Poor categorisation

Can you please improve your categories of Australian subjects? One of many examples include Category:Rock formations on South Pearson Island but also dumping photographs into city categories (e.g. Category:Sydney, Category:Perth and Category:Melbourne). You have also been putting categories of objects/places into a single category where it'll get lost. While most are uncategorised, there has been a handful whose categories were ok that have been part of the extra workload you've but onto others (which in some cases if worse than having it as 'uncategorised'. Be more careful

You recently created a useless category (Duck Valley, Nevada). This category has been made a redirect, sending all files to Owyhee, Nevada, which is the actual name of the town. Duck Valley is the name of the Indian Reservation the town is located within. I see you are working hard to categorize uncategorized items, and its appreciated, but be more careful with creating new categories for subjects you don't seem to know about. Famartin, I'm very sorry I upset you. I did spend time researching via Google and also I know there is a place called Duck Valley having lived in the area. Unfortunately there is no category for the Indian Reservation as there are obvious cultural biases on the Commons and I am very aware of this one. I realized that I took a risk when I couldn't tack a WP article on for verification to protect myself. I'm sorry you cannot be more tolerant. Category:Nanga Parbat (Rama Lake view)

Hi, as most (3 out of 4) pictures in that category stated in their descriptions: Nanga Parbat is not visible from Rama Lake. You can see some of the summits of Chongra Peak, which is east of Nanga Parbat but is considered as an independent mountain. So I opened a speedy deletion request for that category. Worthless categories

Hello, I think that categories such as this only pretend that the image is correctly categorized and remove the uncategorized template. It is better to keep it without such relatively worthless categories, so that the picture is listed as uncategorized and can be corrected in future. We have a routine on Czech Wikipedia to run quarries for new uncategorized pictures with Czech description and we fix all of those. Thanks --Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 10:00, 7 October 2017 (UTC)

Jmabel, I guess that everyone has their own point of view. One of my problems on the Commons as a user has to know detailed information about an image in order to find it. (e.g. in many cases, a user has to know an image's district or province in a country in order to know it exists. Or know whether its a village, city, populated place etc. Even though I lived in Oregon at one point and am familiar with Astoria, I never would have looked under the categories you mention to grok that a container ship could be off the shore of the Astoria I remember. Never would have thought it and didn't know about the bridge or column. I guess the whole area has become very urbanized since I was there last. Isn't the Commons supposed to be a communal endeavor? Please feel free to narrow down its category. I've stayed away from Washington State because you objected previously that I wasn't narrowing down the categories sufficiently. Shwe In Bin Monastery (1), Shwe Inbin Temple (2) and Teak Monastery (3) are all the same. I suggest to use (1) as name for the commons category, eventually redirect (3) to (1) and delete (2) after moving all files to (1). If this is ok for You I would do that work. Hi Gerd Eichmann. Earlier today I make a redirect for the Shwe In Bin Monastery to the Teak Monastery [2] and have been categorizing the monastery photos I ran across as the Teak Monastery. So you are saying there is no temple? Just the Teak Monastery? If so, it's fine with me if you cat-a-lot the temple into the Teak Monastery. Thanks for letting me know that the temple doesn't exist. Gerd Eichmann, you are certainly more of an authority than I am on this subject. My only concern is that it's clear that the correct name is confusing to many, given the several ways used to spell it. My concern is that the common name "Teak Monastery" is probably more well known to users than its formal name. As long as there are clear redirects, so that those looking for the common name can find it. On the English Wikipedia, the monastery is apparently called Shwenandaw Monastery. On Google this name is more common as well. The Commons has a category Category:Shwenandaw Monastery. Could you clarify all this for me? Hi Kalbbes, the English Wikipedia has Shwenandaw Monastery and Shweinbin Monastery, two different things. The second one is our (1), spelled without blanks. Different spelling is due to the fact, that nobody except scientists use the scientific transcription from burmese to latin alphabet. Really confusing! What are we doing?
