SMR number
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland maintains a database, named Sites and Monuments Record (SMR), where every object can be referenced by an identifier, called SMR number or short SMR No. The SMR number consists of following elements:
- two uppercase letters refering to the county, e.g. MA for County Mayo,
- three digits referencing to the number of the historic 6 Inch Ordnance Survey map, possibly suffixed by A or B in case of Ordnance Survey Sheets with corresponding inserts,
- a dash,
- three digits which identify a site or monument,
- three dashes or three more digits that identify an object within a group of objects at a site, and
- a final dash.
Example: MA033-001001- identifies the first object of the first group, located in sheet 33 of the 6 Inch Ordnance Survey Map, within County Mayo.
Within the series of Archaeological Inventories published by the Archaeological Survey of Ireland, the SMR number is given in a short form. If you lookup, for example, the famous Newgrange megalithic tomb in the Archaeological Inventory of County Meath (entry 50 on p. 18), you will find at the end of the entry SMR 19:45 on the left where the first number references the sheet and the second the site or object on that sheet. This can be extended to the full SMR number as described above by adding the two letters for the county (ME for Meath) and inserting the missing dashes: ME019-045----.
The SMR number is most easily to be found using the Historic Environment Viewer provided by the National Monuments Service. Either zoom into the map or type in the name of the location (preferably the name of the townland) in the search field (in the upper left corner of the screen). All objects of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland are marked by red dots. The blue dots refer to objects of the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage. The dots can be clicked to or selected using the Query Data tool (the tool with the looking glass listed in the toolbox in the upper right corner). When records are found, they are listed in the right column. Example:

Two links are provided by the template. The first links to the Historic Environment Viewer. When you follow this link, it takes some time until the viewer opens and finally relocates to the given position. When the viewer was opened before in your browser, it will zoom in first to the last location you have been before the relocation to the object with the given SMR number takes place. The second link, named Database record, takes advantage of the ArcGIS-API which is supported by the database and allows to retrieve a database record including its textual description (but without images) by its SMR number using the query method. Following parameters are required:

Translating this template to other languages
This multilingual template follows the design of autotranslated templates. To add another language, just copy {{Archaeological Survey of Ireland/en}} to the variant with the corresponding ISO 639-3 code (or whatever is supported by {{Language}}) and adapt the text. The template gets three parameters:

Parameters 2 and 3 are only non-empty when parameter 1 is non-empty. You just need to adapt the parameters text and lang. Note that the text expansion provides different variants in dependence of whether the SMR number was given or not. When you have done this, you should update {{Archaeological Survey of Ireland/lang}} by replacing its contents with {{subst:lle}}.
