WikiProject Emoji curates and presents emojis for use in Wikimedia projects and elsewhere.

About WikiProject Emoji[edit]

Emojis are ideograms in digital communication. Like other media, emojis can have copyright, brand affiliations, and licenses for reuse.

Wikimedia Commons is the non-text media repository for Wikimedia projects. The community of volunteers here collects media compatible with Commons' goals and curates that media with metadata including its reuse restrictions.

WikiProject Emoji is a project for anyone to curate emojis in Wikimedia Commons. Useful activities include importing collections of emojis with free licenses to Commons, presenting Commons' various emoji collections, and supporting other parts of Wikimedia which need emojis.

Commentary

There is no existing emoji set which is both Creative Commons Zero or public domain and free from affiliation from a major corporate brand.

Wikimedia emojis[edit]

Wikimedia projects currently have no standard set of emojis, however there are SMirC and Category:Smilies. SMirC is consistent but doesn't have the range of the full emoji set. Category:Smilies isn't consistent and has more variety but doesn't map fully to the Unicode emoji set.

Many media organizations with reach similar to Wikimedia have their own emoji sets which they use in their products.

Wikimedia projects use emojis in various contexts. There are Wikipedia articles for various emojis, editors use emojis in their communication with each other, and emojis communicate messages in various contexts.

Policy issues[edit]

Use of emoji in Wikimedia projects

Wikimedia could select and present a set of emoji.

When users see emoji, they might either view the default emoji set for their device, or there can be an override to present the emoji set by the media environment where they are viewing the content. For example, a user may have a mobile phone which displays a default emoji set, but when the user visits a social media platform, that platform presents its own emoji set over the user's default.

If Wikimedia projects had a recommended emoji set then that set could display over a user's default in Wikimedia projects.

Recommendation of emoji sets

The Wikimedia community has a commitment to promoting free and open media for global audiences. Wikimedia Commons could evaluate various available emoji sets, including by reuse restriction and suitability for diverse readership, and present use recommendations. In general, Commons will recommend the most free content, with the most relevance to the diverse audience, with the highest production values to enable accessibility in reuse.
