People of Tunisia[edit]

Hi Frank!

You're right for the Category:Politicians of Tunisia and I put Category:People of Tunisia back instead of Category:Men of Tunisia. For the Hédi Nouira case, he is already categorized in Category:Prime ministers of Tunisia which are all men. Thus all the category is now under Category:Men of Tunisia. "needing categories"[edit]

Hello Frank! Ich habe das Tag "needing categories" verwendet, weil die Kategorie "men" mir zu allgemein erschien. Men ist meiner Ansicht nach eine "wenn es sonst nicht eingeordnet werden kann, dann aber auf jeden Fall hier" Kategorie, quasi der Restehaufen der Nation. Wenn das Bild quasi "tiefer" eingeordnet worden wäre z.B. als britische Adlige des 18.Jahrhunderts oder so wäre es weniger schlimm gewesen und dann hätte ich auch nicht das Tag gesetzt. Ich versuche ein Bild auch immer aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln zu betrachten. In dem Fall ist es die Darstellung eines bestimmten Mannes, der namentlich bekannt ist. Dieser hat eine bekanntes Geburts- und Sterbedatum. Bis hierhin ist das Bild ein Passfoto des 18. Jahrhunderts. Es ist aber auch ein Ölbild und zwar ein Porträit eines Mannes. In diesem Fall ist der Maler namentlich bekannt. Aus diesem Grund habe ich es in die Galerie "Sir Godfrey Kneller" eingestellt. mit freundlichen Grüßen Akinom (talk) 08:57, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

My apologies[edit]

Hello, I see that you clean up very often my first rough categorisation work. Sometimes, I am much ashamed for doing half work. Basically, I try to clean up some lists where there are no categories and when I feel that there are experienced users in the area, I do it quickly to steer it in the right direction and to get it going. In other areas, where there is little category infrastructure or experience, I try to do a more complete job. So please, don't take it personally. Don't worry! I surely don't take it personally; until this moment I even didn't remark that you were involved. I myself oftenly refine the categories of many pictures only by one stage at a time. Ich bin davon ausgegangen (wie ich eben festgestellt habe, fälschlich), dass die Category:Actors from Austria irgendwo weiter oben der Category:Men zugeordnet ist. Wenn dem so wäre, könnte man Category:Men of Austria als Oberkategorie weglassen. Mein Fehler. Ich mach's wieder rein.

Overcategorization[edit]

Hallo. Die Kategorie category:mannequins ist eine direkte Unterkategorie von category:shop windows, daher ist letztere zu entfernen. siehe Diskussion [/ Doppelkategoriesierung] und auf englisch [[1]]. Gruss Traumrune (talk) 21:03, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Hallo Traumrune! So wie die Kategorien derzeit aufgebaut sind, hast Du - formal gesehen - recht. Mir geht es aber darum, dass es bei den Schaufenster- und Schaufensterpuppenbildern nicht nur Aspekte der Puppe, sondern auch solche des Schaufensters allgemein gibt (Reflexe im Glas, Gestaltung des Fensters als Ganzes ...). Diese Seite kommt nicht mehr zur Geltung, wenn wir nur noch die Puppe kategorisieren. Vielleicht müssten wir unter "Shop windows" und neben "Mannequins" noch ne zusätzliche Kategorie einführen "Schaufenstergestaltung" o.ä. gruß, fcm. --Frank C. Wenn's die Kategorie gibt, kann's ja nicht so falsch sein, Bilder dort reinzutun. Ich sehe keinen Schaden in meinem Tun, und auch ein geringer Nutzen ist ein Nutzen. Wenn Dir die Kategorie als solche unsinnig erscheint, musst Du die Diskussion wohl woanders führen.

Das Problem ist, dass durch Deine Edits die Bilder aus den Listen der zu kategorisierenden Bundesarchivbilder herausfallen, was Hotcat automatisch macht. Wenn das gewünscht wäre, alle 100.000 Bilder mit dieser Cat zu versehen, würden wir das per Bot tun.

Da seh ich zwei Aspekte:

1. Die Verwendung von Hotcat, weil es die Vorlage mit dem "Uncategorized-BArch" entfernt. Das kann ich umgehen, und hab ich auch beim letzten Schwung.

2. Da (fast) alle Bilder in der Tat s/w sind, warum macht ihr das mit dem Bot nicht?

Die category enthielte dann 80.000 Bilder aus dem Bundesarchiv, wem würde das helfen? Guck Dir doch lieber einzelne Bilder genauer an und vergib aussagekräftige Kategorien, das würde helfen.Mbdortmund (talk) 21:40, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

(3xBK) Hallo Frank, wenn du Bundesarchiv-Bilder kategorisieren willst, dann kategorisiere bitte richtig und wenigstens einigermaßen vollständig. Die Bilder aus der Wartungskategorie lediglich in die schwarz-weiß-Kategorie zu verschieben ist definitiv nicht hilfreich. Wenn die Bilder sonst keine andere Kategorie bekommen, sind sie praktisch unauffindbar. In der Regel sucht man nach Bildern von bestimmten Orten/Personen/Anlässen etc., aber nicht konkret nach Schwarz-weiß-Bildern aus Deutschland. Die Kategorie ist als Zusatzkategorie zu eigentlichen Inhaltskategorien praktisch, aber nicht als einzige Kategorie. Du verhinderst damit auch, dass andere Leute die Bilder finden und sie in vollständigere Kategorien einsortieren, sodass sie besser auffindbar sind. Ich versteh ja, glaub ich, was Ihr wollt, und ich hab ja auch (s.o.) schon aufgehört mit Hotcat daran zu arbeiten, es werden also durch meine Edits keine Bilder mehr aus der Kategorie "Uncategorized-BArch" rausgetan. Trotzdem: Wenn ich auch nicht so arbeite wie Ihr, so schade ich doch nicht, wenn ich die Kategorie mit dem s/w massenweise vergebe. Wenn Ihr da anderer Meinung seid, dann muss man über diese Massenkategorie und ihren Sinn reden, nicht über die Zuordnung; man müsste also dann die Kategorie selber hinterfragen, sie also z.B. ganz weglassen oder weiter mit Unterkategorien verfeinern.

Hallo Frank, BK steht für Bearbeitungskonflikt. Der entsteht, wenn man anfängt, eine Seite zu bearbeiten und währenddessen jemand anders dieselbe Seite bearbeitet. 3x heißt hier, dass ihr 3 mal schneller wart als ich und mein Beitrag sich daher eigtl auf ein Posting weiter oben bezieht. Wenn du die Bilder nicht mehr aus der Wartungskategorie entfernst, habe ich nichts dagegen, wenn du sie in die Schwarz-weiß-Kategorie einsortierst. Wie sinnvoll das ist, darüber mag man streiten. Ich gehe jedoch nach wie vor davon aus, dass niemand gezielt nach Schwarz-weiß-Bildern aus Deutschland suchen wird und die Kategorie daher eher sinnfrei ist. Angenommen, wir würden die 80.000 Bundesarchivbilder per Bot in die s/w-Kategorie einordnen, was wäre damit gewonnen, was genau der Nutzen? Jede gute Einsortierung einzelner Bilder wäre dagegen hilfreich, genau da würde Dein Engagement helfen, Kollege Frank. Nichts für ungut und frdl. Grüße

Also erstens hab ich ja schon aufgehört. Aber zweitens wiederhole ich: Wenn keine Bilder in die s/w-Kategorie einsortiert werden sollen, dann sollten wir auch die Kategorie löschen! Also schlagt Euch doch bitte mit denen rum, die diese und ähnliche Kategorien einführen, und weniger mit denen, die sie benutzen. Ich denke, Ihr haut den Falschen. Falls Ihr ne Ecke findet, wo man über Sinn und Unsinn dieser Kategorie reden kann, dann teilt mir das doch bitte mit; mich würd ja schon interessieren, wer da wie argumentiert; und mir selbst fiele da sicher auch noch das Eine oder Andere ein. gruß, fcm. --Frank C. Vielen Dank für die Korrektur. Keine Ahnung, was da passiert ist. Ich habe damals eine ganze Menge Bilder quasi gleichzeitig mit "Cat-a-lot mode" in eine Kategorie "kopiert". Habe diese Kategorie bei dem angesprochenen Bild jetzt nochmal zu Fuß hinzugefügt.

Hi Philkon!

Maybe you are the photograph and - in some sense - also the owner of the photos, but you are not the owner of the datasets in Wikimedia Commons and not the owner of the metadata in these datasets. The categories are not your private property; neither the categories nor the categorization of the photos. Please discuss the sense and nonsense of the categories e.g. here. But for the moment obviously the community of Wikimedia Commons has the opinion, that categories like Actresses and Actors should be used. If a photo shows a woman that is also actor, then I have to use the most specific category I know, and that is Actresses. As far as I know this is the official point of view of this community. So, why should I not change your photos?

Because I find making gender references, when gender is not a vital issue, to be offensive. I do not want photos I have taken to be marked in what I find to be an inappropriate manner.

I checked the section you mentioned above and neither the category of Actor or Actress are mentioned. What makes you think gender assignments is the official policy of Wikipedia? Please provide an official reference.

If this, in deed, the official policy of Wikipedia, I will remove all of my photos and no longer participate.

Two issues:

  • When I say "about Overcategorization you may read something here", then I mean "about Overcategorization you may read something here" and I do not mean "about Actor and Actress you may read something here". If I would have said "about Actor and Actress you may read something here", then I would have written "about Actor and Actress you may read something here". So I mean, You have to read what I write before You answer!
  • You can take the use of thousands of categorizations as "Actresses" as "the official policy of Wikipedia". And I repeat: You are not alone. This is the work of a community, and You are only one member of this community. And the categories are not Your categories, and the categorizations are not (only) Your categorizations!
Concerning gender assignments You may e.g. also have a look on Category:People by gender.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
