Broken link[edit]

I think the link to Wikimedia Tool Labs in this template doesn't work. Example link --Stiegenaufgang (talk) 14:26, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata in 2014[edit]

In August 2014, this template is used in some 800 pages on Commons. At this point in time, linking to Wikidata is all that can be done, but before of the end of 2014 it should be possible on Commons (as it is on Wikipedia) to use data and infoboxes based on Wikidata, so this template will perhaps no longer be needed. --LA2 (talk) 09:08, 10 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple links[edit]

The documentation suggests multiple instances for one Commons page.

I think that's not a good idea, and we should only link to the single most specific item.

In the example given, (Orogeny, List of orogenies, Category:Orogeny), the three items are linked to each other within Wikidata; we only need to link to the first. Andy Mabbett (talk) 10:53, 15 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The core problem is that the item is defined by the item. The item category at Commons match primarily the Wikipedia article about that item, but eventually also the Wikipedia category (if exists) of identic item. List article is a special type of article, which is a manually created analogy (equivalent) of category, in essence (thus, a special type of "main article" of the category, besides the "item definition" article). That's why one category of Commons can match up to 3 different pages of Wikipedia.
Regrettably, an essential analysis of these relations was not reflected in time, before structuring and active service of Wikidata. This template is only a patch which try to compensate deficiencies of Wikidata functionality.
The three Q-codes of Wikidata related to identic item can have defined their mutual relations but such links are not really functional and usable yet (and hardly will be sometimes at all). --ŠJů (talk) 01:26, 19 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Translations?[edit]

can someone make this template translatable? i don't know how it is best to do and don't want to make errors. Holger1959 (talk) 07:08, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Holger1959, can you follow this COM:Localisation #Autotranslate?User: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)  13:10, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Perhelion: i have translated some pages when there was a link for translation, either with the special interface or with /de subpages. But here i don't find the "starting point". when i go to Template:On_Wikidata/de and use preview there is nothing useful.
To answer your question: no, not really, because all the template options are confusing for me too much, and i don't know with what i have start (the infos in Template:Autotranslate also don't help me). Holger1959 (talk) 13:26, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
:-).User: Perhelion (Commons: = crap?)  14:41, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Perhelion and Brackenheim: danke! Holger1959 (talk) 17:04, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Gern geschehen ;-) Wollte Dir aber nicht Deine Arbeit wegnehmen... Grüße, --Brackenheim (talk) 17:47, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Brackenheim: ne, schon super so :) Holger1959 (talk) 17:48, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

P373[edit]

Shouldn't this pull from P373 automatically (without parameters) when on a Commons category page? czar 14:58, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

adding location[edit]

I always use it together with the location template ([1]) The wikidata template could output the location as well, if coordinates are available. -- DerFussi 20:10, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@DerFussi: Why the use of parameter 2?    FDMS  4    19:42, 13 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Merge with Template:Authority control[edit]

Can we merge Template:On Wikidata and Template:Authority_control? Template:Authority_control has been modified to display the Wikidata Qnumber. With a little bit of programming we can get it to display "Wikidata has entry Q123456789 with data related to this item." when there is ONLY a wikidata Qnumber available. See: Category:Hans Christoffer von Rohr which has both templates. This way if there are further AC identifiers added at Wikidata in the future they will display. RAN (talk) 02:36, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

 Support Very good idea! It is quite stupid that Template:PeopleByName sets both. --Marsupium (talk) 19:37, 28 January 2018 (UTC), 19:40, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
 Support — TintoMeches, 17:44, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
 Question Could we merge both into {{Wikidata Infobox}}? That template shows both sets of numbers, and goes further by showing other information from Wikidata. Or if we can have an option to change the formatting of this template, maybe we could auto-include it in that one in place of the current implementation (since I suspect this implementation is more efficient than the one I came up with for that template!). I've added that template to Category:Hans Christoffer von Rohr to demo how it currently works. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 23:32, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In that case {{Authority control}}, {{On Wikidata}} and {{Wikidata Infobox}} should all replaced by {{Wikidata person}} IMHO. It does a better job on people, is more mature, has superior layout, is better established. --Marsupium (talk) 00:31, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Marsupium: That would also work, and I've added it to the Hans Christoffer category as a comparison. Although that one doesn't seem to pick up the Wikidata ID automatically (although that's easily fixable), and it doesn't work so well in non-person cases (e.g., Category:Außenlager Annener Gußstahlwerk des KZ Buchenwald). Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:56, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Marsupium: @Mike Peel: I prefer template:Wikidata_person for instance_of=human in Wikidata, I have been switching my category entries too it. I am not sure what the best is for geographical entries, but we should merge the duplicate templates as discussed above. Is anyone interested in having template:Wikidata_person display a few common external links pulled from Wikidata, like IMDB and IBDB or even Findagrave. There is a template in the Russian Wikipedia used in biographies that does just that. I like the way it looks. RAN (talk) 16:58, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is there anything that I can improve at {{Wikidata Infobox}} to convince you to use that instead? ;-) Feedback/suggestions are always welcome, see the talk page for the template where we're talking through a few things at the moment. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:24, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Can those functions be incorporated into template:Wikidata_person and whatever the final merge of Template:On Wikidata and Template:Authority_control will be called? template:Wikidata_person already adds in the birth and death categories. RAN (talk) 01:03, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): {{Interwiki from wikidata}} is already incorporated in {{Wikidata Infobox}}. I'm working on the rest. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 01:24, 17 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
