@DiSchreck: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photos as a new user. Such uploads of png photos are not allowed at all. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them as-is, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. Also, the png version will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, a photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:45, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
The .pngs are understandable and not problematic; the upload error helped illustrate proper use of images and were part of an educational session. The .jpegs are, as noted, my personal photos. As such, they are not copyright violations. Two of the photos were full sized images taken from my camera, hence my confusion (smaller does not always indicate images taken from the web). Thank you for the upload wizard tip. It is worth exploring. DiSchreck (talk) 12:24, 1 April 2022 (UTC)

Proposed change of cross-wiki upload edit summaries (third attempt)

A couple of months ago, I proposed changing the upload comment used for cross-wiki uploads because it keeps confusing people. There seems to be a consensus for the change and after some discussion we seem to have consensus on the correct wording as well. There are some abuse filters that will need to be updated to match any change. Please could any abuse filter that currently matches "Cross-wiki upload from" be changed to also match "Uploaded while editing"? Once the wiki configuration is updated, the older string can be removed. Ideally, abuse filters use the cross-wiki-upload tag rather than the human-targetted edit summary, but I don't think abuse filters can currently see tags.

Of the public filters, I've found the following that are affected:

  • Special:AbuseFilter/153 "Cross-wiki upload from" in summary("Cross-wiki upload from" in summary | "Uploaded while editing" in summary)
  • Special:AbuseFilter/156 summary irlike "(Cross-wiki upload from|logo|cropped)"summary irlike "(Cross-wiki upload from|Uploaded while editing|logo|cropped)"

There may be some that I've missed, or some private ones that I can't see.

I've requested this here twice before with different wording, but there were some objections to the use of "own work" on the grounds that uploaders might not have intended to claim the uploaded work as their own. The new wording seems to have satisfied these objections.

Pinging @Steinsplitter, Achim55 as admins with interest in these filters (suggested by Jeff G.). --bjh21 (talk) 14:15, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

Also Special:AbuseFilter/158. I don't see any private filters. -- CptViraj (talk) 03:54, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
Ah yes; well spotted. I think the change there is the same as for abuse filter 153: & !"Cross-wiki upload from" in summary& !("Cross-wiki upload from" in summary | "Uploaded while editing" in summary). --bjh21 (talk) 10:09, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
@Bjh21: I avoided processing this request as I haven't worked with AF management in past. But it looks like no one else is interested or isn't available, so I'll give this a shot. But first I would like to know if is it certain that sysadmins will accept the change? so we don't end up making useless change in AFs. -- CptViraj (talk) 05:19, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
@CptViraj: They certainly will not accept it until an Admin here makes a change here first.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:09, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I know. What I'm asking is that will they agree to accept this proposed change in summaries, If yes, only then we should make changes to AFs. -- CptViraj (talk) 13:55, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
@CptViraj: There is no certainty. From m:Requesting wiki configuration changes: "Gaining on-wiki consensus and filing a task does not guarantee that the request will be fulfilled." If you'd like, I could try opening the request now to see if we can get approval in principle from the sysadmins first.
I have worked out a way to make the abuse filter changes safer. Rather than editing the existing abuse filters, you could duplicate each of them and edit the duplicates to match the new summary. Then the old filters would be guaranteed still to work and if you're being really cautious the new ones could be run in testing mode for a while to make sure they don't catch anything before the change is deployed. --bjh21 (talk) 14:13, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
@Bjh21: Yeah I know they will still work with the old summary. But it's just that I'm not keen to make changes to AFs unless sysadmins agree for deploying the summary change as we could end up making redundant change (I know it's harmless). So if you don't mind, can you please first fill the task to see if it's allowed or not? Thanks! -- CptViraj (talk) 14:39, 1 April 2022 (UTC)
I've opened a task: phab:T305303. I hope I've made it clear enough that we don't want the change actually made yet. --bjh21 (talk) 13:53, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
Majavah has said on Phabricator, "I don't see any reasons not to implement that change globally if there's consensus to do so on Commons." --bjh21 (talk) 19:13, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

@GU2022: Hola y bienvenido.

I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. I followed your advice and used the Upload Wizard. It was my coin and I took the photos before giving the coin to a school today. I was a Wiki editor years ago but lost my user ID, which is why I show as a new user. As for the PNG, it was because I wanted to put the two sides of the coin in a single photo, in keeping with the other coin pictured on the page. Unfortunately, Microsoft Paint default saves to PNG - which I thought was superior to JPG, so kept.
Thanks for your help,

@Pbisacc: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin as-is, so you may need to license it on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. You may store copies of your wikitext in your user space on a project as long as it fits the project's scope, and offline or on non-WMF projects as long as you and the project owners and admins want.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:27, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

@SimplyWebServices: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg images as a new user. Each jpg image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller images, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you made the images yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the images, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them as-is, and have the copyright holder(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the images and permissions via VRT with carbon copies to you. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:49, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
The image is a scanned copy of the cover of the first issue of the magazine. So it would not have EXIF data associated with it. This is an exteremly hostile environment, with error messages that have no attached documentation to them so users can fix the issue on their own. In this case, it didn't state that my image was too small. In fact just about every other place you upload an image to, they want it smaller and here I users have to guess that they want them larger. @Morita Akio: Hi, and welcome. I'm sorry to inform you that you have experienced a bug with Special:ImportFile triggering Special:AbuseFilter/4 because at least one edit to the original file was empty; the bug has been reported at phab:T213409 and phab:T215429. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to import such files yet because you have neither the "autopatrol" user right nor 200 edits on Wikimedia Commons. I imported File:IriverTD.jpg for you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:18, 16 April 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks for doing the importing yourself. There were a few other images with valid licenses that I also wanted to import, but from another language Wikipedia, namely these on the Japanese Wikipedia: 1 2. I didn't find any option of exporting those to Commons. Are you able to do that for me? --Morita Akio (talk) 17:22, 16 April 2022 (UTC)
@Morita Akio: I would not be comfortable doing that due to my unfamiliarity with the language (although Google Translate might help) and your unfamiliarity with COM:DW. Both files seem derivative of Sony's user interfaces. Perhaps Miya could better assist you with that.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:08, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks, I have reported that issue to Miya. Also, there is another image file on Wikipedia (English) that can be exported: image. I would appreciate if you could export that one as well. --Morita Akio (talk) 21:25, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

@Sam ATN: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png logos as a new user. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated they are your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of each per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata, but they may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license them on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logos may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:32, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

@Prakashmagare1234: Hi, and welcome. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it as-is, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. Page name: Bob Crane (Bob Crane links: histlogsabuse logen:Bob Crane)
Edit kind: Trying to upload a photo of Bob Crane's blood taken during his autopsy in 1978. This blood vial was crucial for later DNA testing performed by Body/Cellmark in 2016. The picture was taken by on John Hook's camera and is his property. No rights issues.
Comments: This is an exceptionally strong visual that should be added for context. Bob Crane's blood/DNA was found in evidence at the Maricopa County Attorney's Office by reporter John Hook (pictured) which was critical in later DNA testing . Johnhook21 (talk) 21:40, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
