Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Ziko,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze[edit]

Hallo Ziko,

in Kürze ist es wieder soweit. Der nun schon traditionelle Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments wird im September zum vierten Mal stattfinden. In ähnlicher Form hatte unlängst der Wettbewerb "Wiki Loves Earth" eine erfolgreiche Premiere. Zu allen bisherigen vier Wettbewerben haben seit 2011 gut 3000 unterschiedliche Teilnehmer (User) ihren Beitrag geleistet. Du warst dabei, und bist auch herzlich eingeladen, am bevorstehenden WLM-Wettbewerb wieder dabei zu sein.

Allein in Deutschland wurden in den letzten drei Jahren im Rahmen von WLM rund 100.000 Fotos zu den insgesamt ca. 850.000 Kulturdenkmalen bundesweit hochgeladen. Jährlich haben sich mehrere Hundert Wiki-Fotographen daran beteiligt. Auch im kommenden Denkmalmonat wird dies gewiss wieder der Fall sein. Der Tag des offenen Denkmals am 14. September bietet bundesweit vielfältige Möglichkeiten, Denkmale nicht nur von außen, sondern auch von innen zu fotografieren. Denkmallisten sind dabei ein wichtiger Orientierungspunkt und zugleich auch Ziel der Einbindung der Fotos. Auch in diesem Jahr sind wieder neue Denkmallisten hinzugekommen, die hilfreich bei der Planung von individuellen oder Gruppen-Fototouren sind und auf eine Bebilderung warten, wie z.B. zu Görlitz oder Zittau. Unter den Landeshauptstädten fehlt nur noch Stuttgart. Aber auch hier ist Licht in Sicht.

In der Mitte Deutschlands hat die Denkmallandschaft der thüringischen Landeshauptstadt Erfurt nun das Licht der Wikipedia-Welt entdeckt. Mehr als 50 Tabellen enthalten 3.700 Denkmale. Allein die wunderschön restaurierte Altstadt umfasst 1.800 Denkmale. Eine von WMDE geförderte WLM-Fototour nach Erfurt am Wochenende vom 29. – 31. August lädt herzlich ein, diese einzigartige Kulturlandschaft zu dokumentieren. Mehr Informationen findest Du auf der Projektseite.

Auteur ben jij, terwijl je op de foto staat[edit]

Hi Ziko, ik las net even je pagina door op Meta en zag deze foto erop staan. Nu moet ik heel flauw (maar rechtvaardig) doen, maar je bent duidelijk niet de auteur van deze foto (mits je zonder zelfontspanner werkt en daar ga ik even vanuit) want je handen zijn in beeld. De rechthebbende is, zoals je weet, de fotograaf, en niet degene die op de foto staat. Ik ga ze uiteraard niet nominieren voor verwijdering, want ik ga ervan uit dat je weet hoe de licenties van Commons werken, maar we moeten dit wel even oplossen. Om even de OTRS-tekst te quoten: "Kunt u de fotograaf vragen de afbeelding onder een vrije licentie vrij te geven, of duidelijk maken hoe de auteursrechten zijn overgedragen?". Verder:

Uitnodiging prijsuitreiking Wiki Loves Earth op zondag 5 oktober in Naturalis[edit]

Geachte meneer/mevrouw,

Hierbij nodig ik u namens Wikimedia Nederland u graag uit voor de prijsuitreiking van Wiki Loves Earth op zondag 5 oktober in Naturalis. Deze wedstrijd leverde maar liefst 1.395 foto’s en geluidfragmenten op, allemaal gemaakt in de Nederlandse Nationale Parken. Verder zal Wikimedia Nederland informatie geven over het ‘Project Natuur’. De komende jaren willen we de informatie over de natuur op Wikipedia aanvullen en verbeteren.

Das ist ja ein vielfach angesehenes interessantes Bild, aber mittlerweile nicht mehr ganz aktuell. Und es wäre interessant zu sehen, welche Veränderungen sich hier mit der Zeit ergeben ... Sorry, ich hab die Meldung wohl nicht eher gesehen. Tja, die Grafik herzustellen war recht aufwändig. Ich würde mich freuen, wenn es mal ein Tool dafür gibt. Nieuwe 'versie' afbeelding[edit]

Hallo Ziko, ik weet niet of je deze wijziging had gezien, maar het resultaat ervan is in elk geval dat er een plaatje te zien is waar jouw naam bij staat, terwijl die foto helemaal niet door jou is gemaakt (en ook de datum klopt niet meer). Dat lijkt me geen gewenste situatie. Ik zou dit willen terugdraaien, maar het gaat om jouw foto die nu naar de achtergrond is verdwenen, dus ik leg het maar aan jou voor. Project scope[edit]

Hi Ziko, please respect that Commons has a project scope and that contributed images must be realistically useful for an educational purpose. For this reason please give useful categories and useful descriptions to your images. So that every other user can find your images through their categories and can understand what you want to teach with the images through their descriptions. To meet the project scope please keep everything as educational as possible. Der WLM-Countdown hat begonnen[edit]

Hallo Ziko,

nun ist es wieder soweit. Vom 1. bis zum 30. September findet zum fünften Mal der internationale Wettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments statt. Im Mittelpunkt steht bekanntlich das Fotografieren von Kulturdenkmalen. Du hast an einem der letzten Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen und wir freuen uns auf weitere Bildbeiträge von Dir.

Viele interessante Motive, nicht nur Burgen und Schlösser, sondern auch Fachwerkhäuser, Brücken und Brunnen, technische und Industriedenkmale und vieles mehr gibt es noch zu fotografieren, damit sie in der Wikipedia dokumentiert werden können. Nützliche Tipps findest du auf unserer WLM-Projektseite. Du kannst gerne individuell Fototouren durchführen oder aber Dich auch Gruppentouren anschließen. Besonders freuen wir uns auf Fotos, die Lücken in den Denkmallisten der Wikipedia ausfüllen.

Darüber hinaus kannst Du auch an der Arbeit der Jury teilnehmen, die Mitte Oktober die Fotos bewerten und die Gewinner ermitteln wird. Bis zum 15. August kannst du hier Deine Bewerbung einreichen.

Hi there! Could you clarify where your picture of a Sutton Hoo helmet replica was taken? The file says that the location is the British Museum, which indeed has a replica made by the Royal Armouries, but the helmet you photographed (and the background thereof) looks like it is the replica displayed at the actual Sutton Hoo site (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/sutton-hoo). And is there a reason why you credit it to Kreuz even if the name (bottom right) is another one? (I know it has been a long time since the upload... so you may not have these informations any more).

Hello, thank you for your post. This chart was in the UEA archives with regard to contact with the LdN, without additional information (meta data). As the chart is partially in Esperanto, I suppose that an Esperanto speaking person - not necessarily a UEA collaborator, but possibly Kreuz or Privat - was involved in the production. Du verwendest Logos aus Wikiversity-Projekten, welche unter CC BY-SA 3.0 veröffentlicht sind, diese verlangen eine Namensnennung, und eine Quelle du nennst keines der beiden:

  • ob Änderungen vorgenommen wurden: fehlt

Hello, thank you for the feedback. You are totally right; actually today that point came to my mind. But then I thought that "no-deal" is in a way the default outcome if the British government does nothing.
A miss is, by the way, that the transition period can be prolonged, too. And: the Withdrawal Agreement needs also the okay of the European Parliament (the president just today made news on this matter).

Wiki Loves Monuments France 2019[edit]

Bonjour,

Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est de retour et ouvert jusqu'à 31 septembre ! Déjà 8310 photos ont été importés cette année, vous aussi rejoignez le concours !

Le concours concerne tous les monuments présents dans la base Mérimée (qu'ils soient classés, inscrits ou simplement classés). De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la chapelle au coin de la rue aux mégalithes en forêt, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Où que vous soyez il y a des monuments autour de chez vous. Enfin, vous pouvez mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments. Pour information, le règlement est disponible sur le site du concours. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international sélectionnera ensuite des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Si vous avez des questions, l'équipe organisatrice se fera un plaisir d'y répondre.

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff[edit]

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

Le concours Wiki Loves Monuments France est ouvert pour une semaine encore, jusqu'au 30 septembre. Déjà plus de 6 000 photos ont été importées cette année alors vous aussi rejoignez le concours ! Cette campagne de contribution concerne tous les monuments et objets mobiliers présents dans la base Mérimée et dans la base Palissy. De l'imposant château aux ruines industrielles, de la verrière décorative au reliquaire, c'est un impressionnant patrimoine qui attend d'être photographié et documenté. Vous pouvez dès à présent mettre en ligne autant de photos que vous le souhaitez de ces monuments et objets du patrimoine français. Nous attendons vos photos avec impatience !

Les plus belles photos seront sélectionnées par un jury national composé d'amateurs et de professionnels, de contributeurs à Wikimedia Commons et d'acteurs du patrimoine. Un jury international constituera ensuite une sélection des meilleures photographies mondiales.

Commons Photographers User Group: first board election[edit]

Medea-chart database on old nautical charts[edit]

Hi, I’m sending this message to all participants of Commons Wikimaps listed here, so that I can be pretty sure it will get to some of you. I am the Principal Investigator of the ERC funded project Medea-Chart ([2]), hosted by the University of Lisbon, whose scientific objective is the study of the genesis, evolution and use of nautical charts from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. One of the visible outcomes of our project is the Medea-Chart database, aimed at storing and making available information and images of all extant manuscript nautical charts: [3]. Since the images of old maps and charts are now in the public domain and our database is open to all, I’m sure your project could benefit from it. The most obvious way would be to download from there all the images you are interested in, but I imagine you could use the tool for more sophisticated purposes. For now, I invite all of you to go there, browse the database, do geographical searches, read our “Chart of the Week” mini-articles, etc. You don’t even need to register for that.
