Licence selector

Own work?

Hello, I suggest replacing "It is entirely my own work" by "I am the photographer, drawer, etc.". It is much less ambiguous, as "own work" could also mean "I scanned the image" or "I took the photo from the Internet". Yann (talk) 13:07, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Promote upload tools, please!

After far too many wasted hours, I've finally come across Commonist, which works really well. So why is there no link to information about upload tools anywhere here, here or here? Please, could we have a link or two so people at least know these tools exist, and they don't need to waste so many hours using the web interface. It would really encourage people to upload more photos - in my case, I've always been very selective because it's just so painful going through the upload process for every single photo. There is always a conflict between showing an instruction that some users will like, while burdening other users who don't need it with having to skip over it. Imagine, while you want to know about Commonist, someone else wants to know about Inkscape, and so on. Millions of users have millions of needs. For the users who think more information is better, I started the Editor's index to Commons. The intent is for the index to link to every instruction useful for Commons users, in a somewhat economical way. Category-bug in upload form

I use http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&uselang=deownwork with firefox 3.0.8 and select a category (I also click on ok!) but after the upload the image was not in this category. I have never had a problem with it, but I do not know if it has changed recently. You need to click and make sure that there is a tick to the right where the cat has been typed in. It will not work by just writing in the cat, it needs to be clicked as well. Snowmanradio (talk) 11:40, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I'll take look in the next few days. What skin(s) are you using? (There have been changes in the way categories are displayed on pages with the software updates from 2009-09-17. You may notice that we have empty category bars on all special pages. Something's still not quite right there. •  Done Ok, I've found the bug. The problem should go away if you go to the upload form and then refresh your browser's cache there. (The cache refresh must be done on Special:Upload because the upload script is not loaded on other pages, and a refresh elsewhere would thus not load the corrected version of this script.) Next time, please give me more information to work with. I need browser, skin, upload form version (see above), and what exactly you did do prior to uploading on the form: your inputs, whether you used the preview, whether the preview appeared in a popup or above the upload form, etc. This particular problem was related to the category bar added to the preview on September 18, 2009. Problem with permission field

I ran across a user who was adding "no" to the permission field based on the text under the field "Is this work of yours already published elsewhere?" Perhaps we should rephrase it to something like "Has this work of yours been published elsewhere, if so use... if not, leave this field blank or add specialized license tags" -Andrew c (talk) 16:28, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Update upload form

There are bots constantly changing the "summary" and "licensing" headers to international templates. Why not update the upload forms with the new international templates, so we avoid having to edit 1000s of files? -- P199 (talk) 13:49, 20 October 2009 (UTC)

Because these headers are added by the server-side MediaWiki software, and the {{int:}} feature exploits actually a bug. As long as this is still officially a bug, we certainly won't ask the developers to use a bug to "fix" something. :-) Lupo 14:39, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary?

On the page for uploads from a Federal government source, one of the options under licensing is "U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary". This seems strange to me. The Auxiliary is an unpaid volunteer organization, and photographs taken by its members would not necessarily be covered by the Federal government no-copyright rule as they are not government employees.

At the same time, there is no line for photographs taken by U.S. Coast Guard photographers. These are a common source for lighthouse photographs -- I have uploaded more than 100 for Maine and Massachusetts alone. . . . . Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk • contribs) 22:47, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

How to complete "author information" for original at Wikicommons when...

I did a derivative image from File:Peirce-quincuncial-projection.jpg but, when I try to upload my derivative image, the form tells me to "complete the author information" for the original file (File:Peirce-quincuncial-projection.jpg) that's already at Wikimedia Commons. I'm not even sure what's meant by "author" and there are a lot of undefined terms in the form. It was User:Mdf who originally uploaded the original file. What am I supposed to do? License

It is possible to mention in the upload form two or more categories. Wouldn't it be possible to change the upload form to mention two licenses ? I'm thinking of a combination of e.g. Creative Commons 3.0 Attribution and as a second license PD-Old (in case one uploads a photo made by the uploader of an old painting). Wouldn't it be best to change this to "open source software"? I know the ideological reasoning behind using "free" rather than "open source", but the vast majority of non-geeks (and, if we're being honest, perhaps only a sizable minority of geeks) would read "free" that way. I currently live in China where we are being blocked from uploading images. Nobody knows why, but it is not for us to question the wisdom of the leaders of this great country.

I am looking for somebody who just loves to upload images. In other words, a saint with too much time on her/his hands. Please, somebody volunteer. Old postcard image

Julian Irizar as Admiral (1914 or later)

Greetings to all:

• I have prepared a vignette clip of Argentine Navy Captan Julian Irizar taken from a postcard image at http://www.shieldsstamps.com.au/pics/ph526.jpg.
• The status of the source photo is unknown, but likely old enough to be free.
• Any copyright of the postcard or image is probably under Argentine law or other non-US law.
• The postcard was likely published near 1903-1904
• The image is of Julian Irizar as Captain , hence definitely imaged before 1914, when he became and Admiral and used a different uniform.

May this image be uploaded to commons used in Wikipedia? If so, what license should I use? Does it qualify as an old artwork? (For now I will upload under PD-AR-Photo, as that is the tag used for the image shown.) Since the postcard contains considerable artwork, would that not be under "Old Art", hence any clip of that also "Old Art (Derivitive Work)"?

This is in the hope that new uploaders will better understand what Commons accepts, and thus avoid misunderstandings later. I find the SCOPE page clear and well written and should serve potential uploaders well. Wha prompted me to make this suggestion is:

• I clicked on Upload as if I was a new user and saw useful links to kinds of image, but nothing giving an overview
• reading Commons:Village pump makes me suspect some uploaders genuinely do not realize there is an agreed scope

Upload PDF files

I've prepared a PDF document to be used in Arabic Wiki-books. The document is mainly a copy of the Ar wiki contents and so is free I guess. I don't like to use the "Make PDF" feature because it is making problems with Arabic Characters. What are the steps to upload a pdf file? Can I use the same upload of images? Better image formats advice needed

I see there is a great failure on which is the right image format. I see over 50% of non photos or SVG files are in the wrong JPEG format and this since many years, thats horrible. Buttons does not work on basic upload form

When uploading via "basic upload form" http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&action=submit buttons above licensing selection does not work on my Firefox 3.6.3.  Done OK, found it. It's on vector. I've fixed Catrope's usability initiative compatibility code in MediaWiki:Edittools.js, which effectively disabled all these buttons on vector for any input field not named "wpTextbox1". Which is of course not what we want. It works now again (maybe needs clearing your browser's cache while editing a page or while on the upload form). Lupo 17:03, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Error in basic form

What "upload popup"? Sound like something of User:Mdale's media upload thingy (mwEmbed). There has been a change recently in that code: [2], but I have no idea if that change might cause the problem. Ask User:Mdale about it. Lupo 19:03, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Yes when uploading via the api I have to generate some of the metadata client side that is normally done server side, combined with all the javascript form hacks the whole system is a bit of a mess and hard to work with... But in this case it was an issue of the javascript message interface tying to parse the template call ( I now insert without transform ) should be fixed in r74862, will push out the update shortly Mdale (talk) 23:22, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

Upload options

This Upload file page is very helpful, but a bit long on options. Is it possible to consolidate the last two:

1. I don't know who the author is, or I don't know what license applies
2. I need help figuring out what the license is

The first links to Commons:Upload/Unknown_author_or_license, the second links to Commons:Help and Commons:Licensing. The Unknown Author/License page already has links to help and could add one for the license. Just a small idea to keep the work going on Commons' front-end. I've been troubled by this license before. I've uploaded images and wrote a detailed fair use rationale, only to have another user completely annihilate everything I wrote and slap this license on it which I often don't believe applies. I guess I just don't even really understand the legal basis behind it, and even if I agree with the legal basis, no way on Earth do I trust users to validly identify whether something is 'trivial' or not. Filename error wipes full upload data description

Having spent 30 minutes researching information for a picture, acquiring dates and linking to references and other useful information, I was told that my filename was not suitable. No problem. But there as no option to go back and change it, and on clicking the back button, ALL my research and references disappeared, and I was taken to the starting Upload screen. What a waste of time. Why is there (a) no option to automatically rename an uploaded file with an unsuitable name (b) retain all information. --Iantresman (talk) 15:11, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

My preferences have the Monobook skin set and the Editing tab has "Use the old-style upload form layout" checked, "stockphoto_prevent=true;" is in my User:84user/monobook.js and I hide quite a bit of bloat in my User:84user/monobook.css. I tried to reproduce this error in Opera 11.01 by using "Test:File.png" as the upload filename and when I clicked Upload the upload form reported File name has been changed to "Test-File.png". Please modify the file description below and try again. The form displayed three buttons: "Submit...", "Ignore...", and "Return to the upload form...". I clicked the "Return to the upload form" and the description field was intact, not lost. Also the back button worked without losing the description field, in short the back button worked as I would expect. Howver, I noticed Opera navigation does not always work as expected, often with BBC news pages, back button just ignores the previous page visited and returns to the speed dial page. -84user (talk) 15:00, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

Derivative work upload not working

It is not working. It recognizes I am logged in. Then I enter the name of the image. Only after I add a space after .jpg does it do something. Then it says "File doesn't exist!" Clicking OK sends me to a page that says "Please wait. Start... no images received" Nothing happens. There is nothing to click. Clicking on that page does nothing. The derivative work upload worked for me recently too. It still has the problem of needing to add a space after the .jpg or .gif or other extension. Otherwise it will not upload the image.
