Advocacy for Wikimedia emoji set

[edit]

Wikimedia projects should have an emoji set.

If there is no Wikimedia emoji set, then readers who come to Wikimedia projects will see the emoji set which is default on their advice. Usually this is acceptable. There are some circumstances when we might want many users to see the same emoji, which could only happen if there were a Wikimedia emoji set. An idealistic reason for having a Wikimedia emoji set is to promote the use of free media rather than having users view a corporation's proprietary or use-restricted emoji set in Wikimedia projects, which is the current norm.

I am indifferent about what emoji set to use. The best choice would be a complete emoji set, probably Creative Commons Zero licensed or public domain, which has a transparent history of community discussion in its development, and which has sought diverse representation in its development. No existing set is all of these things. Blue Rasberry (talk) 16:41, 16 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Bluerasberry: For the sake of clarity -- you mean this hypothetical emoji set would be served as a colour webfont, so that emoji in flowing text would be rendered in it, as opposed to the current situation where emoji in flowing text are rendered with the users' fonts (as you say) and images hosted on Commons are also served when precise representation is desired? Is that why a restrictions-free license would be required rather than a simply Commons-compatible one, because there would be nowhere to click that attribution etc. could be viewed (except perhaps in the general license statement page for each project)? @Carlinmack: Can you answer this? This is beyond me. Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:51, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Normally free (libre) fonts are licensed with something like the en:SIL Open Font License because you cannot apply a creative works license to an image in the text (how would you display it etc). I think bluerasberry is suggesting that a very unrestrictive license should be placed on the source designs so that it is possible to contribute additions and modifications to the set, which is not stipulated by the SIL license mentioned previously. I'm happy to clarify and discuss more Carlinmack (talk) 21:25, 9 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I am in favour of a freely licensed competitor set to the usual ones, and I believe it would be maintainable by Wikimedians into the future but only if there was a substantial body of icons to start with. So if an existing set could be adapted, that would be all for the better IMO as long as the licensing situation were acceptable. It's true that fonts have their own copyright situation, and it might also be true that emoji are an even more particular niche within fonts, since it is rare for a font to be designed with the intent being to display a single character by itself, but that is the norm with emoji. Bringing WikiProject Emoji to Wikidata!

[edit]

Hello! I've created a draft for WikiProject emoji on Wikidata. I think that we can benefit from more structured data about emoji. Please check it out! https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Wd-Ryan/Draft:WikiProject_Emoji Wd-Ryan (talk) 02:20, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
