How to set up subtitles on Commons and list them for translation

Add subtitles to videos for use in playback here

[edit]

0. Upload tools such as video2commons do this automatically if you select 'import subtitles'.

If you can't do that... 1. Create the file TimedText:FILENAME.en.srt with the .srt file.

2. Test turning subtitles on while embedding or playing back video.

Prepare the subtitles for translation

[edit]

1. Create a version of the subtitles for translation. (Todo: fix the webtool on Commons to do this from a URL of the .srt)

  • Take auto-generated subtitles (TimedText:FILENAME.en.srt), paste into a new text-file, regexp the file to add (translate) | (/translate) tags around each line.
  • Paste the result into FILENAME/srt. Example: Motivation for 6.002x (MITx).webm/srt
  • Get a translation admin to flag this file for translation. (talk to Jean-Fred about automating this)

2. Engage translators for the desired target language.

  • Point translators to the page you created above: a small "Translate this" link at the top-center of that page leads to the translatetext interface.
  • You can track % completion for a given target language from that page.
