I think this is not required today at all. Can you share any existing example? I think it could also be written as:

When the new 5-digit zip codes had been introduced in 1993 the suburb info has in fact become redundant because the triple zipcode-streetname-housenumber is unambiguous. A lot of streets have had to be renamed for to eliminate disambiguations. So the suburb info can be treated as optional. --Achim (talk) 09:31, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@XRay, Eatcha, Krd, Achim55, and Green Giant: I support the request strongly. At least in Central Europe, a name of the "municipal part" (část obce, Ortsteil) is an integral part of the adress - maybe more essential than the street name (some municipalities have not named streets but all municipalities and cities have named their conscription municipal parts). Where conscription numbers are used as the basic system of house numbering, house numbers are complementary to the name of the municipal part (which is a quarter or a village). When one street in the city crosses more quarters, the street name with the conscription number may be not unique as the adress, the quarter name is necessary. One building can have more adresses (a corner building, a block building or a building with the back facade can be assigned to two or more streets or squares, one building can have more entries with different adresses) but just the conscription number with the quarter name define the building itself unambiguously. As regards output formats, quarter name is usually stated past the city name or municipality name, using a hyphen or a dash. If the municipality have not named streets, the name of the municipal part (a village) is located instead of the street name. Btw., in postal adresses, the name (location) of the post office is more relevant than name of the municipality.

Using the suburb is very recommended. And sorry, the suburb isn't redundant with the 5-digit zipcode. There is a recommendation by the Deutsche Post: [2]. Cite: "Zwischen Straße und Ort steht keine Leerzeile. Eine Ortsteilbezeichnung ist zwischen Name und Straßenbezeichnung anzugeben." In English: "There is no empty line between street and town. A suburb name must be given between the name and street name." The view of postal delivery and the municipal boundaries is different. The Deutsche Post has not coordinated with the municipalities. It often fits, but not always. The suburb should be optional, but it should be possible. So I support ŠJů too. --XRay talk 04:21, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For Czechia, the standard format of adress outputs is defined by the § 6 of the Ordinance 359/2011 Sb., about the Basic Register of Territorial Identification, Adresses and Immovable Properties:
a) the first line shall state the name of the street, the conscription or registration number and the orientation number, including the appendix; the orientation number shall be given after the conscription number and separated by a slash,
b) the second line shall state the name of the part of the municipality, in Prague the name of the cadastral area,
c) in the third line, the postal code and the name of the municipality shall be stated; in Prague, the number of the city district shall be given after the name of the municipality.
If it is an address place in an unnamed street, the first line according to letter a) is not stated and the conscription or registration number is given after the name of the part of the municipality.
Name of the part of the municipality according to letter b) shall be stated only if it is not identical with the name of the municipality. If the name of the part of the municipality or the name of the street is not stated, the text "č.p." shall precede the conscription number. The registration number is always preceded by the text "č.ev.".

I assume that each country has its own standard for writing addresses, either precisely defined in this way or at least customary. The Commons template should be as compatible as possible with all standards of various countries. The output can be edited later, but above all, the template should enable to input all the necessary data with appropriate unambiguous and unmistakable names. --ŠJů (talk) 04:54, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would also like to add that as I see this template it should allow a reuser of the media to find the depicted building in the easiest possible way. Even if a specific information is redundant it can be used to assist some individual. And of course, something like this can be used as a "checksum" that helps to validate the address, ensuring that the user who has filled in the address did not make a typo, but actually intended to provide the address in question. ℺ Gone Postal (〠 ✉ • ✍ ⏿) 11:51, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Address format[edit]

IMO the reason may be an entry in {{ISO 3166-2/AU}}. It should be "Victoria (Australia)" instead of "Victoria". I fixed this, the link is OK now, but now the address contains "Victoria (Australia)" instead of "Australia". Please fix it. Thank you. --XRay talk 04:46, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@XRay: You were quite close. The only problem was that Victoria (Australia) is a redirect to Victoria, Australia, and {{City}} doesn’t handle redirects well (it could in theory, but probably that would use too many extra server resources for a template used on 2.3M+ pages). Conscription and orientation house numbers (CZ, SK)[edit]

The parameters description says about the paramater "Conscription number: "In some places like Czech republic, buildings have an official conscription numbering system, instead of or in addition of house numbers. If not available, this field can be left blank. For further reference see also the OSM project page for addresses"

This description is mistaken. In Czechia and Slovakia, conscription numbers (popisné číslo, súpisné číslo) are not some optional and additional system of numbering, but the basic system. The conscription numbers is complementary to the name of the "municipal part" ("část obce") and unique within its area. I.e. the name of the municipal part is an integral an logical part of the adress.

What is optional and additional in Czechia and Slovakia is a system of "orientation numbers" - these are used only in some larger cities or municipalites as the second house number, used past the slash (Národní 327/18) and this number os complementary to the name of the street or square. The system of orientation numbers is possible only in such municipalites which have named its streets and squares, but named streets don't imply automatically that orientation numbers are used. Even some larger cities (Zlín, Pardubice, Kladno) don't use orientation numbers.

Generally, every building should have just one conscription number, but can have more orientation numbers and adresses. E.g. the front side of the house can belong to another street than the back side of the same house, or a corner house can have two adresses, or two entries from the same street with two various orientation numbers, but with the same conscription number.

Czechia has another speciality. For some types of buildings (temporary buildings, recreational buildings), the so-called "registration number" (evidenční číslo) is used instead of the "conscription number". On the house, the number is distinguished usually by color or by additional text, or prefis (E-, 0-). In the written adress, it is distinguished by "ev. č." or "če." or with the prefix E or 0. Even some old houses or cottages are renumbered from their original conscription number to the "evidenční" number as they are no longer registered for permanent housing but only for recreation.

I.e., there are two types of house numbers in Slovakia and 3 types in Czechia. Conscription number is the most basic. "evidenční" numbers is it's alternative in some cases. Conscription number is unique for every building within its municipal part. "Orientation" number is an optional addition which can express position of the house toward named streets. One building can have more orientation numbers and can be assigned to more streets and have more adresses, but all adresses of the same buliding contain identical conscription number. --ŠJů (talk) 21:45, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request: Suburb[edit]

Sorry, I try to open this request again. (I've got the error message "Error in template * unknown parameter name (Template:Building address): 'Suburb'". So it's still not done.) For German addresses the suburb should be optional, but it should exist. Since our 5-digit Zipcodes some street names exist with the same zip code in different suburbs. Please see [3] (Brief adressieren – so ist es richtig/An eine Hausanschrift) too. The address within Germany has the form

Table tag missing when this template is used on Category pages[edit]

When this template is used on Category pages such as Category:Kasteel Montfoort, it begins with a ‎<tr> tag instead of a ‎<table> tag. This causes pages to be placed in Linter error categories.

I have suggested a simple fix at {{Building address/layout/sandbox}}, and I tested it at Special:ExpandTemplates. It appears to work as intended, inserting table tags only in Category space. Jonesey95 (talk) 00:55, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
