Copyright problem?

Hi ABF, what seems to be the problem with this image? I have clearly released it into the PD. I have had 3 other images deleted as well; my fix has been to upload to the English WP, where I have had no problems at all. Not very inclusive, but if Commons won't accept my images when WPEN will then I won't put them there. Freestyle-69 23:23, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Update checkimages.py please

Hello, I've added a new function in checkimages.py and I have done some rewrite. Maybe I will make some changes also in the next days. So, please, every time you use the bot in this month make a svn-update first (then, I'll re-send you an advise for the big updates like this one). I have some concerns about your userspace template, {{User:ABF/Warned}}. First, you should be aware that userspace templates (except image credits) aren't meant to be used extensively in mainspace (e.g. image pages); if you believe it should be used there, make it a Template. Second, it's not reasonable to ask "PLEASE LEAVE THIS TAG IN THE IMAGE EVEN IF YOU KEEP THE IMAGE. IT'S FOR STATISTIC REASONS." It's an intimidating warning message, and there's absolutely no reason for it if the image is valid. Finally, the template doesn't appear to be based on any Commons policy and it has a hard-coded date.

These issues will need to be addressed to keep using it in mainspace. Superm401 - Talk 21:45, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

May be you can help me.
I made a mistake while uploading Adrienne Clarkson photo. I uploaded the one named Adrienne Clarkson.jpg (with one space), but discovered that there was another image with the same name.
So I uploaded the same photo under the name AdrienneClarkson.jpg without a space, with description, licence, and so on.

Collard

Why did you block him? There was no purpose in doing so. Blocks are not punishment, and by blocking him again, doubling the time, you're basically punishing him. Majorly (talk) 10:36, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

I have to say I am inclined to agree with Majorly. Blocks really are to prevent disruption. It would seem preferable to engage with Collard (a hard working admin) to discuss the position?

If he continues to behave inappropriately (& his behaviour was inappropriate) then we need to take this to the community for discussion.

The policy states nothing about blocking for abuse of admin rights. Of course, if he went on a delete spree you should, and find a steward to desysop. This was, I think, a misunderstanding. I have told you before, ABF, about not blocking way after the incident. What exactly were you trying to prevent by blocking him some seven hours later? Also, I see nothing in the policy about doubling the block. This kind of thing makes you just as bad as Collard, imo. Majorly (talk) 20:28, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Removal of image from "Permian–Triassic extinction event"

Hi, I am annoyed about the removal of the Stampfli-Borel map from Permian–Triassic extinction event. I do not know how it came to be removed from Wikimedia Commons, whether it was by a bot or by a warm, breathing human being. If you were not personally involved in the deletion of the image, please do not take the following comments personally.

Either way, the deletion was a mistake, because whatever policy motivated the deletion makes it more difficult for editors to illustrate articles and these additional difficulties are not justified by objective considerations such as avoidance of copyright issues - they appear to be mere bureaucratic rules that provide no benefit to readers or editors of Wikipedia. In addition the upload process does not ask for a category nor provide any help in assigning a category. In fact the "upload" link on a Wikipedia page directs to a Wikipedia page upload page, not a Wikimedia upload page. Furthermore if one wants to upload to Wikimedia one has to get a separate account (yes, I've noticed there appear to be global accounts, but I have seen no announcment of this or advice on how to upgrade an existing account). This entire collection of obstacles and hidden traps is contrary to a current effort to simplify Wikipedia editing in order to attract new editors.

PS I notice this edit page has no one-click link for adding signatures. This is another instance of user-unfriendliness on the part of WikiMedia Commons.

I made a mistake... Can you help?

You were the first person to comment on my talk page haha, so I decided to ask you. I've been a member of the English Wikipedia for probably a month or two now, and I didn't know I was supposed to be uploading photos I've taken to the Commons.. I've taken maybe 25-30 pictures, but they're all over on the en part of the site. Omg, I have to upload all of them again? It takes me forever to upload one picture haha. My internet is wireless through AT&T, and for some reason, it doesn't like to upload things. I have to retry like 20 times to upload one picture, so uploading 25-30 would take the better part of an entire day. Is there not an easier way? --Dudemanfellabra 17:22, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Ah.. thanks for telling me about Magnus Manske's File Upload Bot.. The direct upload feature made it reeeeally easy by eliminating the need for me to upload from my computer; it does the transfer completely on the server. I just transferred from en 30 of the 38 images in Category:Meridian, Mississippi in about an hour haha. Once again, thanks a lot!--Dudemanfellabra 18:52, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Hallo ABF, ich hätte da mal eine bitte an dich. Du weißt ja, dass ich mit Commons so meine Probleme habe. Alle Bilder auf dieser Seite gehören in diese Kat gesteckt. Ich hab leider überhaupt keine Zeit und in den nächsten drei Tagen nichtmal internet. Wäre nett, wenn du mir die Bilder im Format
