What is the point[edit]

What is the point of this when any image of a monument or building is deleted from Commons because the UAE has no 'Freedom of Panorama'??? Best Alexandermcnabb (talk) 14:54, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexandermcnabb only public domain monuments (that is, the architects or sculptors are already dead for more than 70 years) of the country can be shared here under commercial CC licenses. Current UAE FoP rules only permit free uses in broadcasts, not photographs. But had this event been consulted at the likes of COM:VP in the first place, I may vote oppose holding this photography competition until UAE copyright law has been changed to allow free uses of copyrighted structures outside broadcasts. We do not expect uploaders to honor the copyright law of UAE and the copyrights of architects or sculptors, as seen in the numerous deletion requests involving images submitted through this event. Note that I delivered this concern at the Village pump before (Commons:Village pump/Archive/2024/01#Consultation with Commons community before holding contests), and one interesting input from Alexandermcnabb holds that "virtually no building or monument in the country beyond a limited number of notable heritage sites is younger than 70 years." U.A.E. in the 1950s was only a collection of small coastal settlements. Without modern buildings of Dubai, I do not think the photo competition will serve its purpose of documenting full coverage of the country, other than only documenting Bedouin dwellings, palm trees, deserts and nature, the people, camels and other animals, food, aerial views of Palm Islands, and distant or wide views (not closeup views) of cities where buildings are just incidental (similar to both File:Dubai Skyline mit Burj Khalifa (18241030269).jpg and File:Dubai Skyline (25500263365).jpg). With the U.A.E. law only allowing free uses of copyrighted public artworks and architecture in broadcasts, the photo contest cannot achieve its complete goal of complete documentation of anything Emirati. By the way, here are some of the more recent FoP-related deletion nominations involving submitted images (via related changes of the category), majority started by me but a few by other users:

Arab books by emirati authors[edit]

Hello, I have question. I take an hour of my time to upload 20 pictures of Arabic books by Emirati authors, but the all the pictures get removed due to Wikimedia Rules for no pictures of book covers. What is the point of writing Arabic books by Emirati authors, when it will get removed? Ziank-photography (talk) 10:57, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Discussed at User talk:Túrelio#Deleted file. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 05:08, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have talked Turelio about this already, but he told to me to talk to you about this instead since you are hosting the competition. Ziank-photography (talk) 06:29, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ziank-photography, first of all, I didn't organize this photographic competition. I believe Reda Kerbouche is involved with the competition. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 09:30, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for letting me know anyway :) Ziank-photography (talk) 12:05, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
