Categorization

Does anybody believe this should categorize into "Photographs taken on {}"? There are already quite many such categories, and it would save at least me some time when uploading my own works. I am not sure I'm good enough at template syntax to do this, but I might try if there are no objections. darkweasel94 20:04, 30 April 2014 (UTC)

This is no problem. The question is if there is really the need for such categories. I'm not really convinced by that --D-Kuru (talk) 08:00, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
The template is a good idea! The automatical categorisation to the series "Photographs taken on YYYY-MM-DD" too! (Cat.) It could help to avoid wrong tagged photos: So it is clear, that the photographer tells us the moment of the event (for Wikinews, or WP-articles) or state (eg: of a tree in spring) on that day, not the upload-day, transfer from flickr or wikipedia-projects. And it should be possible to correct a wrong EXIF-date (parameter to tell that?). @D-Kuru: Not in every case it is possible, or a good idea to tell more than the month or year the photo is taken. But for transparency in an archive, and to help wikipedia-authors in history articles or upgoing events, the "Taken on" information may be useful to find by categories: Photographs by date is not realy full developed – and included in Commons-Main-page or a subpage. And there are still so many photos without EXIF-information (from smart-phones, more and more), and the information in the description-page is not really clear! If you look in Category:April 2014 photographs, when spring is developing in the northern hemisphere, you can see what could be possible with such categories: Is spring earlier than the year before? The blossom-sequence of a tree or flower? Next step could be gallery-pages on basis of that "day-categories": for a sequence of days (event), for important days with many photos (easter, 1 May), or the next months after April 2014 ... Or: Opening ceremony or closing ceremony? The "taken on"-category helps to sort, or correct wrong sorted photos(!) – without the "day"-information all that is difficult or not possible!
Question: Should the template been recomended in upload-procedures for photographers, especially if the EXIF-data is missing? --LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 02:12, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
For the documentation-page: "Add Template:Invalid EXIF date if necessary." ???
You have described the goals of this template much better, than I did above, D-Kuru! And (German): Wie und wo kann der Text in Template:Taken on/doc übersetzt werden? --LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 03:31, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
I know what the template does - I created it.
I'm not sure if there is really that much of a need for a category photographs by date. It's maybe a better idea to include such a feature for the general search.
It's no problem if there is no day or month data. If I would create a category it would look somwhat like this:
  • HEAD CATEGORY:
    • Files taken by year
      • Files taken in 2014
        • Files taken in 2014-01
          • Files taken on 2014-01-01
      • Files taken in 2013
If there is the full date info, they go into the right category. If there is no day info, they stay in the month category (eg. "Files taken in 2014-01"). If they only have the year the will be in the correct year category. If there is no information they do not get any category.
Autotranslate can be used to autotranslate the doc file - when I have some more free time I cvan care about that.
--D-Kuru (talk) 16:13, 4 May 2014 (UTC)
  • "maybe a better idea to include such a feature for the general search" -- mediawiki's search function has no useful capacity for this, at present; at least nothing that is easy-to-use & accessible to end-users. if we had a better search-capability, we would not need most wmc "categories"; we could use hashtags or some such, instead... As there haven't been any objections, ✓ Done, I hope I didn't break it. darkweasel94 17:55, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Does anyone think we could merge this with Template:Taken in? We could accomplish this by starting a new Template:Taken, and remove the in/on marker, such that the dates would read Taken 2007 October 24 instead of Taken on 2007 October 24. The language is just a touch clumsier, but I think the price is worth the cost.

I'm not sure if that would work in every language though. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 19:12, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

The two templates should be really merged. However, the template name should express that the template is designated for "when-taken" specification, not for "where" or "how" or "by what" or "by who" was the photo taken. The template name "taken" is less specific. Cann't it to cause some unclarity? --ŠJů (talk) 21:03, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps Date taken could clarify that. I'm not a huge fan of the merging though, although I can't really say why. darkweasel94 21:44, 2 June 2014 (UTC)
If you really want to merge both templates, exemplary files should be linked in the documentation for new photographers! Maybe it is better to have 3 different, but similar templates for photos, videos and sound files? Date of photo taken, Date of video taken, Date of sound file taken? At present, single videos, sounds or maps are sorted in the day-category, not in the "Photographs taken on YYYY-MM-DD"-category, or in subcategories of a day, month or year. Please make a test and show the consequences, before you merge. --LudwigSebastianMicheler (talk) 02:22, 3 June 2014 (UTC)
From the beginning may plan was to
a) make the template as easy-to-use. So I just madeit an auto lang switch and used ISOdate for the rest
b) let the template detect if you have entered eg. 2014-09-15 or 2014-09 or just 2014 and then auto select the right part of it. I just was never good enough to code the template that way...
@ Magog the Ogre: "not sure if that would work in every language": In german it doesn't.
--D-Kuru (talk) 19:20, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
Why not use 2007 October 24 (date taken) instead? This should not cause any grammar problems and work in every language (24. Oktober 2007 (Aufnahme), …).    FDMS  4    08:23, 19 April 2015 (UTC)

Time

The template should work correctly also with date+time entry in ISO format, i.e. extract the date from the date+time entry. --ŠJů (talk) 20:27, 17 April 2015 (UTC)

I removed the time from the date using Trunc to 10 character. However, the categorization is not functional for more complicated data as Other date etc. --ŠJů (talk) 21:20, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

Taken on Template; No countries

One problem I've been having with the use of the "Taken on" template, is that you can't move that category to specific countries. I've found many pictures that could be moved to "United States photographs taken on "Year-Day-Month," as well as "Austria photographs taken on "Year-Day-Month," "Germany photographs taken on "Year-Day-Month," etcetera, if only the template didn't exist. I've had to resort to either adding semi-duplicate categories, or just leaving them alone, despite the fact that they really should be moved. One notable editor has been adding the template to many of mine, and I really wouldn't have a problem with it if this issue could be dealt with. ----DanTD (talk) 17:06, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Maybe the "Taken on" -template could be added second parameter for country (or location in general) so that 2017-09-29 would add the photograph to "United States photographs taken on 2017-09-29". And if there would be later a need for photographs taken in Minnesota, it would be easy to just change the location parameter. In case location has not been said, the template would place the photograph in the general taken on -category. --Estormiz (talk) 05:48, 29 September 2017 (UTC)
I just tried that, and so far, it hasn't worked. I take it this feature doesn't exist yet. ----DanTD (talk) 00:30, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
I am not confident enough for changing this template (which is very widely used) myself as it should be added nested if-functions. Maybe someone with more experience could add the feature? Estormiz (talk) 09:00, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
I came here to make this exact same suggestion and it doesn't seem like there has been any opposition to this in the previous 2 months since the suggestion was made. Is there anyone with some template hacking skills who could make this happen? TommyG (talk) 14:45, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
I have made an example here User:TommyG/Taken on. This works for when date is set, cat=no is set, location is set, but doesn't work when location=Somewhere is set at the same time as cat=no is set. Maybe someone can see my mistake (and probably optimise the code a bit) TommyG (talk) 15:23, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
I'd like to know how you get them to work, and if you really have to add your screen name in order to make it work. ----DanTD (talk) 18:08, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
I never got them to work properly and kind of forgot about it. The intention is obviously to replace the current template with the content of User:TommyG/Taken on but before I can do that, I need the template to work as intended. TommyG (talk) 21:08, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
It did actually work, it was just the file was categorised manually as well, so cat=no didn't make any difference. Have updated the template and the docs. TommyG (talk) 21:46, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
I just tried it, and it worked on everything except those with the "According to EXIF data" templates. Granted, I had to do it manually, but I'm okay with that. ----DanTD (talk) 20:35, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Addition of colon

I think the addition of the colon by The RedBurn does not make this template better, for three reasons:

  1. This template is for adding a "Photographs by Date" category. If an approximate date is supplied to this template, it will not generate a correct category
  2. Some of the translations of "taken on", such as ja, already have a colon (this should probably be fixed)
  3. This template is used in the |Date= field of the Information template. There is an colon already implied with the template: |Date=2006 would be rendered as English prose as "Date: 2006". Adding a colon makes two colons in a phrase, "Date: Taken on: 2006".

I am going to revert the colon, but we can discuss further. — hike395 (talk) 07:15, 17 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi hike395, thank you for the message.
While trying to find a solution, I have noticed the message in the header of the documentation: Taken in should be used instead and there's even Other date to translate "circa". But for old photographs, Taken in can actually be avoided since it can't be confused with the upload date. The RedBurn (talk) 11:03, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
@The RedBurn: I have used Taken in for old photographs with approximate dates. Should we update the documentation to tell editors to avoid Taken on for approximate dates? I think that is better than modifying the template. — hike395 (talk) 13:01, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
The documentation already says: "If the exact date is not known, use the Taken in template." I don't see why it needs updating. darkweasel94 17:22, 17 January 2018 (UTC)
You're seeing the documentation after I updated it. — hike395 (talk) 01:35, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

German language interface

Problem with the template:
1. If only the month is fixed as the date of the shot, it incorrectly indicates in German: Aufgenommen am März 1927 (instead of correct: Aufgenommen im März 1927 )
2. For such dated photos, a category Photographs taken on 1927-03-01 is automatically created, which is also wrong.
See the examples Fred Hamel, Rita Kurzmann, Sem Dresden or Heinrich v. Kralik
-- Walter Anton (talk) 05:11, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

In cases where the exact date is unknown but the month is known, people are supposed to use Taken in, not this template. (After all, "taken on March 1927" is wrong in English too.) Tokfo (talk) 05:57, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Currently video categories are incorrect (see Category:Videos of 2012 by country for example). Can somebody please change: | video = to | video =

new argument

Edit request Please add after the date {{#if: {EXIF} | (according to EXIF data) | }} to make full use of the the date/location entry issues outlined at Category:Pages transcluding "Template:Exif data" with "location". | {{ISOdate| {} }} {{#if: {EXIF} | () | }}
with this code, currently all uses of Taken on say "According to EXIF data". Instead, the code should read

Problems of parameter location

Setting location would automatically add some categories. I think the templates should be reengineered to add tracking maintenance cats when those autocats do not exist. For example, it's wrong when a user sets a video's location to United States (special:diff/335829316) or US, because our cat is Videos of YYYY from the United States. Either a bot should correct all these irregular usage (either by correcting the location, or by setting cat=no), or we use some ifexist logic to check automatically added cats and when they dont exist add a tracking cat, so that humans correct them by hand.--Roy17 (talk) 14:01, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

When country subcategories don't exist...

Hi all. Would someone be able to set the template to gracefully fall back on parent categories when the subcategories for specific countries don't exist? Right now, the template tries to force a file into country subcategories when "location" is defined, even if that subcategory doesn't exist, which is not ideal. Huntster (t @ c) 01:40, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Which country sub-categories don't exist, and can't the non-existent country subcategories simply be created? On another issue, I just started manually adding some from July 13, 2016 that were taken of a museum of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, and I have a lot more to go. I'm surprised nobody else has moved them to the Poland subcat. ----DanTD (talk) 15:55, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

FkMohr, it seems the template was designed that way on purpose, probably to prompt people to create those categories as needed. From what I can tell, everything is working normally. It is trying to place the PDF in "country year texts" category, and since no day-level categories exist for pdfs/texts, it places the file into the overall day category. Because cat, location and source are named parameters, so it needs to be . This can probably be modified in the template code to work with your example too. Just got to make sure it's backwards compatible. TommyG (talk) 06:10, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
