First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons:License questions.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Admin?[edit]

Saw your post on Commons-l/Foundation-l. Would you like me to nominate you? Alphax (talk) 03:49, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, you'll need 200 contribs - Commons:CommonTasks has some suggestions, otherwise there's things like new image patrol... there's also the Wikimedia Logo Mosaic which needs duplicates replaced with other things (see the talk page). Or, if you're particularly bored, you could fill out the missing subcategories in Commons:Image classification system :) Alphax (talk) 04:30, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hooray! If you're using the Monobook skin, go to //commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Fang_Aili/monobook.js&action=edit and put the following in:
document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Quick-delete.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript"><\/script>');
//MediaWiki talk:Quick-delete.js
Then do a hard refresh (or go to //commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Fang_Aili/monobook.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s and refresh). You'll get some nice automation tools which let you speedy up that sort of thing. Happy editing! Alphax (talk) 04:43, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I've filled out a nomination form for you at Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes/Fang Aili; add it to Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes when you're ready. Sorry for taking so long :) Alphax (talk) 14:35, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wiztheora[edit]

Hi.

If you have a Mac or Linux you can use now the Wiztheora, I've programed it in Linux, but I'm testing testing it on the Mac and it works, just follow the instructions :-) --OsvaldoGago 22:51, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

George Merrill[edit]

Sorry, I don't know the source. I uploaded it long ago, when I was not still very aware of the rules here. So I suppose you should delete it. Best wishes. --G.dallorto 21:38, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Marin Soljačić[edit]

Sorry, I forgot to name a source. Today I received the permission from Marin Soljačić and it can been seen at [1]. Bye :-)) --Roberta F. 21:47, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CJK Stroke order project[edit]

Hello Fang Aili, I just seen and answered to you where you can contribute. You will have to start to use Photoshop or GIMP but we wrote pretty protocoles so that can be great :]. Yug (talk) 13:17, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: sanity check?[edit]

Even though we're 99% sure that someone has uploaded nothing but copyvios, we still need to actually look at things and not just run a deletion bot over their uploads. Alphax (talk) 15:04, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RFA: Thanks[edit]

Thank you for your support on my RFA. Now that I have been promoted, I promise to be as hardworking and fair with the admin tools as I have been with the other areas here on Commons. See you around and happy editing. Zzyzx11 15:53, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Fang Aili, congratulations! You now have the the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other SYSOPS, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons @ irc.freenode.net.

Administrative notice[edit]

Deutsch

Dear Fang Aili. I am writing to you to inform you that because of inactivity, you may lose your adminship on Commons.

Commons has a new policy on admin activity, Commons:Administrators/De-adminship, taken into use on June 13, 2007 (after a two-week poll on the proposed policy's talk page).

If you want to keep your adminship, you have to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section within 30 days. Note that if you don't make 5 admin actions in the following 5 months, you will then lose the adminship anyways.

Thank you,
abf /talk to me/ 18:42, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Inactivity[edit]

Hi Fang Aili. Thanks for signing at this page. Please note that your sysop-rights will be removed the next time we run an inactivity-section without any new notice, if you do not do 5 admin-actions till then.
Thank you for your long and helpfull work on Commons! abf /talk to me/ 12:52, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I am sad to tell you, but in accordeance to Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Aug-Sep 2008 you lost your adminship. If you want to have it back please request for it at COM:RfA.

Regards, abf /talk to me/ 11:26, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fang Aili,
as you are no longer admin on Commons, would you mind to remove the admin-bit from the babel-box on your userpage? Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 19:27, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, sorry that took so long. --Fang Aili talk 06:53, 1 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
