Question[edit]

@Steinsplitter: Do you think it would be acceptable for general users to just occasionally remove some entries from this cat? I know it would only be a drop in the bucket, but it would help a little. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:57, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You can remove them from your own files, but no bot-edits please :). --Steinsplitter (talk) 18:29, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think that refers to use Cat-A-Lot or similar something, it allows up to 200 edits. And he refers to use it occasionally (e.g once a day). That's not much, but a little help. --Metrónomo's truth of the day: "That was also done by the president" not an excuse. 18:41, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's what I meant. Maybe two or three sets of 200 at a time using Cat-A-Lot, just when I happen to think of it. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:20, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Would cause unnecessary edits on the watchlist (i personally wouldn't oppose it, but not sure what the rest of the community thinks about it). But we could do a daily batch (10000 or so) using a bot. --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:40, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Delete it first?[edit]

Would it be a bad idea to delete the category first? And then let it slowly sink into the sand? Having the category as a red-link would encourage editors to remove it when making edits to files... Maybe this would speed things up a bit? Cheers, Rehman 15:11, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure if that is a good idea to have red links on x-files, but we could change hotcat to remove the category automatically. --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:32, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Steinsplitter. As discussed on IRC, I'm starting a discussion below on the way forward. Please do add further comments. Cheers, Rehman 02:55, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Phasing out this category[edit]

Ping: User:Taivo, User:Matma Rex, User:Jmabel, User:Auntof6, User:INeverCry, User:Ellin Beltz, User:Nyttend, User:ŠJů, User:Jianhui67, User:Zhuyifei1999, User:Rudolph Buch, User:Slowking4, User:Useddenim, User:Metrónomo.

Hi folks. Seeking your comments on how to go about with phasing out this category from Commons. Personally, I prefer updating HotCat and any bots possible, instructing them to remove the category simultaneously with any other edits made, while the category is deleted now. Deleting it now would get the attention of editors when they edit their files, and would also encourage them to remove the category in their edits. We should also modify UploadWizard to make it stop adding new files to this category.

Also, as per my discussion with User:Steinsplitter (on IRC), he is in favour of getting a bot to do about 10,000 edits a day, to expedite the removal of the category, regardless if it is done with another edit or not. Note that this doesn't flood watchlists as it will be done under a bot flag. I'm personally not in favour of this, but as per our discussion, we'd like to see what the community thinks. Looking forward to your comments. Kind regards, Rehman 02:55, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

is there a reason for the trouble? will you be able to tell apart images with wizard and images with old uploader? delete also pattypan and vicuna categories? Slowking4 § Richard Arthur Norton's revenge 03:01, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I could do 10k removals per day with cat-a-lot... I'm not a bot, but I can mimic one pretty well... lNeverCry 03:05, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, please ask for a bot flag (or a flood flag like some other wikis). --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 05:42, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    Heh, I didn't asked for a bot flag for PF95-SAuto while processing tons of files... Poké95 05:55, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, It isn't a big problem to do remove x-files from cat per day and cleanup them as well (clanup is needed for only a few files in the cat). The question is do we want to edit +10000 files. Or do we want to hide the cat with js/css or whatever. Btw: It is now part of YaCBot (but cat will only be removed if a other cleanup task is needed) --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:58, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I support removing this category from files as long as it is not massive for those users without a bot flag (and vice versa). Good I stopped using UW already, otherwise I need my dormant semi-automatic account to remove UW's category from all my files... I can help in the phase-out using my dormant bot account, if there would be a few bots working on this. BulbaBot will be happy Poké95 03:18, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sakto, I made a discussion on VPC before about Judgefloro's files, and he said that all his files are in the public domain, despite all of them being licensed under CC-BY-SA-4.0. I was planning to make a bot request for it, but it seems I am not ready yet until this. Judgefloro's files were uploaded via UW, so I can make my bot change cc-by-sa-4.0 to PD-self while removing the UW category. Joining the party now :D Poké95 03:37, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a reasonable approach to me. Useddenim (talk) 03:27, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've sometimes done one or two catalot batches of 200; it's not a big amount, but it helps a little. I'm opposed to deletion at least until the patch is added: we ought not have a nonexistent category being added to new uploads. I don't know about deletion before it's emptied (I'm tending toward opposing the idea), but at least let's wait until we won't get any new images added. Just modify bots' source code by instructing them to remove the category from images that they're already editing, and we can then do a bot run just for removing this category when it's been long enough that we're confident that the first bot run has done essentially all that it will. Nyttend (talk) 04:52, 22 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Patch was merged and it seems the category is not being added anymore (cfr. File:Мамин Владимир Наркиссович (1864-1909) в 1907.png). —MarcoAurelio 15:27, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question by Base[edit]

Well I obviously missed the discussion but will write my IMHO/question anyway. I usually upload files with Special:Upload rather than via Upload Wizard. Unlike some external tools this way is actually does not leave any traces to compare it with UW except for not having a dumb upload summary (one of the main reasons for my choice actually). Do I now have to mark uploads with Special:Upload somehow so that statistics still could be fetched in case one wishes to do it? --Base (talk) 21:53, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There was never a way to track uploads via Special:Upload. Why? Because Special:Upload accepts the full set of raw parameters - there is no default summary or category. This here just affects UploadWizard uploads. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:41, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Statistics[edit]

@Steinsplitter: Long time ago, there was a statistics about the temporal evolution of UploadWizard share. Your query only delivers the actual value. How do I get such a statistics?--Kopiersperre (talk) 16:06, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Kopiersperre: Something like this? --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:00, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter: Are this the UW-Uploads every month since it's introduction? If yes, I would need the total uploads in this time for comparison. Is it possible to get this for other events like bot upload or flickr upload, too?--Kopiersperre (talk) 17:04, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. Comparison is possible, but it is more work because you have to extend the query with x-lines. For simple stuff just change the log_comment section. --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:16, 9 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Kopiersperre: Tools which use specific upload summaries or tags are easy to identify, others are more difficult. I'm not sure how people usually transfer files from Flickr, but it seems Commons:OAuth Uploader is used often, and it's identified by a tag.
I've actually written some queries to compare the number of uploads between different tools in detail recently, for T144992 Find out how new anti-copyvio abusefilters are affecting uploads. The results posted there are only for a span of 50 days, but I posted the queries too and they should be easy to adjust. Matma Rex (talk) 01:39, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter: Out of curiosity, do you know why the uploads spike every September? Also, more relevant to this cfd, do you think the reasoning behind this old cfd's keep outcome is no longer valid? I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in the recent vote. ɱ (talk) 03:15, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@: As elaborated in my closure, tech department is okay with deletion. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:35, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@: They spike every September because of the Wiki Loves Monuments contest. We no longer use this category for statistics, as I mentioned in the CFD, it's easier and more reliable to look at the upload comment generated by UploadWizard (I work for WMF's Multimedia team). Matma Rex (talk) 15:16, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info. ɱ (talk) 20:15, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cat-a-lot[edit]

Is it possible to change the categorie in a way that cat-a-lot may be used? --Havang(nl) (talk) 11:54, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ideally some Javascript experts like Rillke or Lupo should implement this, but @Steinsplitter: do you think it can be a part of "Remove {{Check categories}} and other minor cleanup" of MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js (perhaps I'll change it to "Remove {{Check categories}}, [[Category:Uploaded with UploadWizard]] and other minor cleanup")? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 12:28, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Havang(nl): Good idea. @Zhuyifei1999: It should be okay, but likely living the summary as is? Feel free to change :-). --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:49, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Implemented Special:Diff/212859882 --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 13:38, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Removing with Bot flag[edit]

I wonder why many of these 9.5 million images are removed manually, without a Minor change flag or Bot flag. I suggest to allow this to be done by bot only. HenkvD (talk) 10:59, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Removing manually with cat-a-lot was very fast, (I did 40.000, in one hour, but got blocked for that) but how to make it done with a bot flag? Is it a good idea - and is it possible - to programme cat-a-lot in such a way that it marks all cat-a-lot category changes with a bot flag, independent of user? --Havang(nl) (talk) 14:32, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Cat-a-lot is very fast, but I believe we didn't want it used for this, especially on a large scale, because it would flood recent changes and people's watchlists. The bot indicator is based on the account making the change, not on whether Cat-a-lot is being used. We wouldn't want Cat-a-lot changes to always be flagged as bot changes because that would suppress them all from recent changes. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:18, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You learn me things I didn't know. Continue thinking it over: Is there a possibility to create a cat-a-lot-form with a bot-flag only applicable to this specific category? Many hands make the this 10 million job lighter. --Havang(nl) (talk) 19:38, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, the current MediaWiki implementation of bots is: if your account doesn't have the bot right ("Be treated as an automated process", which is only granted to the bot group), you cannot mark an arbitrary edit of yours as bot edit. As for cat-a-lot being trusted somehow to bypass that restriction, no, cat-a-lot is running on client side (your browser) and therefore cannot be trusted to bypass any restrictions. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 11:46, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Can't Catalot be used with bot acc? --Base (talk) 08:20, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I am running my bot for this task. I imagine other bot operators are running too. This may take some time. :p -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 00:53, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
