Below is a table of all the unparished areas in England. Note that the "name" is not necessarily a true name, but is intended to be a descriptive identification of each area. Further commentary is below the table.

This is a work in progress, hopefully better labels can be given to the complex cases.

General comments

There are a few general classes above:

1. Whole district
2. Charter trustees
3. District less 1 or 2 CPs
4. Complex (ie several CPs or unparished areas in district)

The first two cases are easy to handle, the second pair less so:

1. In case where the whole district is unparished, no parish-level category needed - just use the district-level category
2. In case where there are charter trustees, a parish-level category should exist. The charter trustee area (normally the pre-1974 district) defines the covered region, as if it were parished.
3. When the district is essentially unparished, a separate category for the unparished area is probably not needed - just use the district category and have the CP as a subcategory. However, if the core settlement is clearly distinct from the district may be different.
4. Complex cases are complex. The unparished area may contain the entirety of a distinct settlement, and should have a category. Or it might be a situation like the previous one, with 3 or 4 parishes within the settlement, which may not need a category. Or the unparished area may cover multiple settlements, in which case each settlement should have its own category, but not one for the unparished area as a whole.

Examples of each of the 4 cases:

Specifics by county

The general cases of unparished districts and charter trustees are not described below.

• (82 cases) When the entire district is unparished, the district should be marked as an unparished area itself. No parish-level category is required, but subcategories should be created when required as normal. For example, Category:Districts of Liverpool‎.
• (16 cases) When charter trustees have been appointed, then the unparished area defines a parish-level region which should have a category.
• (1 case) Grimsby and Cleethorpes form a single area. They both have charter trustees. A category for the unparished area as a whole is not required, but the two towns should be treated as distinct and each have their own parish-level category.
• (1 case) Lundy is unique, and would have a category irrespective of its admin status. It belongs in the unparished areas tree.

"Primary category" means that the base name should be for the subject described - either at that location or as a category redirect.

Bedfordshire

• Bedford - Primary category for settlement (unparished area plus Brickhill CP). No category for unparished area. Brickhill CP to be treated identically to localities in unparished area.

Devon

• Lundy - Primary category for unparished area. Treat identically to CPs in district.
• Torquay and Paignton - No category for unparished area. Brixham CP to be treated identically to localities in unparished area.

East Sussex

• Brighton and Hove - Primary category for district, no category for unparished area. The settlements (eg Hove) placed in same category as Rottingdean CP, and marked as unparished.
• Saltdean - Primary category for unparished area. Place in same category as Rottingdean CP

Greater London

• Westminster - Primary category for unparished locality. No category for unparished area. Queens Park CP to be treated identically to localities in unparished area.
