Renaming

Is there a way of renaming images? The image:JVTowersI&II.jpg cannot be viewed properly in any wikipedia, I assume becasue the uploader used the & symbol. Is there a way simply to rename it or does it have to be uploaded again (and by whom)?--Dúnadan 16:55, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

There’s no way to rename the file. Please upload again and nominate the old file for deletion, possibly speedy deletion (because duplicate). — Richie 16:05, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
Reupload and tag the old image with {{Badname}} or {{Duplicate}}. -- Bryan (talk to me) 16:19, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
You may have noticed that on the English Wikipedia I replaced <!-- Commented out because image was deleted: [[Image:JVTowersI&II.jpg|thumb]] --> with <!-- Commented out because image was deleted: [[Image:JVTowersI&II.jpg|thumb=JVTowersI%26II.jpg]] -->, which works fine. There's no need to reupload and delete, you just need to use the thumb= syntax and replace the special character with its urlencoded form when placing it in an article. In the future, please take requests like this to Commons:Help desk or Commons:Village pump, as mentioned at the top of this page. --Para 16:42, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
It would be better practice to rename, rather than using a hack. It is a bad file name. --Fastfission 00:51, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
BTW there is no problem with ampersands. Periodically their thumbnails seem to break. They can be fixed by purging the image page usually. But there's no need to avoid them in general. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 10:08, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Freely reusable

I've changed the strapline to "a database of (number) freely reusable media files to which anyone can contribute" - the reusability of this stuff is, after all, quite a lot of the point. If not there, then there should I think be a link on the front page to Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. Switching the Featured pictures (etc) and Picture of the day (etc) panes

Since the Featured pictures etc pane has (virtually) fixed content whereas the Picture of the day etc pane may leave more or less unused space at its bottom, anyone else feel that switching these two panes' positions might distibute the page's weight more effectively...?  Thanks in advance for any thoughts, David Kernow (talk) 16:52, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

URGENT CHANGE TO HEADER BAR ON EVERY PAGE

(Sorry about the all caps.) Please update the Wikimedia Awards notice bar, to reflect the fact the submission page is now closed, will be open in an hour or two, and that the deadline will be extended? See foundation-l post. -- Zanimum 18:22, 4 August 2007 (UTC) (This was also posted on the Village pump.)

Is there someplace that we can provide a link to this on the main page, welcome page, and maybe the community portal? Meet our photographers showcases a selection of the highly skilled photographers who choose to use open content licenses and donate their work to the Wikimedia Commons. Each photographer on this page has contributed at least 10 Featured Pictures, which is quite a feat. It is intended to impress journalists rather than Wikimedians. --Digon3 talk 20:03, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Copyrighted images

Hi, I found that the user Felipealf87 has been uploading photographies from copyrighted sites, I don't have experience in these thing in Commons but in Wikipedia yes, what should I do, mark those copyrighted images or inform to the uploader. Language bar

Because the language bar has now got so large, on my screen the actual content doesn't start until half way down. Can we not reduce the langauge bar size in some way, for example by having a [show languages]/[hide] option, or simply by reducing the font size used? A large number of these languages are not actively used for very much (who reads Commons in Anglo Saxon?) --MichaelMaggs 15:43, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

Hi Juiced, The text you have just removed from the main page was discussed at Commons talk:Meet our photographers#Main Page. Could I suggest that you discuss on that page if you don't agree? regards --MichaelMaggs 09:03, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

The first aim of Wikimedia Commons is to provide media files for illustrating Wikipedia articles. So, in the main page, you expect to find links in order to access to the media files.
The Commons project organization regards the Community portal. In my opinion, it's irrelevant to advertise in the main page Commons:Meet our photographers, where a minority of Commons users is involved. --Juiced lemon 09:23, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
I think there is nothing wrong with using the main page to highlight our successes, and these photographers' contributions are certainly our successes. Commons:Meet our photographers has a clear criterion that everyone has the potential to meet, so it's not a closed club. I think if we, as a community, choose to highlight those excellent contributors as a way of saying a small thankyou (and demonstrating at the same time that we are a project that welcomes professional-quality work), then that's a great thing. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 10:23, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
See also Commons:Village_Pump#Advertising in the main page, Commons_talk:Meet_our_photographers#Main_Page, and User_talk:Juiced_lemon#Main_page.. can we pick one place to have this discussion? It's way too splattered now, IMHO. PS I 100% agree with pfctdayelise and wish we had more photogs on the list... ++Lar: t/c 10:29, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
I believe a link to this project indeed belongs on the mainpage. Not so much as a 'thank you' (even though that is certainly deserved), but as a way of showing new potential contributors that we do indeed have very good photographers contributing and sharing their work on Commons.Finn Rindahl 07:37, 2 September 2007 (UTC)
Yes, the whole idea of Commons:Meet our photographers, and Commons:Meet our illustrators is to promote the skills available here, in the commons, not as advertising for, or even promotion of, individuals (whether it achieves this aim may be a different matter :-). We are saying to the world here are examples of the calibre of our photographers. Commons goes beyond just providing fodder for wikipedia, it is a project in its own right. The analogy with the link to Picture of the Day is a good one. --Tony Wills 08:03, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

As an afterthought: Commons:Welcome is linked, but it's not obvious to what type of content the link goes. It should be more explicite, IMHO. -- Duesentrieb 13:28, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

I agree. But I also think the Community pages can be updated more often as well. This would mean translation coordination. But I think we can pull it off! Cary Bass demandez 13:30, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Link to Wikipedia from Main Page

Why does the link to Wikipedia (from the sister projects section) lead to the English Wikipedia and not to http://wikipedia.org/? Surely this is blatant favouritism? Anrie 18:58, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Because you're looking at the English version of the page. If you were to look at the French version, you would see that on that page it points to the French Wikipedia, and similarly for all other languages 144.32.58.192 18:55, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

User:Liberator1 and my new IP address

I have not been uploading images lately, and will sometime, but not now. I now officially admit that User:Liberator1 and w:simple:User:Liberator and User:Liberator1 (which I list the password to), are my sockpuppets. The commons account was a single purpose account: to defend the freedom of the oppressed without tarnishing my already torn apart reputation. Since my privacy has been compromised my ChinaMinions, vandals, and power-hungry admins Ryulong, Barliner and Arccher7, who have betrayed me on wiki, I decided to finally reveal the truth. A new wireless router was installed in my home for my mother's new laptop. And my IP address changed, so the Contributions/68.224.117.152 IP is me, same on en which I have been an asshole to w:User:Thatcher131, but have apologised and made good edits to w:Accra, Ghana removing a POV. The closest link to request pictures is at Commons:Community Portal. Anyone give any thought to putting a "request/suggest image" link on the main page? Well I don't want an edit war here, so let's discuss whether or not we should use this template on this page. Rappingwonders2 20:34, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

The protection template is not necessary here; it makes the page look horrible, and every project has its Main Page protected (and not one has a protection template). It's common knowledge, and the template is redundant. Please stop adding it. --Boricuæddie 20:35, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Honestly, why did you even create that template? I checked out your contribs... I know you're blocked on enwiki, but please don't cause trouble here too. →Rocket°°° 20:57, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Because we have it on Wikipedia. And I'm blocked for a bull crap reason that absolutely isn't true. Rappingwonders2 21:06, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
And how is the template redundant? It's better than a message box. Rappingwonders2 21:07, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
You don't have it on Wikipedia and it doesn't matter if you did. We just don't want any protection templates on the front page and it's not even worth discussing. →Rocket°°° 21:17, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
Really? Last time I checked, the template still exists on Wikipedia. Rappingwonders2 21:38, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
(ec) It is irrelevant. We don't want the template on the Main Page, and I don't want the template at all, because, firstly, protection templates are rarely used in the gallery/main namespace here, and, secondly, because, IMO, if we're going to tell people the page is protected, we might as well make sure they actually see it. Also, please note that the template you created is not the same as the Wikipedia version, because the one you created says, "This high-risk template or image included in one has been protected from editing to prevent vandalism". Note the failure to mention the main namespace. --Boricuæddie 21:49, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
"Nevermind. I thought you meant on the main page. →Rocket°°° 21:48, 10 February 2008 (UTC)

Add search box to the Main page

Hello, I created a script to add a search box to the main page. And now that our search is unbroken, it might be a good idea to enable it :) Try it on [2] (I know I should have made some extension instead of a hacking something with JS ;)) If it works on all browsers, I think we should enable it. -- Bryan (talk to me) 22:40, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Colour-of-the-bikeshed comment: It's rather *wide* on high resolutions, I would've preferred it sized to fit maybe on top of the right hand column? (On top of the FP and QI section.) Just a thought. I'm a little on the fence or not about whether it's a good idea: part of me thinks people should be awake enough to realise there is already a search box on the menu to the left, part of me *knows* they aren't. Anrie 07:28, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, it's quite large (I have a 22" monitor ;)), but I don't know whether it is a good idea to stick the search box entirely to the right or left. -- Bryan (talk to me) 09:55, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

It doesn't exactly look tidy on an 800-pixel-wide browser window either. (This could be an 800x600 pixel display of an old PC, an 800x480 pixel display of a portable device, or half of a 1600x1200 or 1600x1050 pixel monitor.) On Firefox under Windows XP, and on IE 7 under Windows XP, I get "a database of 2,596,663 freely usable" on one line and then "media files to which anyone can contribute" on the next line. What makes this look untidy is that when the next line flows below the search box, it gets centered to the right. Should we use a table instead of a float box for this? --Damian Yerrick () 23:03, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
