it would still at lease be Fair Use?

--200.204.118.228 03:05, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It contained parts of the copyrighted Windows GUI; "fair use" is not grounds for allowing copyright infringement on Wikimedia Commons. Alphax (talk) 15:51, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to WikiProject Nuvola 2.0+![edit]

It's good to know that I won't be running the project all by myself. In what ways do you plan to contribute? Will you be drawing new icons, improving the existing icons and/or recruiting more members?

Over the next few days, I intend to create more flags, as well as axonometric versions of the two pieces of furniture I've created. However, I think that will be about all the seed posting I can do.

I can, however, continue to coordinate the project and possibly fine-tune new icons. If we get more members and a steady stream of activity, I would be willing to set up a small newsletter to showcase new icons as they come in. Seahen 04:01, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I chose LEGO to illustrate my thank you messagess, because LEGO is a system that we build things with. Commons holds the building blocks that other wikis use to make great things. Without Commons images and media, other wikis would be much poorer. Let's help build the greatest freely available intellectual collection the world has ever known... together.

More images to delete...[edit]

I noticed that you deleted Image:Academia XII, 1972.jpg, presumably per its RfD. Could you also delete all the other images listed there? They all have been tagged {{Delete}} for a long time, and are also copyrighted, as shown in the delection request. Opening separate RfDs for each of these is just too much red tape, I think. Thanks. possibly an overreaction[edit]

Do you think that the child who comes running to tattle-tale first, must be in the right? I find it odd that on an admin board, where users come to admins for help, you give them advice as if they were also admins and have the power to do the things you suggest. Is this how to solve user conflicts? (Even from the description given, it's clearly not vandalism.) We are appointed to apply the rules unbendingly (--the notion that anything could be run in any manner different to the English Wikipedia is clearly outrageous) and declare who's right and who's bad? Bang the gavel, Judge! Lay down the law! Etc. Now we've dusted our hands of that (at least until it brews into a bigger battle, badwill & edit wars back with a vengeance), which other of the world's problems can we solve in twenty seconds?

Or perhaps we could try to deflate the tension, ignore the hyperbole, find a mutually acceptable solution and end the day with all parties happy enough to keep making useful contributions to the Commons? Mm, I dunno. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 17:03, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flickrreview[edit]

When you're reviewing a free image found in flickr, please write a messege to the Flickr user, saying:

Thanks for licensing this lovely picture as CC-BY. Your choice of a free license has allowed us to use your image in Wikimedia Commons - (add link here)

or something like that, to make sure that the Flickr user is pleased that his/her image can be found here (it's better to sign up, so you can get replies too - it's nice to read that the user is fluttered). When you add the {{Flickrreview}} tag, remove the {{User:FlickreviewR/reviewed-error}} tag if you see it, so the image will no longer appear in Category:Flickr images needing human review.

cookie JS change[edit]

I'm JS clueless, so ignore me if you know better... Did you test your change? I tested it pretty extensively and it certainly didn't replace my commons cookies. It would appear that assignment to cookie is special cased and works as intended. ... Seemed kinda non-intuitive but that's what the examples I found in the Internet did. Obviously we should do whatever is most compatible. :) --Gmaxwell 13:20, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"sanity check"[edit]

Hi Alphax. Thank you for nominating me--looks like it will succeed. I wanted to ask: what's a "sanity check"? --Fang Aili 14:47, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gotcha. I ran a few checks on HQCentral's uploads, but I couldn't find sources for some of them. --Fang Aili 15:20, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why? I found nothing against it (only an unanswered question at Template talk:Flickr), and at Category:Flickr we can read that "To place an image in this category, add the tag {{flickr}} to the bottom of the image's description page. If you are not sure which category an image belongs to, see Commons:Copyright tags. Please consider placing your image in a new or existing subcategory if this category is too large."

Which tag should be used by the Flickr images not uploaded by FlickrLickr (the vast majority, by the way)? Which category should they be into? Thanks. Regards. --Dodo 09:16, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's a job I could do: change the template and check that every image from Commons only have the "reviewer" field filled if the uploader is FlickrLickr. What do you think about that? Regards. --Dodo 09:35, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  2. Image:Tattoobylittlegirl.jpg (um, no)
  3. Image:9yearoldgirl.jpg (um, no)
  4. Image:12yearoldgirl.JPG (here we go again)

I mean: I thought they were a little bit weird when I saw them, but I cannot understand what do you talk about when you give those reasons in the deletions... Could you please explain? (Just for fun and curiosity, nothing more.) Thanks. Regards. --Dodo 20:11, 14 December 2006 (UTC) PS: I found this. Please take a look.[reply]

I'm not Alphax, but I can tell you why I probably would have deleted them. (1) They aren't clearly useful, commons is for useful images. (2) We have had many problems with strange people uploading pictures of other peoples children in a rather creepy matter, which is just tasteless... it seems to be becoming a favorite way to troll on commons. (3) We have no clear idea that the parents of some of these minors consent to the usage of the pictures. This is legally ugly in some jurisdictions. Also, the rights holder for 12yearoldgirl on the page you linked is identifyed as "<(name removed per request)" which does not at all appear to match the uploader's claim. Alone none of these factors would cause me to delete the images, but together they form a reasonable justification in my view. --Gmaxwell 03:55, 16 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
