@Ddeckwerth: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png photos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, it will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg version which will look sharper, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 06:58, 2 January 2021 (UTC)

The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer post Commons:Licensing compliant permission for such work on their website or social media presence or send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:11, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

Edit kind: I tried to delete [[Category:Henry Wadsworth Longfellow]], since the page has no apparent connection with Longfellow. "An automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive, and it has been disallowed."
Comments: It isn't "unconstructive" for a human editor to delete an inappropriate Category, and a bot should not be making this judgment. 24.191.101.223 02:34, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
Good catch. I removed the category. Your edit was blocked by filter 27, which prevents removal of all categories. And since Category:Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the only category in the wikitext, and you're not autoconfirmed (IP users cannot get autoconfirmed because it requires an account), the filter blocked your edit. Please don't take it personally. It didn't say that your edit was unconstructive, it only said it has the potential to be unconstructive, and that if it's wrong you should report here, which you correctly did. pandakekok9 07:41, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
@Pandakekok9: Thanks for the quick response. I just added [[Category:Plant spores]], so the Heterospory image won't be completely uncategorized. If the filter could perhaps report "Non-autoconfirmed users may not remove every Category from the wikitext", or maybe provide your link to Filter 27 automatically, the warning message would be more helpful than just saying "potentially unconstructive and disallowed". —24.191.101.223 12:03, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, it seems the disallow message used by the filter is insufficient. I will draft a new message for that filter soon. Thanks, pandakekok9 12:32, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
Welp, the "soon" took 6 days, sorry for the wait. I was busy in real life, as well as helping a small wiki... The draft message can be seen here. I'd like to hear your thoughts first before I propose it at COM:AN. Thanks, pandakekok9 03:48, 8 January 2021 (UTC)
@Pandakekok9: I suggest you change "We suggest adding a new category that is relevant to the file you're working on, if your edit is constructive." to "Please add a new category that is relevant to that file or keep at least one old category."   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:16, 8 January 2021 (UTC)

MUCH more informative than the old warning, thanks! I'd further suggest saying "prevent possible vandalism" (to assume good faith), and changing "a new category" to "another category" (not to encourage inventing one that doesn't yet exist). —24.191.101.223 02:53, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

@Salman Mubarak: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. @MikeM1010: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Welcome to Commons. Also, mas maganda siguro kung magparequest ka ng rename ng username which suggest that you are an individual operating the account, hindi shared. Pero kung gusto mong panatilihin ang ganyang pangalan, magpaverify ka sa OTRS. Salamat! pandakekok9 07:53, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

Problem of Newbies to Upload Photos

Hi, we are part of the Wikipedians of Goa User Group and are having problems when we ask some newbie volunteers to upload their photos to Wikimedia Commons.

User: MariaLJSGomes ... some good Goa food pics I just received a message from them requesting me to confirm my account. I was able to successfully log in. However same problem with the upload tab. It's not opening when I click on it. ... When I click on upload it takes me to the below page... But the upload tab is not working when I click on it... get to this page and then asked to log in. Basically the first two pictures I sent you...

It takes you back to the same page. Also, it rejects the photos as being "unsure whether suitable for Wikimedia". Because the photos are of food, some look a bit muddy in colour (Indian/Goan food, a lot of browns...)

ANOTHER USER (whose usename am not sure about) SAID: Hi trying to log into the account to upload the pictures but just cannot any other way I can do so..

Please help. We need these photos to be shared. Fredericknoronha (talk) 13:15, 18 January 2021 (UTC)

If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their official websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. Also, the png version will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744), so you may want to upload a jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the photo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:26, 28 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jedischultz: Also note that just because you're the webmaster, doesn't mean you hold the copyright of the photos. You will need permission from the photographer. If you're the photographer, then I suggest uploading the original resolution (which should be at least 2MP), or uploading it via the Upload Wizard. pandakekok9 03:36, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

(filter output:) An automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive, and it has been disallowed. If this edit is constructive, please report this error.

Comments: Inspired by the discussion at File talk:WHO Covid C Palestine.pdf, I found that the best way to centralize the general information about my image set is a gallery page. Creating the page was blocked by the abuse filter. The page contents can still be seen at User:Jochen Burghardt#SANDBOX. I guess, the high text to image ratio triggered the filter. If there is a better way than to use a gallery page, please suggest it to me. Jochen Burghardt (talk) 10:07, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jochen Burghardt: Hi. Would you consider making the page User:Jochen Burghardt/WHO Covid diagram set, or using an actual gallery tag?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 17:02, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks for your quick answer. Creating the page in my user space would be fine, provided it works. To consider your second alternative, I'd need to know what an "actual gallery tag" is. Where can I find information about that? - Jochen Burghardt (talk) 19:30, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jochen Burghardt: Please see this edit for an example addition of a gallery tag 16 years ago, before we had filter 122 in place.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:42, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Using <gallery> worked fine. Many thanks for your time. As far as I am concerned, this issue can now be closed. It might be a good idea to include a hint like "the page you wanted to create didn't contain a <gallery> tag" in the filter response for cases like mine. - Jochen Burghardt (talk) 13:24, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
@Jochen Burghardt: I'm glad to read that it worked for you. Please preview your use of {{Ping}}. Pinging @Steinsplitter, Billinghurst as editors of MediaWiki:abusefilter-warning-gallery.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:57, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Comment @Jochen Burghardt: Commons gallery namespace expects a <gallery> and you didn't give it one, see Commons:Galleries. There is a link in the error message provided MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-gallery. If there are some suggestions of how we can improve a part of the process then please let us know.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:12, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

The error message doesn't baldly say use the tag, as the filter is stopping abuse, and giving it away rather. Further we don't always want galleries and they considering the criteria for a gallery and whether they are truly of value was considered a greater benefit.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:17, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
On my second attempt to create the page, I just got the error message that is now shown in the screenshot File:Abuse filter msg.gif. Clicking the link then brought me here. If the <gallery> tag had been mentioned in the message, I wouldn't have bothered any of you with my issue. Probably I better should have read the gallery guidelines which where linked from the error message on my first attempt. - Jochen Burghardt (talk) 14:55, 31 January 2021 (UTC)
