Notice This page is for discussion of the Graphics village pump itself. Instead you are probably wanting to post to: Commons:Graphics village pump.

I suggest we move it, this should be lower-case just like Commons:Village pump. Yonatan talk 00:58, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, and I suggest the further change of making "graphic" plural; "graphic village pump" would indicate a village pump that is graphic (*ahem*) while "Graphics village pump" indicates a village pump that is about graphics. I suspect we want the latter and not the former :) -- Editor at Largetalk 04:56, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I also thought that Graphics village pump sounded better but wasn't sure about it. Yonatan talk 13:51, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

+ tab needed?[edit]

Why doesn't this pump have a + tab like most village pumps? Will (Talk - contribs) 07:55, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It uses direct section editing instead - current edits are to Commons:Graphics village pump/July 2007. It could behave like a normal village pump if someone added __NEWSECTIONLINK__.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 15:02, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I did not add __NEWSECTIONLINK__ because I felt that it might have been omitted deliberately. Will (Talk - contribs) 05:33, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tried. It didn't work correctly because new sections would be added to Commons:Graphics village pump rather than the correct page, currently Commons:Graphics village pump/October 2007. The new section link code is incompatible with the way that this pump was designed by Yug and 82.244.80.175 (perhaps the same person).   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 22:18, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Auto-Conversion to bitmap formats on-request[edit]

I was looking for an image that I could use as a Windows Shortcut Icon. Windows only accepts ICO files. PNG and SVG might be great on the web, but Windows (at least XP) can't handle them. Could code be added to such that all image pages get a series of conversion links? The list below shows the conversions that I see as possible. This does not take into account whether image formats are free or not. I am not listing icon or cursor formats not used by Windows. Feel free to add them for me.

Windows Cursor (CUR) Yes† Yes† Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes n/a

*Operations involving this format might require non-free code.
**Images converted from this format will still have any JPEG artifacts.
***The page should ask for the compression level when converting to this format.
†This conversion will not provide any transparency.
††This conversion will strip out any transparency information.

I have formalized your enhancement request at bugzilla:11635.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 22:27, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly, Brion Vibber and Rob Church declined the request.   — Jeff G. ツ 17:39, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Page Admin[edit]

This page seems to need ever more monthly admin to keep it tidy - see the recent history. I don't really understand what is going on - some month end stuff seems to be done by some bot or other, but if so, it does not seem to me to be doing its job very well. Perhaps the page has been unwittingly restructured since originally conceived. It is also possible to add discussion topics and queries either to the main page or to the monthly sub page, which results in further muddle, especially when it is tidied up, but leaves a trail of wreckage in the history. Tutorial[edit]

Hello, I am developing a number of MediaWiki User/Developer related tutorials on Meta. One of the tutorial subjects is a "Media Specialist" training. I wanted to know if Common Users have developed or can recommend some instructional materials for adopting/training new users to contribute at the Graphics labs? How to get a list of all .svg files on Wikipedia.org and commons.wikimedia.org?[edit]

How to get a list of all .svg files on Wikipedia.org and commons.wikimedia.org?

Hi!

I do have a very slow internet connection. Nonetheless it would be fast enough to download a list of the files I'm looking for: I want a list of all .svg files on Wikipedia.org and commons.wikimedia.org. (And later on after that of all svg-files on the other wikipedia and wikimedia pages.)

But my internet connection is not fast enough to find the right search-words by trial and error: It's absolutly tedious to do trial-and-error with 64kbit/sec.

Could anyone point me to the right page on wikipedia or commons.wikimedia where I could start such a search and which keywords and settings to use?

Greetings John

Well, it's not a list, but you could start in category:SVG and browse the subcategories that you find interesting. Richard 08:17, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There are around 100k SVG files used in en.Wikipedia. This will likley result in >1 GB :). --Menner (talk)
I think you should post the request on your talk page to an Admin. They should be able to get it to you - as it will be about 1-4 MB only (file names only). I posted a request for all "India" related article names on Wikipedia English - and since the size was more than 1 MB an Admin asked me for my email ID. Once I sent him my email coordinates, I got the full list of about 140,000 article names. Hence, I think same process can be followed to get list of SVG file names only. Google search suggests it is in the range of 1M so it might be beyond your bandwidth. Shyamal (talk) 08:09, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Monthly archives for 2020[edit]

Can someone please check why monthly archives are not showing for yr 2020 on the main page — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ponor (talk • contribs) 16:09, 20 November 2020‎ (UTC)[reply]

@Ponor: Sorry, it is a manual process. I just added them for you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:16, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Monthly archives were way behind. Need standard archives[edit]

I added 2022 and 2023 links. See diff.

Why aren't better automatic archiving tools being used? Monthly is too often.

I believe non-dated archives should be used. After filling up to a certain number of kilobytes. a new archive is started automatically. This is standard archiving. And no one has to supervise it.

The old dated archives can be kept, and listed too. Nothing is lost. --Timeshifter (talk) 01:09, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
