Geotag bug?[edit]

Hi,

Although the GPS data in the EXIF are correct, once dragged to the uploader they get a new value for "Longitude".

As an example among others File:Mascarón, Plaza de la Merced, Málaga.jpg Longitude 4° 25′ 2.75″ W is changed into 3° 34′ 57.25″ E, which brings the picture to Algiers instead of Malaga.

Is this a known bug? Can I do something to correct it before uploading?

Thanks --Jwh (talk) 02:20, 31 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Jwh: should be fixed now, will be released in version 1.24. Yarl 19:55, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Merci! --Jwh (talk) 21:49, 23 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I still have the same problem, with a freshly installed version of Vicuña. For images with eastern longitude (Barcelona) it seems to work fine, but for images with western longitude (Navarre) it seems to misunderstand longitude. In fact, it seems to understand -1.3060776 longitude as +1 - 0.3060776 (example). That seems to be the same error experienced by Jwh two years ago.--Pere prlpz (talk) 10:00, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Same problem here. A lot of images are wrong geotagged. Fresh example: File:Escultura agricultor castellano (03).jpg ... MiguelAlanCS (talk) 19:30, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with geolocation[edit]

Hello, thank you for that great tool, I love it. But now I saw, there is a Problem with the location data of that Picture File:Spain Andalusia Seville BW 2015-10-23 12-58-03.jpg. Please compare the data in EXIF and what Vicuna made from it: 5° 59′ 32,07″ W in EXIF but Vicuna made 4° 00′ 27,93″ O from it. --Berthold Werner (talk) 17:15, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you may want to have a look here. --Jwh (talk) 17:46, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. --Berthold Werner (talk) 18:11, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dupe bug[edit]

There is no restriction to upload exact duplicates, this is a bug. (Normally we get on other upload methods a warning.) PS: I do mention this here because this is a bad bypass of warnings and precautions. The bug report is here User: Perhelion 16:34, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've noticed the problem on 1.23 too (maybe on 1.22 before as well), but I see it differently:
The upload check, even for some 30 files in a row, takes less than one second; at the end Vicuña confirms the upload of all the files, but when you check on Commons you've uploaded less files.
After verification it appears that it didn't upload those files where files exist already on Commons with exactly the same file-name
Such I presume that the inititial check w/ the warning is no more done, but Vicuña does not overwrite existing file-names. --Jwh (talk) 21:27, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The problem still persists. I would place a banner on the the main page, about this problem, because it may cause a lot of problems to our volunteers.--Juandev (talk) 12:51, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
+1 Yes indeed. For example I had to check over 4000 files from "another user" locally with report on Bots request where nobody could help direct to solve this.User: Perhelion 14:09, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Some of my friend recently tested the lates VU and they indicate different behaviour. So I wonder weather the problem is caused by VU or by Java!--Juandev (talk) 12:08, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
So I have tasted some approches and came to these results:
What happens if you upload file with existing filename via VU?
VU Java OS Behaviour Tester Notes
1.23 1.60 Win Vista VU test for duplicate result as "no duplicate", VU behaves like uploading, VU doesnt upload the file, VU places the file allready existing on Commons into the gallery using the file description from the new upload (in the gallery only), VU tags file as uploaded Juandev (diskuse) 4. 12. 2016, 14:14 (CET) 1.23 got via update
1.23 1.60 Win Vista works properly Juandev (diskuse) 4. 12. 2016, 14:33 (CET) former installation removed
Thus my hypothesis is, that the problem is caused by erronous update. While the previous versions has almost no support files, 1.23 comes with 10 MB of files.--Juandev (talk) 13:46, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Taken on[edit]

Won't it be an idea to use this template in the date field for those files where Vicuña reads the date from the EXIF? Such it would put the file automatically into the Category:Taken on (date). The feature could be enabled individually in the settings. --Jwh (talk) 08:12, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How to use another data ingestion template, say Photograph?[edit]

Dear all,

I saw that Vicuna offers the very useful option to use a different metadata ingestion template from Template:Information. However, if i try this modification of Template:Photograph using variables found in the Vicuna github documentation

{{Photograph
 |photographer = %AUTHOR%
 |title =
 |description = %DESC%
 |depicted people =
 |depicted place =
 |date = %DATE%
 |medium =
 |dimensions =
 |institution =
 |department =
 |references =
 |object history =
 |exhibition history =
 |credit line =
 |inscriptions =
 |notes =
 |accession number =
 |source = %SOURCE%
 |permission = %LICENSE%
 |other_versions =
}}

there is no reaction. Where do i go wrong? Thank you for considering this problem. Hansmuller (talk) 09:43, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Hansmuller: Have you seen https://github.com/yarl/vicuna/wiki/Custom-description? Yarl 13:17, 29 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Yarl: Thanks. Yes, i saw that page. Perhaps the problem is the remaining empty fields, say |title, |depicted people, |depicted place, |medium etc. or is it BOM ? The new fields must be input by overloading the %CATEGORIES% variable using wikicode? Perhaps there is a working example of such an external .txt file? Thanks, Hansmuller (talk) 09:29, 30 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I tried your new upload program Pattypan, which is great and by the way solves this Photograph problem! (Do you continue to support Vicuna? It now seems superseded by Pattypan.) Thanks a lot, Hansmuller (talk) 08:10, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The category search field crashes the whole program[edit]

Many times I have faced this problem. I'm struggling to search and add any Commons categories to the pictures. The problem is related to the automatic scanning for categories in dropdown menus while typing text into the category field. When i've added a category to a picture VicunaUploader forces me to choose the same category over and over again until the mouse cursor and dropdown menus start flickering badly. After this VicunaUploader in its entirety is unusable as it refuses me to press any other buttons or type any text anywhere in the program window. The only option is to close the program and start all over again.

That being said, some process in the category scanning and suggesting breaks the whole program. Happens way too often! --Ximonic (talk) 09:22, 5 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Bugs[edit]

I see some bugs:

  1. After a restart of the program and load a saved session: i can't never start the upload of the session. The menu EDIT is grey and have no function (select files and else).
  2. I can't upload modification files again (override) with same session (same file names local and online).

not mentioning OS at all[edit]

So, this is another Windows-only *beep* ?? --Itu (talk) 18:36, 25 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It is a Java program and runs everywhere that you can run Java. That includes at least Linux, OS X and Windows. darkweasel94 22:00, 25 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That should be mentioned explicitly.
More Questions: Is it for running in the browser? Is it GUI-only? --Itu (talk) 12:21, 26 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's a Java desktop application. And I'm not sure if it's got a command-line interface. — Sam Wilson ( TalkContribs ) … 16:34, 26 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There is no CLI right now. Yarl 16:41, 26 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Itu: I've made some changes to the main page. Hope that's more clear now? --El Grafo (talk) 15:05, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. --Itu (talk) 16:30, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't work properly with files whose filenames are different only by number of spaces[edit]

I was trying to upload two files that were, here locally, named:

BH 6389 Historama Ferlach 2002.jpg

vs.

BH 6389 Historama Ferlach 2002.jpg

If those are in the same folder, and I load them at the same time, VicuñaUploader does load all of them into the program – but then when uploading just ignores some of them. It does not even warn me that something is wrong and I should fix it. If I had not noticed this, I would just have missed some files that I wanted to upload. Please fix this! darkweasel94 18:23, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Settings window not display[edit]

We have a problem with settings window, which is not display in full lenght, so we cannot safe settings. The problem encountered on Windows 10, Java 8.101, VU 1.23, 1.22. Only the combination: Windows 10, Java 8.101, VU 1.21 works. While Win 7, Java 8.101, VU. 1.23 works.--Juandev (talk) 08:50, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

But in the case of Win 10 there are other problems with tab Edit, which doesnt work at all. BTW, what to do if we cant write to settings?--Juandev (talk) 09:04, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The same issue now on Win7, I opened a Github report. I don't understand this because it has worked in the past "one time" (I tested some screen resolutions and deleted the settings). I found a workaround, select the "first tab" and the use the keys  Shift + Tab . Forward tab is not working because you get on the textfield which swallow all key tabs to text tabs.
And another bug, I can't upload anymore (the option is also grayed out). (~_~)User: Perhelion 14:17, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Same problem on Ubuntu MATE 1.12.1 - fortunately there is a protion of Save button so it could be used.--Juandev (talk) 09:07, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well after a while upload button disapears from visible area even in the main tab. So finally you cannot use it. Maybe I can try to replace openJDK by Java, but I am lazy. I would probably buy a new ntb with win os.--Juandev (talk) 10:19, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Same problem on macOS Sierra. No solution in 15 months? --CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 09:33, 17 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Juandev: , @Cccefalon: , @Perhelion: What's status of this? We need test last version of Vicuna (actually 1.24-beta2) and describe properly issue. As i understand issue is with some small window and not visible "Save" button in setting. But i don't see this issue in my instalation. Please fill issue in github (https://github.com/yarl/vicuna/issues/100) if there is issue. Skim (talk) 22:44, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Skim: Still same issue with BigSur, M1 Processor.
I also tried the beta version, but this version is even not inclined to start, giving error code:
"Unrecognized option: --add-opens"
"Error: Could not create the Java Virtual Machine."
"Error: A fatal exception has occurred. Program will exit."
--CEphoto, Uwe Aranas (talk) 10:54, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery option[edit]

That looks unlucky! I expected also the filename as %NAME% (as this key is few times used in the tool)!? I mean it is not important, but I guess the file-desc. is usual uniform, so the gallery-file-desc is useless.User: Perhelion 22:51, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just a point regarding grammar. In English file name is uniform, but not in flexive languages like Czech or Polish:-)--Juandev (talk) 09:13, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
But you are right. It would be nice to use it in description and wherever it could be used. That would faster our administrative work and give us more time on activities we like.--Juandev (talk) 09:42, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Saving password[edit]

@Yarl: I feel like it’s quite annoying always having to copy in the password. Would be nice if it could be saved (I’d be fine if one would have to manually edit the settings file for this) or OAuth could be used. --Nenntmichruhigip (talk) 18:28, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bug naming[edit]

It seems the keyword %NAME% is only used for counter naming, which is fully unexpectedly.[1] So the usage of this function is very limited (I've to usage another naming tool). It should be a trivial matter to fix this. User: Perhelion 12:55, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File order[edit]

I have migrated from Win Vista to Ubuntu MATE and now I realised, that file order is not sorted by name. It is difficult with describing files, when they are not in alphabetical/time order. Is there a way, how to sort them into order?--Juandev (talk) 09:10, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Now I see that the problem is probably OS or Java related, because previously on Win Vista and offical Java, I have just navigated right folder and click open, now doing the same on Ubuntu MATE and (probably) OpenJDK it read files in chaotic order, so I should seletct them (in right order) and open.--Juandev (talk) 09:38, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot edit[edit]

I am having VU 1.23 Java 8 on Win 7 Proffessional. When I load session Edit tab stays green and I cant select All files to upload. This is really boring, especially when you have a lot of files in the batch and you should select them manually.--Juandev (talk) 18:39, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't work so great...[edit]

In the past I usually used the UploadWizard. But I find it tedious for large numbers of images. So for my current batch of several hundred image files I tried Commonist and it wasn't nice to me. So I tried VicuñaUploader. After some time it crashed and I lost much of the work I had done. Well, my own fault. VicuñaUploader has a save function and I didn't use it regularly. Second try: I saved often and regularly. But to my disappointment after I opened the saved session all the coordinates were gone. Is there an easy way to restore them to the session? --Slomox (talk) 09:07, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Another point: when I saved, all my files were selected. When I opened the session none were selected. Shouldn't the selection be saved too? And is there a way to select all files (except clicking the checkboxes on each single file)? --Slomox (talk) 09:12, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The short description on the right panel says Ctrl+Shift+A should work, but it doesn't. --Slomox (talk) 15:12, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and one more point (which is more about convenience than an error): it would be nice when coordinates could be inserted separated by a comma instead of a semicolon. Some of my coordinates were a bit off because the GPS didn't adjust in time and I took the correct coordinates from Google Maps. But Google Maps separates them with a comma. So I always had to change the comma to a semicolon. --Slomox (talk) 12:27, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And when I try to upload my files: nothing happens. I'm logged in, server status is okay, I get to the "Uploading..." dialogue but there is never any progress. --Slomox (talk) 15:12, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

First of all let us no, which operation system you are using and which Java.

If you opened session and there were no coords, I am affraid you cant resore them. Session is in fact the restoration file. Maybe you can have a look to the configuration file, if youll find there something wrong.

I think there is no reason to save selection. You can select them again by clicking on Edit-Select all.

Well instead of Google Maps, use this tool designed especially for Commons.

And again, what os and Java you have?--Juandev (talk) 23:45, 26 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. My OS is Windows 10 Pro (Version 1703) and my Java Version 8 Update 144 (Build 1.8.0_144-b01).
The "Edit" menu is completely inactive (greyed out) for me.
I will try out the tool in the future. Thanks! --Slomox (talk) 06:40, 27 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
These errors are not new. Loading a former session the image are not uploadable. I first add an image, remove it and it works. Coordinates the same, I added the template GPS Exif to the template. Too much proposed categories and the tool crashes. BTW: Win 10, current Java. I reported the errors a long time ago. --XRay talk 14:32, 28 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Uninstall[edit]

There is not described how to uninstall VU in manuall. It would be nice to add it.--Juandev (talk) 14:50, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fatal error[edit]

Suddenly VU Tools frame of the window is smaller than the window itself, so it covers important buttons. Thus I cannot use VU. I have reinstalled Java, but the problem persist. I havent reinstalled VU, because I dont know, how to uninstall it nor how to find all its components in Win 7.--Juandev (talk) 14:52, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

After VU reinstalation, it works properly.--Juandev (talk) 15:11, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Now I can see, what might be a cause. For certain reason the "default directory" dialog window in Settings:Program, loads longer andress and it customize itself regarding the lenght of the string. If the string is to long, it pushes safe and other buttons, out of the window frame.--Juandev (talk) 15:35, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So is there a way to prevent VU from loading that default directory address?--Juandev (talk) 15:41, 5 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Geotagging from metadata error[edit]

The location in the metadata for this upload is correct. However the longitude in the location template generated by VicunaUploader is wrong. This error was across a number of files I uploaded. Celuici (talk) 09:04, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

you may want to have a look here, perhaps the same old bug. --Berthold Werner (talk) 10:13, 18 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Same error. A workaround would be using {{GPS EXIF}} instead of placing coordinates. However, is there a way to tell Vicuña not to include coordinates when uploading?--Pere prlpz (talk) 08:57, 25 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A year later the error is still there.--Pere prlpz (talk) 21:25, 3 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

More information: for some images Vicuña reads longitude wrongly from metadata. I've tried with version 1.23. I think it's related to a range of longitudes (a few degrees West?) because my photographs taken in Catalonia are uploaded with the right coordinates, but my photographs taken in Navarre with the same Samsung phone are uploaded with wrong longitude.Example.--Pere prlpz (talk) 18:57, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Previous occurrences of this problem (#Geotag_bug.3F) also happen in a similar longitude range.--Pere prlpz (talk) 19:01, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Does this still happen? In 1.24? --Juandev (talk) 23:13, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Copy description/category bug also copies filename from above[edit]

Just trying out Vicuna and when I click on the "copy description and categories from above" button, it also copies the filename from above, replacing the filename that I want. This means hundreds of copy/pastes to fill in the descriptions and categories... --RaffiKojian (talk) 03:58, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, this is the normal behaviour, I guess. Juandev (talk) 00:49, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Win 10, compatability[edit]

Does anyone run VU on Win 10? What version of VU and Java works for you. I have actually VU 1.23 and Java 8.151 and there are problems with VU not opening, stopping or suddenly closing, so I wonder, whether this might be caused by some incompatibility.

Back in 2016, we did some compatibility check and we got these results.

Stuck right after installation. How-to needed[edit]

Guys, I'm too old and dumb so I'm stuck with the basic setup and there seems to be nothing on the subject in the docs...

  • How do I switch the interface language back to plain English? Vicuna locked onto the Windows system language, which is almost mumbo-jumbo to me.
  • How do I increase the font and icon sizes? Too small to read. Apparently, the program does not recognize mousewheel or keyboards shortcuts. Retired electrician (talk) 18:31, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Retired electrician: First point: Language you could select in (English) Tools/Language/__LANGUAGE__. After saving of setting to session.xml there will be set to your language. Second point: Actually i don't know. Skim (talk) 23:22, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Retired electrician: 1) this works per Skim, but sometimes, you have to restart VU or PC to apply this, 2) there is no way I think, you should install an external software for that. But thanks for a tip, we will have a look at this, whether we can add a zoom feature in the future releases. --Juandev (talk) 21:43, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Preparation of 1.24[edit]

I created some 1.24 beta versions with many of fixes. You could look and test in https://github.com/yarl/vicuna/tags. Skim (talk) 14:06, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to see that, thanks a lot! --El Grafo (talk) 14:00, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I downloaded the beta4 zip file and extracted all files. I didn't find any EXE file. How do I get an EXE file? Bubba73 (talk) 04:09, 22 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what Skim is up to, but there won't be an exe file. To run it on Windows, you'll need also a recent Java download it and then you can run the VU jar file. --Juandev (talk) 14:15, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Juandev: There's no vicuna.jar any more, only a vicuna.bat for windows and a startupscript called vicuna for unixoids. --El Grafo (talk) 15:16, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bubba73 you don't need an EXE file. Assuming you have Java installed: just double click the vicuna.bat file in the bin subfolder, confirm that you really want to do this (first time only) and Vicuna should start. El Grafo (talk) 15:07, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've done that now. But I have an old icon that runs vicuna.bat. I changed it to the new vicuna.bat, but when I run it, it gives a blank command like screen for about a second and the disappears, without doing anything. I have Java a update 281 installed. How can I actually get it to run? Bubba73 (talk) 03:57, 26 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Same here. It wont run on Win nor Ubuntu. --Juandev (talk) 21:41, 19 August 2021 (UTC)::::[reply]
Doesn't run... MiguelAlanCS (talk) 20:04, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
1.23 throws a server error, 1.24 doesn't start at all. So for me, VicuñaUpload doesn't work anymore. Can you predict when there will be an update to the software? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:14, 4 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

+1 I did like Vicuña. But it did have major problems, such as the category-tool eventually causing the software to crash almost every sit. If Vicuña gets updated, I hope this gets fixed. Then again, UploadWizard doesn't allow copying of many categories. Does anybody know good alternatives to upload many pictures on Commons? --Ximonic (talk) 15:14, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
+1 1.23 cannot logon, 1.24 does not start at Windows 10. Sad. --Migebert (talk) 09:31, 11 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
+1 1.23 cannot logon, 1.24 does not start at Windows 10. --Packa (talk) 21:20, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, the problem is known and hopefully, somebody will fix it. It related to some changes on the site of MediaWiki and it hit all standalone Java platforms. The components staying between MediaWiki and VU have to be changed. --Juandev (talk) 10:26, 12 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, these errors are related to changes in Mediawiki API. There is new (1.25) release of Vicuna, which fixed it. If you have issues, please report to right place Skim (talk) 23:45, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

New version ready to use[edit]

Let me announce a new version release 1.24.8a SE (supported edition).

Download and installation[edit]

  • Linux users:
    1. Download tar or zip from this link
    2. Extract it
    3. Run it from the terminal or double click vicuna file in vicuna/bin directory
  • Windows users:
    • If you don't have the latest Java (Java 16 or openJava equivalent):
      1. Download 1.24.8a-portable.zip to the folder other than Desktop
      2. Extract it from the zip.
      3. Double click on vicuna-launcher.exe in vicuna folder
        • If Microsoft Defender blocks it due to an unknown originator, click on More information, and run it anyway
    • If you have the latest Java (Java 16 or openJava equivalent):
      1. Download tar or zip from this link
      2. Extract it
      3. Double click on vicuna.bat in vicuna/bin directory

Fixes and enhancements[edit]

The goal of Phase 1 of our project, was to fix major bugs, which were blocking users to use VicuñaUploader (VU). Thus we provide two versions for Linux-like operating systems (tested on Ubuntu) and Windows (tested on Windows 10). We have also fixed bugs making VU hard to use, e.g. not visible submit buttons. Other fixes and enhancements include:

  1. Coordinates work as they should
  2. Google Satelite imaginary replaced with Bing satellite maps1
  3. New map layers added:1
    1. Mapy.cz Base - provides names of settlements without a need of further zooming
    2. Mapy.cz Turist - provides extra details like contour lines, tourist trails, or various points of interest
  4. Newly you can add a direction in which the photograph is made2

Notes:

  1. If you see a gray background with clocks you have to wait till the map layer loads. Note some maps don't work at all like MapQuest or Google. If you see just plain gray, green, or another color without a detail, just zoom out scrolling.
  2. Right-click into the map to indicate the position of the photographer. Move your mouse in the direction of the photograph direction. Hold shift and right-click. You should see the blue arrow and a value behind coordinates in the line below.

Report bugs and wishes[edit]

We know about some bugs in the software, which we plan to fix in the future releases. Feel free to report on this discussion page errors and enhancements you would like to add in the future release.

--Juandev (talk) 20:47, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! MiguelAlanCS (talk) 12:35, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Juandev: Please, don't do things like "create fork of project" and rewrite original project information to forked project. I reverted your changes in user documentation and create section for your fork. If you want participate in this project, please comunicate. This project has some history, you can contribute to it. Thanks. Skim (talk) 23:50, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I do communicate. I don't know what more communication should I provide. I try to communicate here on Github and also on Messanger. Actually, I am afraid I don't understand what you are talking about, what does it mean "do not create for of the project" or "I reverted your changes in user documentation". --Juandev (talk) 20:26, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Juandev: See https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Vicu%C3%B1aUploader#Unofficial_fork Skim (talk) 14:01, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Additional note[edit]

If you will upgrade to 1.25, which is the newest release by user Skim we cannot guarantee you the above-mentioned functionality and fix his version. --Juandev (talk) 14:20, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bugs[edit]

Can't save <categories> and <extraText> and when typing categories in main window you don't get response from the server. All this was possible with the old version! --Andreas Schwarzkopf (talk) 09:11, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If I understand it well:
  1. in Tools:Settings:General:Categories - you type in categories, hit the save button and when you reopen it its not there
  2. in Tools:Settings:General:Additional text - you add extra text, hit the sve button and when you reopen it its not there

?

Well with the category hint we know that it doesn't work. --Juandev (talk) 09:49, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Portable version is working, but I couldn't import an xml session saved in 1.23 version (there are 76 files with descriptions and categories, and I hope to upload them). And the mentioned problem with categories is also present. Homoatrox (talk) 19:57, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I see, I think this problem we cannot fix as version 1.23 is a very old built in some very old Java. 1.23 is still not working? --Juandev (talk) 10:15, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I tried 1.23 version again, but still can't login to Commons due to server error. — Homoatrox (talk) 18:49, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe the way would be to generate a session with two photographs in the current version of VU @Homoatrox: , then open it in Notepad or similar, look what is different and redesign the original session file according to the new session file. You can try to do it in PSPad, which is a text editor allowing multiple replace. Potentially you can send me the old session to janlochman at gmail and I will have a look, what is the difference, and whether we can fix it somehow.--Juandev (talk) 07:31, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Andreas Schwarzkopf: When you have issue, please fill issue in repository and put information about version of Vicuna. Thanks. Skim (talk) 23:56, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Andreas Schwarzkopf: Which is not needed if you continue to use the supported edition 1.24.8a. --Juandev (talk) 14:23, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The bugs are in this version. Andreas Schwarzkopf (talk)
@Homoatrox: Between 1.23 and 1.24 are changes in session file (saving of coordination). Skim (talk) 23:56, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Homoatrox: 1.23 and 1.24 is not working because changes in MediaWiki API or behaviour. You could run 1.25 or fork. Skim (talk) 14:03, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

VicuñaUploader 1.25[edit]

There is new version of VicuñaUploader (1.25) which fixes issues with Mediawiki API and run on Windows. If you have any issues, please fill issues. Thanks. Skim (talk) 23:59, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

cool news. is there a binary or jar for download that i missed, or do we all have to install gradle now and compile from source? :) --Ordercrazy (talk) 13:52, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ordercrazy: Pff, sorry, i missed binaries.. Updated. Run is via bin/vicuna on Linux and bin/vicuna.bat on Windows. Skim (talk) 13:59, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That is f*cking cool and confirmed to work fine now. Many thanks to Skim for that fix! Please take a few nights sleep before you resign after doing the most relevant work - things might settle. Vicuna worked very fine for a few hundred heavy users for years without too much development, but i'd be pleased if someone who is able to understand the code and compile a working version is sitting somewhere feeling a bit of responsibility. Thank you again! --Ordercrazy (talk) 09:48, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bug in Settings-File[edit]

Vicuna 1.25 has but in saving the settings-file - thats why it won't start. On exiting, it throws an error:

Error: No converter available
---- Debugging information ----
message             : No converter available
type                : java.awt.Dimension
converter           : com.thoughtworks.xstream.converters.reflection.ReflectionConverter
message[1]          : Unable to make field private static final long java.awt.Dimension.serialVersionUID accessible: module java.desktop does not "opens java.awt" to unnamed module @786fb360
-------------------------------

then the vicuna.settings-file is saved with a length of 1730 bytes, but incomplete, leaving invalid settings-xml, that prevents vicuna from starting the next time. If i delete the settings file or delete the files last line with the incomplete tag and close the xml with </settings>, vicuna starts fine, but on ending it, it still saves an complete settings-file. --Ordercrazy (talk) 12:18, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unofficial fork[edit]

What does it mean Unofficial fork? There is something like an official VU? What does it mean that VU is official? --Juandev (talk) 11:33, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Juandev:
Some facts about project:
Some fact about your activity:
  • You created grant (great!)
  • You forked project (as many other people, look to https://github.com/yarl/vicuna/network/members), great.
  • There are some changes in this forked repository, great.
  • You change official project information to your. !SIC! You cannot do this things!
What you could do:
  • You could prepare PR (code pull requst) and we could merge it to main repository and create new release(s). Would be nice, link to issues, document changes to release etc.
    • btw: it's nice to check this code changes by other people. As i was looking, there are some issues.
  • You could get admin rights to repository from yarl.

Well, that does not mean it's official. When I asked Yarl to give You rights for VU, I didn't want them myself, because I am not a programmer. And when I asked you in May, whether you are going to continue to develop VU, you said something like maybe. Unfortunately "maybe" means "no" to me if I run a project and I am responsible for its successful completion. So we continued to work on it thinking we are working on an official VU. I don't think the source code should be the one of Yarl's repository. What if Yarl wasn't available and you should copy it anyway to the new location. Would you call his unavailable version as official and yours unofficial? So that's for clarification.

And now for the future. I am sorry but I don't have expertise in coordinating two developers (which is maybe even not your goal). Thus I think our code stays separated and we can cross include some solutions since it's open-source.

And regarding the main page itself. Let's provide a link to both versions, I don't see a reason, why I should be working on an unofficial one. I am supporting VU since it started back in 2012, I have received a grant with the support of the community on a software that was for some time unmaintained, so I don't know why our effort should be from day to day unofficial.--Juandev (talk) 15:15, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Juandev: Ok, i am leaving project. I don't want to communicate in this style. Skim (talk) 23:57, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There was a text which I have moved to the next section titled "Login problem".

@Skim: I am not happy either with this situation. That's why I propose, do not look at what happened in the past, let's look to the future, even I think if it was done differently in the past, this problem could not rose up at all.

I understand that to have one source code and collaborate on it would be the best way, but as I stated above, I am not a programmer and I don't understand programming, so I cannot manage it (and yes, if I have (official) project grant on it I have to manage it). That's why I cooperate with only one programmer, because it's something I can do with my expertise. So I would understand you don't want to work for free and someone else would overtake your solutions. But that is the other problem we already talked about. You are an affiliate's tech staff paid from WMF's APG. The rules don't allow you to be funded from other WMF grants like Rapid Grant we have for VU. You can combine APG and travel grants I guess, but this is not the case. So in this situation, I really don't have another proposal, than the one I have already proposed. Volunteers are welcome to propose solutions to tech problems with ((our version)) - i.e. version we develop from WMF grant) VU, but I leave the decision on exander77, whether he will include them or not. --Juandev (talk) 10:29, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the documentation of that grant? It seems rather unlikely that WMF would have given a grant to somebody who has no idea about the concept of open software development. Especially as that approach is about to destroy the whole project and any faith people have in WMF. Agathoclea (talk) 15:08, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What project destruction you are talking about? --Juandev (talk) 15:16, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Login problem[edit]

This documentation was moved from the previous section titled "Unofficial fork".

v1.25 binary works fine, at least at my environments (Win10): https://github.com/yarl/vicuna/releases/tag/1.25 --Ordercrazy (talk) 20:08, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MiguelAlanCS: Hi, do you have this problem with 1.24.8a or 1.25? And which operating system do you have? I have just uploaded bunch of files using 1.24.8a on Ubuntu and it worked well. --Juandev (talk) 09:59, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I downloaded UO fork, the program recomended me to upload to 1.25. Then i try to login (my username and password are correct) and cant do it: Message "Error de servidor" (Server error). I have Windows 10. (sorry, English isn't my first language) MiguelAlanCS (talk) 10:05, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see, we will have a look on it.--Juandev (talk) 10:29, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So I have just try that on Win 10 and it works to me. These are my steps:
  1. I download 1.24.8a-portable.zip
  2. Extract it to the folder other than Desktop
  3. Double click on vicuna-launcher in vicuna folder
  4. In the blue pop up screen of Microsoft Defender I click on Other information and then choose the option "Run anyway"
  5. When it provides me with higher version 1.25 and I dismiss it (don't upgrade)
  6. Then click on login icon, type in my user name and password, and it works
There could be a server lag wifi connection problem.--Juandev (talk) 11:08, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Vicuna quit working[edit]

Vicuna quit working on my Windows 10 computer. (It worked a couple of weeks ago.) I downloaded version 1.25, and replaced the vicuna.bat file with the new one. But both just show the blue screen for about a second and then it disappears. I looked in the batch file for any information, but I didn't find any instructions or anything. How can I get it working? Bubba73 (talk) 22:21, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I was able to get the thing in the section above to work. Bubba73 (talk) 01:06, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, BitDefender seems to think that it is infected. Bubba73 (talk) 03:09, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Bubba73: I you have any issue with Windows 10 run, you could start Vicuna in Windows console and read error. Or use something like Far manager with CTRL-O to see console output. Without looking to issue is hard to say, what happened. Skim (talk) 16:35, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing, but when I tried to run it in console mode, I got:

The second error message tells that you have Java 8 installed, but VicuñaUploader requires Java 11 or newer. You can download official Java versions from Oracle (can be used for non-commercial purposes). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:08, 4 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bubba73: Well, you can downgrade to 1.24.8a, which have to work. The way how to install it is written above.--Juandev (talk) 14:06, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The last error " XML document structures must start and end within the same entity." is a bug that the settings-file gets not correctly written. Workaround: If you delete vicuna.settings, you can start vicuna. But when you quit, the incomplete settings-file gets written again... you could edit the startup-batchscript to delete the faulty settings-file and replace it with a working one, e.g. written with an older version - but i hope that someone will fix this bug sometimes! --Ordercrazy (talk) 20:37, 6 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

VU 1.24.8a works, but sometime it fails to upload some files[edit]

Hi

I am using VU 1.24.8a since two weeks. This "new" version works rather well for me (I had tried to run version VU 1.25 but I never succeeded to launch it). But sometimes some few files are not uploaded. I got the following error message for those files:

Error : MW API error. Server response was: <?xml version="1.0" ?> <api servedby="mw1400"> <error code="badupload" info="The file for " was only partially uploaded." xml:space="preserve"> See https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/api.php for API usage. Subscribe to the mediawiki-api-announce mailing list at <https://lists.wikimedia.org/postorius/lists/mediawiki-api-announce.list.wikimedia.org/> for notice of API depeciations

This problem seems to me really random. This happens to very few files (2 or 3 among 10 or more files in a batch). I have not found clues that allows me to understand what is going on. The only solution I have is to manually upload the files that have problems using the Commons upload assistant. --Poudou99 (talk) 04:43, 7 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Changes of the main page[edit]

Since we have may have more working versions of VU and some information on the project might be obsolete, I recommend redesigning the main page as follows:

  • remove information, which version is the latest
  • Add to Quick Links links to both versions (1.25 and 1.24.8a supported edition), add links to reporting bugs and enhancements

Executing version 1.25[edit]

I used to work with version 1.23, but today it refused to login to Commons (Server error).

Then, I downloaded version 1.24 portable, but some files aren't uploaded (as another thread says).

I downloaded version 1.25, but I don't know how to start it because it doesn't have a launcher or an installer. Clicking on the bat file doesn't work.

How can I execute Vicuña 1.25?--Pere prlpz (talk) 15:52, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Pere prlpz: You may try these forks by Exander77: https://github.com/exander77/vicuna/releases --Александр Мотин (talk) 10:51, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
UPD: But the aforementioned problem still persists.--Александр Мотин (talk) 11:27, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Pere prlpz: I cannot help you with 1.25. It is maintained by user Skim, so you may ask him direclty on his userpage. I can recommend you to download version 1.3.1a-portable.zip unzip it and run it by clicking on it. Upgrading 1.25 doesnt lead to this version as 1.25 is not in line with 1.3.1a.--Juandev (talk) 17:23, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Pere prlpz: , @Juandev: I was leaving from project. Skim (talk) 15:04, 19 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So if Skim left the project, than I would recomend to try the latest version 1.3.2a. This version in Win starts by clicking on *-portable file as described above.
@Pere prlpz: @Александр Мотин: The problem with upload might be fixed in 1.3.2a version. If you'll encounter it please feel free to report it here or to Github issues. You should find error messages in the console/dos prompt, which would be helpful in this case. --Juandev (talk) 16:16, 19 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Now I see we haven't created a portable version for 1.3.2a, so if you can download 1.3.1a-portable.zip in Windows, unzip it and execute it via vicuna-launcher.exe and let it upgrade automatically to the higher version.--Juandev (talk) 16:21, 19 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Juandev: On Windows 10 Vicuna 1.3.1a and 1.3.2a are running into out of memory with using 100% of CPU of Java. Also portable version. I see a lot of traffic in cmd-box with asking commons.wikimedia.org for categories which are not used during upload. I could only made upload of 2 files with the portable version, the other versions were not working here. Sad. Migebert (talk) 20:34, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Migebert could you provide us with your harware characteristics? And could you copy&paste the cmd-box activity during your upload? You dont need to leave it here. Feel free to e-mail it to janlochman at gmail com. Juandev (talk) 23:35, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Juandev: i cannot reproduce this anymore, have tried all 1.3.* versions. It is possible that this was occured by Java, have installed 17.0.1 LTS currently. For upload i use the portable verion now with lower Java version and without cmd-box. Migebert (talk) 18:46, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, supperted Java versions are 11-16(17). There are still known problems, that some files are left not uploaded and could not be re-uploaded. In this case you may try to change the file name in the directory (i.e. not in VU), than open it in VU and uploaded. We are working on this problem trying to fix it. Juandev (talk) 23:49, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Juandev: same problem, unfortunately. you can check my recent uploads. I have Java 8 build 311 (build 1.8.0_311-b11) --Александр Мотин (talk) 17:24, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Александр Мотин I can read from your contribs, that you probably cannot upload all files once and you have to do reupload. If this happens, it would be helpful for us if you can copy and past the error message, which is under the error cross or in prompt/terminal.
I am not sure wether Java 8 is supported anymore, because the reason, why VU stopped to work was, that Java 8 was to old, so we started to compile VU with higher Java versions. In this case I can recomend you to upgrade to Java 16 (supported versions should be 11-16, not the latest 17). In Linux-like OS Java should update with regular updates. For Windows, we prepared portable version in the case Win users cannot update Java as higher Javas needs subscription. Juandev (talk) 21:06, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Collaborative documentation[edit]

I have created the page of the documentation here on Commons, that we could collaboratively create. The reason is especially the fact, there are some functions of VU I don't know how to use, so other people may describe them, but also transparency and workload distribution.--Juandev (talk) 21:55, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the fork only being linked?[edit]

Why is the only linked page the unofficial fork? Whilst the official version hasn't been updated for ~3 months that doesn't mean it should be completely removed. — Berrely • TC 14:30, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Actual VU is compatible with Java 11-17, so if you are not able to download it, download the portable version of VU, which includes proper Java. The portable version you will find in archives of VU releases. Juandev (talk) 17:52, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Short cuts?[edit]

In the actual version 1.3.3a the both schortcuts to select all of files du upload Strg+Shift+A doesn't work. It's crazy, because this is not possible via an other control. Also Strg+~ is not effected. thx -- K@rl (talk) Mid Abstond hoidn xund bleibn 10:23, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It works to me. Which operation system and Java version you are running? Juandev (talk) 17:57, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Now I see, you were right CTRL+SHIT+A doesnt work, but CTRL+A works. I wonder wether the functionality of the first one was different to the second one? Juandev (talk) 18:15, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

End of granted period[edit]

I would like to notify you that the support period from Wikimedia Foundation has ended (see the report on Meta). I am ready to continue to support major bug fixes by myself, but I cannot cover all wishes the community would have regarding VU.--Juandev (talk) 19:57, 29 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New version available for testing[edit]

I have new version available for testing, espacially need to test it on Windows. This version fixes the problem with freezing. Files are in zip 4,5 MB, so I can send it to your e-mail, of or if you are aware of a service I can upload it let me know. Currently, I don't have time to persuade the developers to commit it to the main source for an automatic update. In the future, I will probably set up my own Github, where I will manage it, but to speed it up, I am offering it this way. If anyone is interested, write to me at janlochman on gmail. Juandev (talk) 06:21, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You could push it to Wikimedia GitLab and make a release there, although that also requires a separate account (a Wikimedia developer account), so it may not be quicker than pushing to a GitHub fork. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 14:13, 27 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Usage[edit]

Hello, I want to ask if VicuñaUploader can really be used? Because I have difficulty when I want to use it and there is no tutorial on how to use it. Exagren (talk) 03:07, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am using it on daily basis. What kind of difficulties do you have @Exagren? Juandev (talk) 10:03, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I had difficulty installing the latest version, because it didn't really match the tutorial on GitHub. For the old version, I have trouble logging in. Exagren (talk) 14:42, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You dont install VU. You just download it and run. What you need is to instal openJDK (which is open Java). The way of installation depends on the operation system you are ussing (weather you are on Mac, Windows or Linux-like). Juandev (talk) 20:41, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think I found the cause, namely 2FA. Exagren (talk) 03:28, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is no 2FA, you just need your username and password everytime you open new VU. Its the same as on Commons. Juandev (talk) 20:42, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is 2FA – on Commons (available for certain user groups). If someone turned it on on Commons, and VU isn’t prepared to support it, the person is likely to be unable to log in through VU. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:42, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Juandev (talk) 19:14, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Small text on Linux[edit]

Any idea how to fix small text issue on Linux? On Windows the text seems just fine, but on my Linux distro is way small. I wonder weather this is handled by VU GUI library, or what might be the issue. Juandev (talk) 20:39, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am also seeking the holy grail of a replacement for the perfectly adequate Commonist. Dubious, I followed the link above:
https://www.uschovna.cz/en/zasilka/NKANE69KPSEGEEVY-NEG//
and the link has been hacked. Is there any further information? I am using Ubuntu 20.04 and though I would prefer an out of the box solution, but well documented source code, Java or/and Python libraries would enable me move forward.ClemRutter (talk) 17:17, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well I am not developing VU myself. I am just looking for developers, who may fix errors of the software. So last fix provide prety stable version, but I sure if the developer have that version online and document well its changes. I have it offline and if someone wants it, I send it. The above link stores the file just for about month and I havent tested it on Ubuntu 20.04. But its mostly about Java and we develop it on openJDK, which could run on Linux-like machines.
