Why is the Voting start at ERROR and the end too?

Question from Downtowngal[edit]

I have been and continue to be confused about the criteria I am supposed to use when voting for POTY. Neither the Rules nor the Introduction address this. Am I supposed to just pick what I like, aesthetically? Or take into account the rarity of the image? Or my perception of its usefulness for illustrating an article? Should I factor in the technical quality of the image? For example, the ravens at the Tower of London is a cute photo, but I think it has low usefulness for Wikipedia.

@Downtowngal: The criteria is entirely up to you, what you like, prefer, or willing to promote. It's as vague as 'good' or 'best' --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 19:19, 9 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This confuses me also. I'm looking at the maps and graphs category. Am I voting on the quality of the upload? What I learned from it? The usefulness on Wikipedia? The person who uploaded it is not the person who designed or drew the map or graphic so I don't really understand. The winner is the image not the uploader? And why are we allowed to vote for as many as we like? How can that narrow the selection down? My head is spinning... some guidance please.Sgerbic (talk) 18:16, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Downtowngal and Sgerbic: The candidates are the pictures that have been promoted to Featured Picture during 2017. If you're unfamiliar with that process, you can find some additional details here: COM:FPC. In a nutshell, they are the best Commons has to offer. They are evaluated for technical quality (sharp subject, high resolution, well-lit, good composition, etc.), educational/encyclopedic value (how well/uniquely it documents the subject, whether it's a difficult subject to capture, etc.), and a subjective "wow" factor. The extent to which each of these elements is considered varies, and excelling in one area can make up for shortcomings in another. Ultimately, however, they're FPs simply because at least 7 people said they should be featured, with no more than a third of participants opposing. As for POTY, people use all sorts of criteria. "Wow" tends to be a big factor; some people consider whether any of them are timely for the year; some people have a pet subject they tend to vote for... In the first round, there's no limit on votes; in the second round it's probably worth thinking about what you're going to prioritize. Hope this is helpful. — Rhododendrites talk23:17, 15 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your answers, my head is spinning a bit less now. So let me see if I understand this whole process. A person can nominate their own media or some other media for featured picture. Then people vote on that media, possible it can be altered, cropped or improved color or something and then people keep voting on it and the end result is that it might become an image that will be in the category for picture of the year. Once that happens, someone (or a committee) pick out all the best from that year and select judging dates and fill out the necessary "paperwork" to get banners made so that regular Wikipedia editors will know about this contest. Then we go through the first round which allows people with accounts (with some restrictions) to vote on all they want, in these categories and the reason why they vote for an image is really up to that specific editor. Then all the votes will be looked at and on a date that was set, whomever is in charge of this will take all the best images and it goes into round two for the best picture of the year were we go back and pick again but can only pick one image (I think that's what happens) and there will be a final winner. How's that? I've voted on the final image for a few years, but wasn't involved in round one. This is very enlightening, thank you and for everyone who is working on arranging this project. Question from Granada[edit]

Why is there no Category "Sports"? --Granada (talk) 07:29, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Alexis Jazz[edit]

Round 1 will begin on Error and end on Error Round 2 will begin on Error and end on Error

I am confused. I don't understand dates that don't follow the Gregorian calendar. - Alexis Jazz 12:13, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The dates have not been determined. I should really get some time to fix the category thing. @Steinsplitter: Can you get the CN banners? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 14:41, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is a new procedure at meta, we have to file requests for both banners and we need to know the timing. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:48, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
And people have to prepare the gallery at Commons:Picture of the Year/2017/Candidates, etc. etc. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:49, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Zhuyifei1999: have you created User:Zhuyifei1999/sandbox/2 to sort the images? Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:17, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but we are currently doing to do some changes to the categories and I simply can't find enough time to do it. :( It should be done no later than during the week of May 7. Feel free to help though. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:01, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Zhuyifei1999: can we just move the wikitext as it is in the section "dummy" e.g. File:ANZAC Parade from the Australian War Memorial, Canberra ACT.jpg|2017-01/87 <!--Places => None => (u'dummy', u'dummy')-->, or is this text (<!--Places => None => (u'dummy', u'dummy')-->) have to be changed too in the same time that an image is sorted? Christian Ferrer (talk) 18:12, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
They are auto-generated comments explaining how they were sorted into the categories. They don't serve much purpose technically so yes you can remove them. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 18:37, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well ok, thank you, I will try to help a bit Christian Ferrer (talk) 18:49, 22 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And when we are going to start this competition? We are not that far away from being half through 2018 now... 176.59.41.136 18:11, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It took an abnormally long time for the last few years' POTY dates to be confirmed let alone for the voting to begin. It would at least be good to have some dates, and it would be better if they weren't in April or later. --Mithunc (talk) 18:28, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Dllu[edit]

It seems that my photo of a Shinkansen N700A, which was promoted in Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/Line scan photo of Shinkansen N700A Series Set G13 in 2017, isn't showing up in Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2017/R1/Gallery/Vehicles_and_crafts. dllu (t,c) 21:07, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This set was promoted manually but was never added to the chronological list, as according to the procedure. Is there a reason for this manual promotion, considering the bot would do it anyways?
I'm not sure what's the best way to proceed here. Let's add it to Commons:Featured_pictures/chronological/2017-B#October_2017 with ID 107 and list it in POTY? It is unfortunate that those who have voted already may never notice the missing candidate. @Steinsplitter, FDMS4, Ham II, Christian Ferrer, and Moheen Reeyad: --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 00:01, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It was promoted manually because it is a set of 16 images. For some reason, FPCbot didn't automatically promote it, so I had to do it manually. I might have missed a step in the procedure since it was my first time doing that. dllu (t,c) 00:06, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Daniel78: Could you check why the bot failed, according to ^? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 03:05, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It would be unfair to add the picture now, first the vote started without this image, secondly the galleries are ready and visible to the public for some time and it is very likely that a number of people have already made certain choices before that the vote has begun. I suggest that exceptionally this image competes next year. Christian Ferrer (talk) 04:33, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Umm... it wouldn't be able to fit into any of the month galleries of next year. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 05:10, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
even if we force it manually? Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:27, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I guess we could try making it so that something like month = 0 won't show up in the category, but the question is whether doing so is fair. Setting to to any arbitrary 'month' won't make any sense (and we certainly can't create a special 'month' that contains only this image). Or @Dllu: Are you okay with the image being in next year's POTY, but it will not show up in any of the month galleries? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 05:36, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't voting only start yesterday afternoon? I've only just spotted that it is now live. I think it would be easier to include it ASAP unless Dllu is upset at missing one day's voting. -- Colin (talk) 10:33, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That said I have nothing against the fact adding the image. But if the image fails to go to the second round for 2 or 3 votes, I think we will have to do something. Christian Ferrer (talk) 10:55, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to add it [1] but my edit made a bug, and I reverted. I do not have the tecknic ability to add the image, someone else will have to do it. Christian Ferrer (talk) 11:08, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't support making this a special case (i.e. promoting to round 2 or 3). Either accept a lost of 1 days voting (only a handful of votes on each image so far) or go to next year. The winning images last year were well in the lead wrt votes so I don't think the lost of e.g. 6 votes is going to make a big difference. But up to Dllu. -- Colin (talk) 11:10, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think the set-closing-thing-would have to be fixed first per my answer at Commons talk:Featured picture candidates#POTY started. I could see if I could sort it out, but no guarantees since it was botched from the start. Do you want me to have a go? --Cart (talk) 11:22, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

(Edit conflict) Yes, please fix it on the FP side. @Dllu: Would you want either the picture be added back to the POTY this year (I can implement this), accept the loss of 1 day of voting, and we will not special case the image for the vote counting, or do you want the image be added to the next year, but that it will not appear on any of the month galleries? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 11:37, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ok, I'll see what I can do. I'll probably also have to break the special display of the photos in the nom so that the individual files can be transcluded through the system in a normal manner. I'll leave an edited-out version of the "single-image" as well in the nom. --Cart (talk) 12:00, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • File:Line scan photo of Shinkansen N700A Series Set G13 in 2017, car 01.png|2017-10/107 <!--Objects/Vehicles/Land vehicles => vehicle => (u'Vehicles and crafts', u'Vehicles and crafts')-->
This is my best guess at the moment since I don't have access to all the code. Fingers crossed! When you tried to add it before, the set didn't have a number designation in the chronological list and the files in the set were not listed in a Bot-friendly way. --Cart (talk) 12:36, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that works. The comment is optional. Commons:Picture of the Year/2017/Candidates/Sets also needs to be updated. Right now I'm waiting for Dllu's choice --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 12:46, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Colin[edit]

My two photos in a set:

Are being displayed differently depending on how the user views POTY. Both images appear in the month Commons:Picture of the Year/2017/R1/Gallery/M03 and subject Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2017/R1/Gallery/Objects, shells and miscellaneous galleries. But only one image (the white) appears in the full year Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2017/R1/Gallery/ALL and half year Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2017/R1/Gallery/2017-A galleries. It appears that voters on both images have their votes added to the one collective vote at Commons:Picture of the Year/2017/R1/v/Photoelasticity - TDK Head Cleaner - White background.jpg. This latter aspect seems fair (but is it documented anywhere?). But it seems unfair that one of the images is missing on two of our voting galleries. This seems to affect all Commons:Picture of the Year/2017/Candidates/Sets, and many of them have more members than mine. It has been suggested that the black-background image is the better of the two, so there is a significant disadvantage to it being missing from two voting galleries. Is it possible for the full and half-year galleries to be fixed to match the month and subject galleries in their completeness. -- Colin (talk) 09:52, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The latter two galleries are not technically voting ganneries and do not get processed by JS. They are generated using <gallery mode="packed"> of Module:POTY, which, do you have any idea how to make it display multiple images in the same place? We certainly don't want a set of 16 images have 16 entries in the gallery. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:57, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I didn't realise you couldn't vote from them. The title tab said "Voting pages" but I see now the main page makes it clear they aren't voting pages. Sets are always a bit of an anomaly. -- Colin (talk) 11:00, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question from The Yeti[edit]

I note that, at least in my browser, the pictures are arranged as large tiles in grid. Specifically, as picture, then beneath that a line, then beneath that the vote & info buttons, then beneath that the next picture, etc. Should not the line be underneath the vote & info buttons, not above. Else it gives the impression the vote & info buttons refer to picture below them, not the picture above. The Yeti (talk) 05:46, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I also get confused by this arrangement. The buttons are located on the same grey tile as the image above they refer too, but the line seems to be an unnecessary separation, and we don't really want to separate the buttons from their image. Fortunately the first time you vote, it becomes clear that the buttons are for the image above. Still, this is a UI people can't get familiar with, happening only once a year and with a high number of newbies. Perhaps the line can be removed, or reconsidered next year. -- Colin (talk) 07:15, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. I'll see if I can make this happen before R2. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:45, 14 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question: my photo File: Seeds ripening on Cyclaam Coum 02.JPG was in the end of 2014 third in the category plants and fungi. Is not the third place finalists?

File:Zaden_rijpen_aan_Cyclaam_Coum_02.JPG? No, it didn't end up in POTY 2014 R2. There were two slots per category for category tops to be eligible for R2, and the same applies for POTY 2017. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:44, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Majesty of the Commons[edit]

It did take an awful long time to fairly evaluate the 1260 R1 pictures. In future years can you limit this somehow, such as having photographers with many featured pictures choose a maximum of three to be entered? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Majesty of the Commons (talk • contribs) 13:45, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It'd take an unrealistic amount of time for us to contact each uploader (or photographer? will take even longer time to sort out) to choose the images. We'd have POTY 2017 in 2019. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 19:55, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Limiting submissions by creator could be automated: a script to send a notice to all photographers, and selection form (plus a random chooser for non-responders) linked to a cull script. Still too hard? Group R1 voting by photographer so it's quicker to narrow them down. Other suggestions? Weekly voting throughout the year as images are promoted, with those with a rank of over 1000 cut from the final yearly voting. Or allow voting on a single randomly-ordered list (per-user random seed, so there's no average unfairness to give up early). This random list could be split into groups of 20 to make it easier to return to the same point. This last suggestion is probably the easiest to implement while reducing both the voting burden and the resulting unfairness to images on lower voting lists. Majesty of the Commons (talk) 21:38, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Was it a chore to look through all those excellent photos? Perhaps you are evaluating each one too much. If it doesn't pop out at you as a great image, then it probably isn't a winner. POTY is just a fun popularity contest, I wouldn't take it too seriously, and it appears to be enough of a burden-to-organise as it is. -- Colin (talk) 12:40, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Praveenp[edit]

Question from Davey2010[edit]

Hi, For the final 3 images - Shouldn't it countdown so once you vote for your first image it says "You can vote for 2 images" and then for your second vote "You can vote for 1 image" and then third "You can vote for 0 images"

When you vote for your first and second image it still says "You can vote for 3 images in total" which might confuse people into thinking they have 3 images to vote for when infact they may have 2 or 1,

Not sure if this is a solution looking for a problem but just a suggestion anyway,

Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:09, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think 'in total' is clear enough. Fome some "You can vote for 2 images" might make them think like "You can vote for 2 images in total", confusing them. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 06:05, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fair point, Okay no worries like I say it was only a weak suggestion, Thanks anyway. –Davey2010Talk 14:50, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps there could be a simple counter; the message could read something like "Your first of three votes" followed by "Your second of three votes", then "Your third and final vote"? Should reduce potential confusion. Already placed my votes and damn hard it was with such an exceptional gallery. Thank you for the opportunity. Sounds like that would make changing the number from 3 to something else much much harder (translations :/). --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 10:03, 12 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Pyrhan[edit]

Hello,

I don't understand why, I can't appear to vote.

The control panel says : "Your account is ineligible because you do not have 76 or more edits on any attached SUL account or on Commons before 1/1/2018, 12:00:00 AM." However, the "rules and eligibility" page specifies "75 live edits on any single Wikimedia project", and I do have 135 edits on Wikipedia.

Why can't I vote then?

Thank you!

Pyrhan (talk) 15:02, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Pyrhan: You have less than 75 edits as of 31 December 2017: https://tools.wmflabs.org/meta/accounteligibility/47/Pyrhan I am sorry, but i have to confirm that you cannot vote in POTY 2017 :-(. Best --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:03, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. Most of my activity is a lot more recent than I thought. Thanks for the quick reply, @Steinsplitter: , and sorry for the trouble. --Pyrhan (talk) 15:12, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jdx[edit]

This account, which BTW probably is vandalism-only account, was created four days ago, so this vote should not be allowed, right? --jdx Re: 19:05, 13 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

They are not eligible anyways --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 04:01, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image Re-use checkup[edit]

I setup a new ratings website for the POTY 2017 finalists: https://fosiper.com/poty2017/ Could someone take a quick look and make sure the image re-use is in order? i.e. that the software is properly displaying media attribution, license info, etc. Thanks. - Shared Media Tagger Developer 1 (talk) 19:49, 14 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Shared Media Tagger Developer 1: This is interesting, Thank you!. We have a special js interface for local votes. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:43, 15 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter: you're welcome. The site will stay online indefinitely, so everyone please feel free to report any bugs or issues found. - Shared Media Tagger Developer 1 (talk) 06:54, 28 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Shared Media Tagger Developer 1: Please add a note to your third party web-page that the page is not officially affiliated with the Wikimedia Commons POTY, otherwise users and readers ar getting confused. Thank you --Steinsplitter (talk) 08:50, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter: Good idea. Any examples of other 3rd party sites with such disclaimer notes? Maybe the note should also mention non-affiliation with the wikimedia foundation? See the bottom of all pages within https://fosiper.com/poty2017/ and https://fosiper.com/poty/ for current disclaimer - Shared Media Tagger Developer 1 (talk) 11:48, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Looks fine :). --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:30, 29 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Screenshot of the top 5 scores from the Shared Media Tagger POTY 2017 ratings website <https://fosiper.com/poty2017/> as of 2018-07-30. The site beta testers successfully predicted the 1st place winner of the Wikimedia POTY 2017 competition.

Now that POTY 2017 results are final, I'd like to give a big thanks to the volunteers who beta tested the site. You all successfully predicted the 1st place winner! - Shared Media Tagger Developer 1 (talk) 17:25, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question from AntonierCH[edit]

Hello,

For the voter eligibility, you did not exclude the bot accounts. Is it on purpose?

Best regards,

"Even if a user has multiple eligible accounts, each user can only cast votes from one account." doesn't cover it? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 08:45, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
