WLM latitude / longitude list[edit]

Hi, I used the latitude / longitude data available at Bhuvan (ISRO) to generate a CSV using a script. The repository is available here. I'll add a semi-automated way of updating this to Wikidata / Wikipedia. Pmlineditor (t · c · l) 10:38, 27 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It will be good if we can update Wikidata [1] -- Naveenpf (talk) 05:26, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

additional monuments in the competition[edit]

Hi,

It is mentioned as // This year, we are focusing on Archaeological Survey of India protected and state protected monuments. The full list of the monuments can be found here. Note the monument ID!// Is this list finalised or can we add some more monuments too? For example in Tamil wikipedia in collaboration with Tamil virtual Academy have uploaded articles about Temples under the supervision of Tamil Nadu government. There are about 10000+ Temples currently in ta wikipedia. Majority of them do not have pictures. Is it possible to include them too in wiki loves monuments? Because it seems most of the ASI monuments in India have been pictured already in commons. @Bodhisattwa: @Satdeep gill: -- Balaji (talk) 19:08, 17 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Balajijagadesh: , do you have any list of those monuments? If yes, can you share them with us. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 06:19, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bodhisattwa: the list of temples I told above can be found here. If required I can share the data in a spreadsheet too. I am not sure whether they strictly fall under the category "Monuments". But still atleast we may be able to filter them out I guess. Also all these temples are scattered throughout Tamil Nadu. Hence we can expect a better participation in Tamil Nadu from all districts. -- Balaji (talk) 17:17, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Balajijagadesh: , thanks for the list. We are very much interested to include these monuments in WLM, but we have one problem, i.e. the list is not in English and so the jury team will face difficulty while matching the image of a monument with the list provided. If it is possible to create English labels in Wikidata, at least for a part of the list, then it will not be a problem to include those monuments in the competition. Please let us know, if this is possible to some extent. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 18:51, 19 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bodhisattwa: Thanks for the considerate, accommodative and detailed reply. I ll try to create labels for the temples in English. There are 10k+ temples are there. So I think it would take a lot of volunteer time. Is the language problem a serious one? If it is only problem for the Jury then People from Tamil community like me are here to help the Jury members for deciding the pics. Or we can create a help task force for this regard. Kindly consider the alternatives in addition to transliteration of labels. Insights from @Thamizhpparithi Maari: @Ravidreams: , @Shanmugamp7: , @Info-farmer: would be helpful for alternate suggestions of how to take it forward. -- Balaji (talk) 01:20, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We can get and use Qnumbers of this category. Is it possible to get the pictures from this TN govt?--Info-farmer (talk) 03:24, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Adding many temple pictures will be really valuable and will help for creating valuable documentations for the community and culture.--Nan (talk) 04:53, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Balajijagadesh and Info-farmer: , the English language is not only for the judges, it is important also for the participants outside from Tamil Nadu. As this is a pan-Indian competition, the list should be open for all participants, to remain fair to all. One way to ease the process is to generate the Q numbers in a Google sheet and engage at least 10-12 volunteers to work on it, that would ease the process, I can help with that. Also, please be assured, that if you create English titles of at least 100 monuments from that list, we will be happy to announce them publicly, no problem with that. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 05:02, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please find the Google sheet with the Q numbers and Tamil name of the articles. Thanks. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 05:40, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Time line,pls. I try to fill the g.sheet--Info-farmer (talk) 07:46, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Info-farmer: , the competition starts on September 1, so, the list should be created at least on 31 August. No worry, add as many English labels as possible before the date and we will include them all. For next year, we will include the whole list, as I guess, it will be completed way before that. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 12:12, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bodhisattwa: Please dont restrict the date till 31st August. As the competition progresses we can continue adding new places for which labels are added. -- Balaji (talk) 13:41, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Have a look at this en.wiktionary. Is that transliteration enough? --Info-farmer (talk) 03:11, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Balajijagadesh and Info-farmer: , I have added the link pf the list of monuments in Tamil Wikipedia to the WLM event page. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 08:46, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bodhisattwa: Thanks for the update and including the list of temples from Tamil Nadu in the competition. Hope this creates some interest in the Tamil Community. -- Balaji (talk) 09:25, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks indeed.@Bodhisattwa: we will outreach but it takes time beyond this contest. @Balajijagadesh: the g-sheetseems good and i am happy with your efforts and will follow you like in Wikidata--Info-farmer (talk) 09:33, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Markup for translation[edit]

It looks like not all content is marked for translation in the main page for Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in India. If different sections are marked up for translation in small bits it would be easy to translate them and encourage local participation. -- Balaji (talk) 04:23, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ID's[edit]

Hi,

@Bodhisattwa and Naveenpf: When I look at the images being uploaded (great number, wow!) it strikes me that very few people actually add the monument ID. I would recommend to go over the workflow, and rethink it a little. Where could you clarify how people add the identifier? Could you use the links on English Wikipedia that remember the monument ID? I think if you would emphasize more how people can go to English Wikipedia, find the monument, and click on the '+' icon or the placeholder, that they would identify much better. That would make the images more useful, and make processing them much less painful. Effeietsanders (talk) 03:58, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Effeietsanders: , I have updated the Step 5 of How to participate section of the landing page and monuments section of the FAQ page. Please check if it is ok now. Also, I was uploading images using Monumental and I noticed that the tool does not add monument IDs from there also, so I have created an issue in github. Thanks, -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 06:42, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bodhisattwa: Thanks. I think linking them to this page is fine, that allows you to add translated instructions. The page on enwiki has a bit more noise. Thanks also for removing the ASI lists from the overview, that was a bit confusing. As for monumental, that may be because Monumental does not support India officially (as most monuments are not on Wikidata with geo-coordinates, that would be unlikely to happen soon?). Effeietsanders (talk) 06:48, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Effeietsanders: , I have linked them to this page. Regarding Wikidata, we are working on that here and may be we will complete all Monuments of National Importance and State Protected Monuments before next year's competition. Hopefully we can get all our monument data from Wikidata from next year and get the support from Monumental and other tools. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 06:59, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Effeietsanders, Bodhi has changed the workflow. Earlier workflow was this Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments in India/Get Started. I had asked Bodhi to add couple of lines from this page. "To find ASI Monument ID Take the case of list in Chennai, for Arsenal, the ASI Identifier is N-TN-C1." Bodhi was not interested in old pages. -- Naveenpf (talk) 08:01, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, and the new page looks definitely pretty :) But it's a wiki, so luckily we can be both bold and perfectionist, and keep iterating the page. If you see more possibilities for a clearer workflow, I'm confident that's welcome to learn.
I am a little confused what the status is of the list in Tamil Nadu. It looks like the result of some query on Wikidata, but the parameters why this would constitute 'monuments' is a bit unclear. Effeietsanders (talk) 08:22, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Naveenpf: , Sorry, I missed your message. Please do not misunderstand me. I had to change the landing page of monument list to accommodate the Tamil non-ASI monuments, which was requested by Tamil community. @Effeietsanders: , the request from Tamil community and discussion to include the monuments in Tamil Nadu is here. These are old monuments, mainly temples, not protected by ASI but catalogued by Tamil Virtual Academy. The Tamil community has added all the monuments, around 12,000 in number, in Wikidata previously. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 19:45, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Other monuments not in the list[edit]

What about those monuments which are not on your competiton list??

Should add some unknown monuments apart from what you all added to your list because there are some monuments which are historic established on 996 and much more Sadia afreen 15 (talk) 15:04, 19 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Sadia afreen 15: , I completely agree with you, that, India has so many monuments and heritage structures in different corners of the country, which are not protected by government, but unfortunately this year, it would have not been possible to add more monuments which are not in the list. We can start trying that from next year, after creating some sort of catalogue or list first before the competition. Thanks. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 03:29, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
