Registration number

The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage maintains a publically accessible database at buildingsofireland.ie where every object is referenced by its registration number. Registration numbers consists of eight decimal digits.

Registration numbers are most easily found using the Historic Environment Viewer provided by the Heritage Division. Either zoom into the map or type in the name of the location (preferably the name of the townland) in the search field (in the upper left corner of the screen). All objects of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage are marked by blue dots. The red dots refer to objects of the {{Archaeological Survey of Ireland}}. The dots can be clicked to or selected using the Query Data tool (the left-most tool listed in the toolbox in the upper right corner). Please do not forget to select the correct dataset: National Inventory of Architectural Heritage at the top of the query form. When records are found, they are listed in a small table. Example:

Table delivered by the Query Data tool
Reg. No Name Townland
30402306 Kylemore Abbey BELLEEK
30402307 Kylemore Abbey BELLEEK
30402308 Kylemore Abbey BELLEEK

The left column Reg No. delivers the registration number exactly as required.

Using the template

Here is an example that refers to the main record for Kylemore Abbey:

Two links are provided by the template. The first links to the Historic Environment Viewer. When you follow this link, it takes some time until the viewer opens and finally relocates to the given position. When the viewer was opened before in your browser, it will zoom in first to the last location you have been before the relocation to the object with the given registration number takes place. The second link, named Main record, directs you to the full description of the object with one or more photographs.

Translating this template to other languages

This multilingual template follows the design of autotranslated templates. To add another language, just copy {{NIAH/en}} to the variant with the corresponding ISO 639-3 code (or whatever is supported by {{Language}}) and adapt the text. The template gets three parameters:

Parameter Description
1 registration number, can be empty
2 weblink to the Historic Environment Viewer
3 weblink to the corresponding main record

Parameters 2 and 3 are only non-empty when parameter 1 is non-empty. You just need to adapt the parameters text and lang. Note that the text expansion provides different variants in dependence of whether the registration number was given or not. When you have done this, you should update {{NIAH/lang}} by replacing its contents with {{subst:lle}}.
