Problem

This problem was aired on Multichills user page, and I am copying her the discussion in full. I would not presume to alter a template unless there was a good reason, and I had the support of a more senior editor.

Je n'ai pas une connaissance suffisante de l'anglais pour comprendre le message laissé autrement que par un manque de catégorie(s) de documents déposés.
J'ai chercher une liste de catégories pour essayer de compléter les fiches des documents mais je n'y arrive pas ou ne trouve que des pages en anglais et le même problème se pose. Je travaille uniquement sur Wikiversity française qui oblige à mettre les documents utilisés sur Commons pour pouvoir les incorporer dans les leçons. Dans cette Wikiversité française il y a des responsables qui corrigent et/ou complètent les documents pour qu'ils s'inscrivent complètement dans la Wikiversité : n'y a t'il pas dans Commons des équivalents qui seraient capables dans un premier temps de mettre des catégories pour certains de mes documents ? Je pourrais ensuite voir comment cela se fait et ensuite je pourrais (peut-être) appliquer à tous mes documents placés dans Commons

I have read the message that was left on H'arnet talk page and I understand completely the point he is making. I am a native speaker of English and taught for 30 years in a secondary school, and can confirm that the level of English needed to understand the message is higher than is needed to enter an English University. Technically it is perfect, but above the heads of most of the population. I hope by discussing it here we can get the template changed in a positive way.

This is what it says:

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

So how can this be improved. There are three ways

1. target the recipient
2. limit the vocabulary
3. eliminate sentences with complex grammatic structures and replace them with simple sentences. Put the subject first, use active rather than passive, remove words like can, should, must where possible.

So how may it look.

To add an image to a category, add the following code to the end of the page.

So this is targetted at a editor who just learning about categories. Reluctantly, we must miss out the invitation to join the categorisation team- and we can't at this stage ask them to geotag the image. The new text is taken from the Commons:Categories page, but simplified a little.

Thanks for you message ClemRutter. My bot just uses the standard template located at {{Please link images/en}}. You suggestions probably make it a lot easier for starting users. Do you feel like changing the template? Multichill (talk) 12:44, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

I think your bot should use a fork of this template so it's easier to improve and customize it for the bot. The message should be framed differently if it's used by a bot or a human. Here's my suggested rewording of the message if sent by CategorizationBot:

Thanks a lot for contributing to Wikimedia Commons. This is a friendly one-time message from CategorizationBot, a robot developed by the Wikimedia Commons community.

Again, the main template could adopt some of these changes, but there should IMO be some specificity when the message is left by a bot. I realize there's a balance to strike between formal messages and Sirius Cybernetics Corporation style personalization, but IMO our current messages trend too far towards the cold and unfriendly side of the continuum.--Eloquence (talk) 19:51, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Categories as random hashtags?

{{Editprotected}} Unfortunately, this template tempts users to use categories as accidental hashtags, as they are accustomed from Facebook, Twitter or non-wiki gallery projects. The words "structure" or "tree" are absolutely missing in the text of the template. Nothing about the modular principle of categorization. Also a guidance to check the real content and context of the target category (using the category link) and to seek the right category in the real category tree is quite missing. The "autocomplete" function suggesting completion of randomly estimated words is too insufficient for correct and intelligent categorization.

That's a also caused by premature enforcing of UploadWizard as the default upload interface without implementing HotCat functions which allow to go through the category tree up or down intuitively in the category field of the upload form. Regrettably, for serveral years, nobody is willig and able to rectify this fail. Instead it, more and more useful and needful tools become dead due the imprudent software policy of Wikimedia Foundation. --ŠJů (talk) 20:26, 23 July 2018 (UTC)
