Ogg is great. Do not forget mp2, though. Mpeg layer II have acceptable quality at higher bitrates and renamed to MP3 are quite compatible. I don't know if they can be tagged with ID3, though.

Mpeg is a patented format (all of them). Therefore it is incompatible with our goal of producing Free (with a capital F) content. Raul654 01:49, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I don't know anything about Windows Media Player, but I know that VLC will play these files correctly. In fact, VLC will play pretty much any audio/video file! - 220.237.119.76 14:26, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

I couldn't open the link directly but I found that it works if you save the file onto the desktop in its unknown status, then open Media Player up and open the file up from in there. It worked fine then :-) 84.69.240.188 02:07, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Can't encode mp4 properly

I can't seem to get ffmpeg2theora to encode file mp4 file correctly. I can see video of the resulting .ogg file in VLC, but I can't hear audio. I can watch other ogg/theora files from wikimedia with both video and audio, however. Can someone give my mp4 a try and see if you can convert it? I created the file on Mac in iMovie. I also tried exporting from iMovie to .dv; this crashed ffmpeg2theora. I also tried exporting to .avi first. This worked but the resulting file is 3 times the size of mp4, and video looked awful in avi. But ffmpeg2theora handled .avi without problem. Thanks! Fredhsu 11:34, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

OK, I exported Quicktime .mov from iMovie. ffmpeg2theora finally created an .ogg file with both video and audio. I uploaded it to this page. I can download the file again in my browser (firefox) and play it in Quicktime on Mac. But I can't seem to get the file to play in the Java player shown on the page. I can play other .ogg video files in Commons without problem. Does anyone know what is wrong? Fredhsu 04:11, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Theoretically though, you can convert with timidity++ (Well convert to wave, then convert to ogg). However as pfctdayelise said above, its best just to upload the midi. Bawolff 21:47, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Converting OGGs

I'm having a terrible time trying to convert the OGG Theora videos to anything that can be used in Adobe Premiere or After Effects. I've installed illiminable's codec and the videos usually play in Windows Media Player, but I've had no luck when I try to convert them with both MediaCoder and Winavi.

Winavi gives me a message saying "Can't decode this file! Maybe the file is broken or the relative decoder is not installed!" and MediaCoder instantly claims the transcoding is completed, but it doesn't seem to actually do anything. It always tells me that 8 MB (or whatever size the .ogg video happens to be) has been transcoded into 0.0 MB, and then it leaves a small 6KB file that won't open.

I've tried using both programs with multiple videos from this site on two different systems (XP and Vista) and I always get the same results. Anyone have any suggestions?

Certain type of bad codecs has been accidentally installed in your system that causes the problem. In order to fix this you have to install the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP), a codec pack with some commonly used video and audio codecs. It is one of the more reliable codec packs around, with filters to decode most file formats, including flv, mkv, and ogm.

Can I insert "thumbtime" code into video-uploads?

I need to choose a clear thumbnail for each video-clip so I'm adding thumbtime=n [1] to the template but wonder if it's possible to add this at upload time? Any advice most welcome. Aviceda 09:40, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Ogg sound/music files don't play

Hi. Yet a day before yesterday I could normally click on one of these files, let's say some country's national anthem, and it would play. But now, when I try to click "play" it just show this "more..." sign and nothing happens... for hours. Give Browser Links higher Priority

We should provide a "more simple" big "click here" direct link for Firefox 3.5. (or any other html5 compatible cross-platform ogg theora/vorbis compatible browser). Since Firefox supports native playback across platforms there is no need to list all the platforms before linking to Firefox. We could list the win/mac/unix platforms later on in the page under something like "more playback methods". -Mdale (talk) 01:12, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

I agree that the media help needs to show more on in-browser playback, not just playing back video. As it stands now, I think many Internet users are confused and think they need to download VLC in order to watch these videos. mahanga (talk) 07:06, 30 November 2009 (UTC)

Movable player

Hi

It would be very useful if the player could be move with the mouse or if it remains at the top whenever the page is scrolled down.

It is pretty annoying when you are following the text and have to pause and it is easy to loose track of where you where.

Ogg file not playing

on my own Wikimedia site ,I did almost everything I know to make the sound play but it came out as "save as a file"

Videos playing upside down and backwards.

I just downloaded the Ogg codecs for Windows Media Player, but upon playing, the video is rendered upside down and backwards.
