Discussion 202306
- anyone can help draft the newsletter on this page.
- i always make a final draft at least 1 day before the 1st of every month, as well as the skeleton of the next draft. anyone can already start filling up the next draft if s/he wishes.
- after the newsletter is sent, its content is fixed. to edit fixed content, editors should write "addendum" or "erratum".
- @JWilz12345: you can add or suggest the info for the next draft on this page.
- @Multichill: i have noticed your opinion of word choice.
- i write according to my standards.
- i use the word "staff" as a collective term for all users (volunteers) with a position of sysop or further (namely sysops, bureaucrats, checkusers and suppress), who help maintain commons. take note, these are not all the users who help maintain commons.
- staff need not be paid or employed.
- to put it simply, if Multichill you want to change that word, you can come up with suggestions of words or phrases which i find better than "staff", or get a consensus to force me to write in a particular way, or write the draft by yourself, for the future issues. so long as it's 1v1, i have not found another better word, and i will not sign or deliver the newsletter if i do not agree with its contents.
- because this reply is too long and not related to the content of the newsletter, i reply here instead of vp.
RZuo (talk) 19:21, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- basically, the section heading means "changes to the team of sysops, bureaucrats, checkusers and suppress", but instead of this lengthy phrase i use "staff changes". i repeat, anyone is free to edit the draft. RZuo (talk) 19:27, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- @RZuo: At least in American English, "staff" usually implies an official/paid position (ie WMF) and would not generally be used for volunteer editors. I agree with Multichill that it's not the best word choice for this purpose. Perhaps something like "user rights" or "advanced permissions" would be clearer. - particularly, i dislike any term that implies seniority or hierarchy, as users tend to forget all users are equal. the "staff of wikimedia commons" are just users who have been given certain special tools to perform special tasks for which those tools are designed, in order to maintain commons. so i could call them janitors or concierges if i like.
- on the other hand, i do not accept terms that are so broad that they should include other user groups.--RZuo (talk) 20:25, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

Logo for the Commonswiki Gazette
I was thinking that the Commonswiki Gazette should have its own logo like the English-language Wikipedia's Signpost.
-
Concept logo 1.
-
Concept logo 2.
-
Concept logo 3.
-
Concept logo 4.
-
Concept logo 5.
-
Concept logo 6.
Personally I think that "File:Commons Gazette concept logo (Donald Trung Quoc Don) 01.svg" is probably the best fit as it's the most recognisable. It's basically the Commonswiki logo in black to symbolise it being "in print" (as newspaper 🗞️ logos are typically black because of historical reasons). Initially I thought about replacing the red circle in the middle with another icon, but after looking at them for sometime I think that the logo with just the black Commonswiki logo and the text "Commons Gazette" might be the best. If anyone else has other suggestions for a logo they could upload it. Concept logo 5 (five) looks like something that could be used for "talk page issues" with headlines if the Commonswiki Gazette publication ever grows to have the readership and engagement that the Signpost has. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:36, 7 June 2023 (UTC)

Discussion
i do not recommend including a logo in each issue, because it's not necessary (not carrying any message) and will be repetitive.
it's ok to put it on the main page or whatever though.
my opinion about this file is it looks ugly, because afaict it's horizontally squashed? why?--RZuo (talk) 11:17, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- RZuo, feel free to remove it if you think that it looks ugly. -- it's likely squashed because I tried editing it in Inkscape, but the font didn't co-operate well with how its displayed, it looks good in Inkscape, but the moment I uploaded it it had display issues. Also, The Wikipedia Signpost uses "In the news", but I'm not sure if that should be used for mere technical developments and announcements. -- — Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 11:18, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: you should also put down your name in the editors.--RZuo (talk) 10:23, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

- You may want to put Nigeria's change to their FOP in "In Other News" section since Nigeria changed their laws to something not acceptable for Commons. Abzeronow (talk) 18:21, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Abzeronow can you plz directly write a draft with references? RZuo (talk) 18:35, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, I can. I'll write up the draft in my Wikipedia Sandbox, and I'll put it in draft above when I'm finished. I'll see if I can finish within an hour. Abzeronow (talk) 19:08, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Copyright Changes Corner
On March 17, 2023, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Copyright Bill of 2022 into law[1]. It repealed the Copyright Act of 2004. It made changes to better synchronize with treaties such as the w:Marrakesh VIP Treaty and the w:Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances[2] and adopted a fair dealing exemption more in line with the United States than the previous law. [2]. As detailed in COM:FOP Nigeria, the new law says "the inclusion in an audiovisual work or a broadcast of an artistic work situated in a place where it can be viewed by the public."[No.8/2022 Sec. 20(1)(e)], whereas the now repealed law said ""The right conferred in respect of a work by section 5 of this Act does not include the right to control ... the reproduction and distribution of copies of any artistic work permanently situated in a place where it can be viewed by the public" which was similar to British FOP law. Since photographs are neither an audiovisual work or a broadcast, there would be no Freedom of Panorama exception for new uploads to Wikimedia Commons after March 17, 2023. The new law is not retroactive so files uploaded before March 17, 2023 would still have FOP apply.--Abzeronow (talk) 19:39, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

- @Abzeronow: i wrote a summary and moved your passage here. if you dont object, i'd post it to Commons talk:Copyright rules by territory/Nigeria and link it in the summary.
- one question though. does it mean videos of publicly visible works can be uploaded?
- besides, this happened in march, 3 months ago. it's not newsworthy anymore.--RZuo (talk) 21:14, 30 June 2023 (UTC)
- I realize that it's a little bit late but my attention was only called to it this month, and the FOP section for Nigeria was only changed in June. I could also expand a little more about the changes if you're going to link a "see more about this" since there were changes that I didn't list to keep it somewhat brief. Abzeronow (talk) 15:26, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
