Why this edit?[edit]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Middle_East_Technical_University&diff=195001413&oldid=13927783

The category doesn't seem to make sense to me in this context. - Jmabel ! talk 05:25, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

Jmabel, your judgment is probably definitely better than mine. Those fotos were in Category:Architecture, so I put them all together under the one name they all had and returned them to the same category (Architecture). Please do what you think best. All those many fotos under the general category Architecture but not in a sub category didn't make sense to me either but I didn't know what was best. (Some of those photos were already in the category, but I didn't realize that at the time. Now I see what a mess I made. Sorry.) Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 12:36, 2 May 2016 (UTC)

walking street in Chiang Mai[edit]

Go have a look on Google Street View what the walking street in Chiang Mai looks like -> https://www.google.com/maps/place/Rachadamnoen+Rd,+Amphoe+Mueang+Chiang+Mai,+Chang+Wat+Chiang+Mai,+Thailand/@18.7879009,98.9895576,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x30da3aa213a1642b:0xaae6a3d0370d06e6!8m2!3d18.7879009!4d98.9917516?hl=en - Takeaway (talk) 20:45, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Takeaway, I can't make much sense of that map (poor eye sight). The category was probably a poor decision on my part. Kalbbes (talk) 20:56, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
It was really a puzzle for me because nothing in the images indicated either that they had been photographed on the non-existing "Walking street of Chiang Mai". - Takeaway (talk) 21:23, 6 May 2016 (UTC)
Puzzle to me now too, as I said on the cat discussion page. Kalbbes (talk) 21:32, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

Category:Boualam village[edit]

Are you sure that Category:Boualam village is the name of a village? I always assumed that it was just the name of the uploader. See the text in his profile -> User:محمد بوعلام عصامي. Could you please revert your edits and also have the category deleted? - Takeaway (talk) 21:22, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Categories in Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Next time, also put categories into a location category such as here. - Takeaway (talk) 21:35, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

And try to be as complete as possible when creating categories. See for instance this here. - Takeaway (talk) 21:55, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

I also changed this because the category that you created (Category:Traditional dance with guests) is not a good category at all. The category name does not specify where it is but it was still categorised as if it was part of a specific location. It would be best if you asked for a speedy delete for the category because if I do it, it will first need to go through a whole deletion request system that will take at least a week and would involve more work for more people. - Takeaway (talk) 22:01, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi, in addition a further hint: please avoid to categorize images on 'state' or 'capital city' level which are tagged with the Template:Categorise, among them [Category:Kerala], [Category:Andhra Pradesh], [Category:Hyderabad, India], etc, as you increasingly started to do February 2017. thx and bibi, Roland zh (talk) 20:44, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Comment: as pointed to before, avoid such {categorise} 'categorizations', again, Roland zh (talk) 18:33, 13 February 2017 (UTC)

Please verify information before creating categories[edit]

Category:Akchour mountain. Akchour is not a mountain but a village. See -> https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akchour - Takeaway (talk) 21:42, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

As for Category:Piusa koobaste ümbrus, "Piusa koobaste" means "Piusa Caves" (for which there is already a category), and "ümbrus" just means "surroundings". Please do not just copy stuff int a category name if you are not sure what it actually means. - Takeaway (talk) 21:50, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

There is no Mohammedia Province. There is a Category:Mohammedia Prefecture. Read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Administrative_divisions_of_Morocco#Casablanca-Settat_Region for more info. - Takeaway (talk) 22:23, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Takeaway, I'm sorry. Maybe this isn't ok but I used this method for other countries successfully I think. When I finally obtained a map of Pakistan, I found I ultimately was accurate overall. It's a way for me to figure out the country, and I do keep track of these categories I make up. Then I update them as I learn more. If you would rather, I can just stay away from Morocco. That would be best I think. I don't want to upset anyone. Again, I'm sorry. Kalbbes (talk) 22:29, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
p.s. I didn't make up province. It was already there and the category came up automatically. Kalbbes (talk) 22:29, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
It would probably be best to stick to categorising things that are known to you. But if you do not know them, you should really verify things as much as possible before creating a category. If you are more comfortable and knowledgeable about Pakistan, perhaps it would be best to stick to recategorising files there. Just applying whatever someone has written in an upload as a category name is not a good idea because many uploaders, tourists for instance but also non-English speakers who are trying out their best English for wikipedia, have no idea themselves of what the correct name is for something.
You are correct, you did not create that province category. I discovered that a lot of them are incorrect. Other people who had no idea of what they were doing, apparently made those mistakes in the subcategories of Category:Provinces of Morocco. :( - Takeaway (talk) 22:38, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

Hello! I reverted your edits because it was an overcategorizing. Keep up the good editing! - - Globetrotter19 (talk) 17:40, 4 July 2016 (UTC)

File:Trang trại.jpg[edit]

Just wondering what "Trang trại" is that you added as a category with this edit, and also, how do you know that the water in the background is a river? I changed the river category into Category:Unidentified bodies of water and Google Translate says that "Trang trai" means "farm" in Vietnamese. I don't think that just using a file's name as a category is a good idea, especially not if you yourself have no idea what it means. I suggest that you to stop using file names as category names. - Takeaway (talk) 15:43, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

(edit conflict) Takeaway, I don't know what "Trang trại" is, although I think it is a place. I don't read the Vietnam language so I'm trying to figure it out. I have looked through this contributor's photos; I think they would be an addition to the Commons if their location could be figured out. The up-loader does not seem to understand English, so I try to help out in such situations. My plan is to look through Vietnam categories and learn more about the country. This gives me pleasure and I have learned so much about the world doing this. Meanwhile, I try to add the photos to categories where there is some chance a person familiar with the language and geographical area will know and fix any errors I make. (I come across so many picture uploaded years ago that have been essentially lost because they have never been categorized. I have fixed the errors of others many times when I am familiar with the place and can confidently do so. When I have made numerous corrections to the mistakes of others I don't upset them by notifying them. Working on the Commons is a big learning curve and it is easy to become very discouraged. Is there a rule that my research attempts are forbidden or that I have done a large damage to the Commons in my efforts? Do you feel that I am a net negative to the Commons? If you wish I can stop categorizing on the Commons and go elsewhere on the web that I enjoy also. Please let me know if this is the case. I will leave instantly if that is you preference. I become sad when I receive your messages and feel there is no point for me to try to help out here. Best wishes, Kalbbes (talk) 16:21, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Takeaway, I see you changed your message while I was answering you. Your rewritten message is more helpful and less discouraging. I love looking at the photos and figuring them out, but perhaps I'm not up to the job. Best wishes, Kalbbes (talk) 16:27, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
If you use Chrome as a browser, you can highlight a piece of text, and then right click on it. The drop-down menu then shows you the option to choose to translate the highlighted piece of text. You can also copy and paste text and put it into https://translate.google.com. It has been my experience, that editors who do not correctly or insufficiently research what they are doing, might as well not do it as it often leads to mistakes. - Takeaway (talk) 16:35, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

Karakorams etc.[edit]

This is NOT Ladyfinger peak

Hi Kalbbes, I came across your categorization work in northern pakistan from time to time. And I must admit that I cannot agree with all your edits. First of all I am not sure if it is necessary to have sub-categories for views of mountains from similar directions. Take for example Ladyfinger Peak in the Batura Muztagh, a subpeak of Hunza Peak, which again is a subpeak of Ultar Sar. This mountain can only be seen from the Hunza Valley near Karimabad. Ok, there are some aerial views and a view from the rash lake area, too, but these are rare exceptions... I therefore emptied the categories Category:Ladyfinger Peak (Hunza Valley view) and Category:Ladyfinger Peak (Karimabad view) and had asked for deletion. I did so with some other mountain views, too.

Maybe there are some cases where it is suitable to sort mountain images by their views, but if you create those categories, you should IMHO be more consistent and put all files that are sharing a certain perspective in those new categories.

That needed to be said in the first place...

What I found even more crucial is the fact that you seem to derive category names from file names or image discriptions without verifying them. Please be aware that the info found in those files is not always correct. Especially some (not all) pictures that have been uploaded during wiki loves earth seem to be problematic. (Not talking about licences at all...)

So Ladyfinger Peak again. Please look at the picture. Filename says File:Ladyfinger_Peak_from_Karimabad_Hunza_Valley_Northern_Pakistan.JPG But it is not. This is Ultar Sar itself. Please compare with this Picture where you find Ultar Sar on the right and Ladyfinger Peak on the left. I had already corrected the image description to Ultar Sar when I changed the category to Ultar Sar, but now you re-changed it to Ladyfinger. I will revert this in a minute... (Of course I should have already asked for renaming the file to a name containing Ultar Sar, but I haven't done it yet...Did so just now... --Rupert Pupkin (talk) 22:06, 19 September 2016 (UTC))

So don't get me wrong, I make mistakes too. Just be a bit more careful and don't just relie on the first hand information of the original uploader when you create categories. best regards --Rupert Pupkin (talk) 21:47, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Spantik[edit]

and another one. You took all images from category:Spantik and moved them to category:Golden Peak some month ago. Why did you do that? That mountain is one of the eponymous mountains of the category:Spantik-Sosbun Mountains after all. --Rupert Pupkin (talk) 21:55, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

Please, stop creating categories for districts of Moscow. There are already created categories for absolutely each of them for a very long time. Try to search before creating.--Stolbovsky (talk) 21:42, 24 November 2016 (UTC)

Category:Carillon Point[edit]

I'm dubious about putting Category:Carillon Point as a child category of Category:Carillons in the United States. Apparently the three images we currently have in the category all do show the carillon, but Carillon Point is an entire complex of buildings. - Jmabel ! talk 00:08, 15 December 2016 (UTC)

Jmabel, I agree with your conclusion re Category:Carillons in the United States. I copied that cat without sufficient thought. I should have been more careful. Thanks for checking it out. I've hopefully remedied the mistake by removing that cat and adding the three other Carillon Point images in Kirkland, WA. Also added another aerial view labeled Carillon Point, though perhaps that should be in a more general cat re Kirkland. Kalbbes (talk) 15:07, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
