Merge[edit]

I prefer the layout and languange selection of the Wikipedia template but obviously the title of this one. The Haz talk 18:04, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done, all missing translations moved as is adding the logo=no feature where it didn't exist. –Be..anyone (talk) 14:07, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Merge sister screenshots[edit]

Apparently the merge from Wikipedia-screenshot to Wikimedia-screenshot caused no havoc. So far nobody missed one lost deprecated pedia lang= parameter not existing on the media version, and another 1= parameter only existing in the pedia /doc, not in the code for pedia or media.
After pedia the smaller sisters could be also redirected to media to get one pool of translations (various pedia languages were missing for media, fixed by simple moves.) In essence this means that there would be only one wikimedia screenshot category for all screenshots for the redirected sisters, and only one Wikimedia logo shown (or hidden by logo=no). –Be..anyone (talk) 14:05, 6 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OK, that's a good merge. I propose to create a parameter to choose the appropriate subcategory. Fore example param {wiki} = wikipedia, commons, wiktionary... --Rezonansowy (talk) 15:12, 26 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Be..anyone and Varnent: There's also a second template – Meta-Wiki-screenshot. It has a better and more informative layout and is suggested to being merged into this template as well. I  Support this. I made a sandbox of the new version of this layout – Template:Wikimedia-screenshot/layout/sandbox – what do you think? --Rezonansowy (talk) 15:52, 26 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Rezonansowy: I could see the logic in merging this template in as well. --Varnent (talk)(COI) 17:06, 26 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Have fun, I only vaguely recall that juggling with all those translations was a PITA. –Be..anyone 💩 19:08, 14 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Needs Template:Self "you may choose the license of your choice" clause[edit]

This template is causing issues with ambiguity with free screenshots that portray GPL'd software. The current template makes it easy to believe both the GFDL and CC BY-SA 3.0 license conditions must be followed simultaneously, though that is not the case. 80.221.159.67 03:02, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Taking a standpoint that full page screenshots of most Wikimedia projects are derivative works of MediaWiki, the licenses seem to be incompatible with the GPL. An example: Should File:English Wikipedia screenshot.png have permission notices for both MediaWiki and Wikimedia? 80.221.159.67 12:44, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe the same discussion: Category talk:Wikimedia screenshots. --W like wiki (talk) 23:21, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly,

is stupid. It might be something like {{iffile|{}}} or so. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:18, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This template here and the merged Template:Wiktionary-screenshot (source: Template:Wikimedia-screenshot) do automatic categorisation of all medias under Category:Wikimedia screenshots. Thats why moving an element to a subcategory is not possible, just coping. This allready leads to an overfilled Category:Wikimedia screenshots (>10.000 elements). --W like wiki (talk) 01:21, 26 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I am experiencing this problem and came here to post. There are these and other categories which all use this template. This template should not automatically apply the top level category.

I am not sure that this escalates to a problem worth making an Edit request over. This template is a problem but it would be worse to have no category, which might happen otherwise. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:40, 9 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sysops can’t get that a change along the lines of Revision of Template:Wiktionary-screenshot is warranted. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 08:25, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Something about MediaWiki.org[edit]

I must point that, per mw:Project:PD_help, all the mw.org Help: namespace pages are under Public Domain, but they don't use CC-0, just saying Public Domain. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 14:40, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Liuxinyu970226 Actually, a reference to CC0 was added in mw:Special:Diff/850923 (27 December 2013). But even in the current version of that page, there is still some confusion about the definition of public domain:
PD help pages should contain only public-domain screenshots; avoid any logos from being included in screenshots, and upload them to Commons with MediaWiki screenshot (for GPL), and CC-zero (for the user's work) license templates.
GPL-licensed work is not in the public domain! Brianjd (talk) 06:40, 4 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Which licenses apply to each file?[edit]

In #Needs Template:Self "you may choose the license of your choice" clause, an anonymous user mentioned that the use of multiple license templates on this page is ambiguous. Unfortunately, the solution suggested there is incorrect.

In general, Wikimedia screenshots contain multiple parts (MediaWiki and the project’s contents), which are released under different licenses. A user who uses the whole screenshot must comply with all the licenses; they cannot choose just one.

Sometimes, not all parts are present. For example, You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia0.jpg depicts the project’s contents but does not depict any copyrightable part of MediaWiki. In this case, a user only needs to comply with one license: CC BY-SA 3.0.

But this template contains only a generic notice, which refers to three different (and mutually incompatible) licenses, with no clarification on which apply to each file. There should be parameters to display the appropriate license notice(s) for each file.

This template really needs a more general cleanup too. It is too long and too complex and contains this outdated information: the actual contents of Wikipedia are licensed under the GFDL. Brianjd (talk) 07:00, 4 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Creative Commons license version[edit]

In its current version, the template contains a confusing mixture of references to CC BY-SA 3.0 and 4.0. The main text says that Wikimedia projects … are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 license”, and Template:Wikimedia-screenshot/doc says that This template will add CC BY-SA 3.0 … license, but the actual license block below is , not . Should the text and documentation be updated to also refer to the 4.0 version, or are further changes needed? (CC Red-tailed hawk, who made the change to Template:Wikimedia-screenshot/layout, and also Jeff G. and DreamerBlue, who made and reverted the same edit a few years ago respectively. I didn’t follow the recent terms of use update closely, so I don’t know how exactly the license change was implemented.) Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 15:32, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

3.0 works are can be re-licensed under 4.0 terms, but not vice-versa, so I had changed it to 4.0. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 03:41, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The first template box still says the used license is CC BY-SA 3.0, although since 2021, Wikimedia uses the CC BY-SA 4.0 license for contents licensed under the CC BY-SA license (that is, most wikis' contents, except for Wikinews (using CC BY) and Wikidata's main, lexeme, property and EntitySchema namespaces (using CC0, i. e. contents there being in the public domain)). Alfa-ketosav (talk) 08:55, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What page on Commons should this page link to? It currently links to Commons:Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. Jonesey95 (talk) 14:51, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we have a local page with the text for the CC-BY-SA-4.0 license. At Commons:CC-BY-SA we link to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode directly. Or we could link to w:Wikipedia:Text of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. However, unless I'm missing something, the switch to from CC-BY-SA-3.0 to CC-BY-SA-4.0 was done on June 1st, 2023 and not in August 2021 as claimed above. In addition, we should add structured data in the Commons' file namespace in the exception list, since these are available under the Creative Commons CC0 License (per the footer warning). —MarcoAurelio 14:01, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I'm happy to make the requested adjustments once there is a page to link to. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:29, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request (cat)[edit]

edit request Remove , either without replacement, or replace by making that category hidden, with a note to be categorised by "Template:Wikimedia-screenshot" only , and being a subcategory of . Reasons are elaborated on above. Taylor 49 (talk) 16:22, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Attempted paraphrase:
Remove Category:Wikimedia screenshots from this template, either without replacement, or replace by a new hidden category Category:All wikimedia screenshots with a note on that latter category: "To place images in this category, use Wikimedia-screenshot. Do not add this category explicitly to images," and make Category:Wikimedia screenshots a subcategory of Category:All wikimedia screenshots.

@Taylor 49: have I understood you correctly? - Jmabel ! talk 01:47, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: Almost ... just vice-versa: make Category:All wikimedia screenshots a subcategory of Category:Wikimedia screenshots. Taylor 49 (talk) 17:11, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done, though I'm not sure if it will affect files unless they are edited or purged. - Jmabel ! talk 17:43, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Capitalized differently: Category:All Wikimedia screenshots, since Wikimedia is a proper noun. - Jmabel ! talk 17:44, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: Most likely it will, but it can take weeks on this huge wiki running in "miserable mode". If not, I will find a way to purge them all. Taylor 49 (talk) 19:43, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was wrong. :-( A few hours have elapsed, and most of the images have jumped over into the new category. :-) I have already begun with the diffusion work. Taylor 49 (talk) 21:27, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how to do this, but could every version of this template have the "3.0" part changed to "4.0"? Many incorrectly state that most wikis use 3.0. Aaron Liu (talk) 19:27, 28 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Aaron Liu We will have to add a new parameter for the date of the screenshot, as old unmodified contributions have not been relicensed. Just changing the template would be incorrect. AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 17:35, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
1. Well, 20 minutes before you replied, NintendoFan did it to /en anyway
2. It's already incorrect, the least we can do rn is to make it less incorrect by changing them to 4.0 before adding a date Aaron Liu (talk) 21:37, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
