Internationalization

[edit]

For internationalization efforts, we should use {{LangSwitch}} rather than other translation templates. Langswitch hides the other languages from view and doesn't display "English" (for example) before the English translation.

Syntax: "|xx= Your translation " (xx being the code of your language)

{{LangSwitch|en=English text|ru=Russian text}} or

{{LangSwitch
|en=English text
|ru=Russian text}}

Do you want to rename the page as well?--Ymblanter (talk) 18:46, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I still don't know what the translation is, so I think yes. Is there a way to internationalize the page title? Or will it have to be moved? What do you suggest? Laura1822 (talk) 19:19, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It has to be moved, unless we deliberately want to keep it in Russian. Smth like Commons:Misidentified persons?--Ymblanter (talk) 19:30, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine with me, but since several people are working on the page right now, it might be wise to wait a few days, or until you are sure no one else is editing it at the moment. Laura1822 (talk) 22:12, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe Commons:Misattributed portraits? --Kaganer (talk) 23:33, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:Misidentified portraits (as you suggest below) is better. I like "portraits" better than "persons," and "attribute" specifically connotes something about the artist in English: a misattributed portrait is one that was thought to be by one artist when it was really by another one. Laura1822 (talk) 12:06, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this is better than what I suggested.--Ymblanter (talk) 14:34, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Using {{LangSwitch}} is bad way for pages, such as this one. I propose using {{LangSwitch}} as first step of internationalization only. After renamig this page, expansion table as needed, and filling english texts, I am ready to add translation markup for convert this page into trasnslation system based on mw:Extension:Translate. --Kaganer (talk) 21:23, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please teach me the proper template usage (as you suggest) when we are done with the first pass of translating. I have been editing files using {{LangSwitch}} for the reason I stated above, but if this is deprecated, I would like to know the new way.
I was about to suggest using {{w|article title|text to display}} instead of [[:en:article title|text to display]] and [[:ru:article title|text to display]] because I think the {{w| style will work for both and so be easier. But I am not sure. What is the correct way to do that? Thanks! Laura1822 (talk) 22:07, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, see bellow. --Kaganer (talk) 23:15, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed migration process

[edit]

Proposed columns

[edit]
# English name Russian name Comment
1 Portrait Портрет Image in Commons
2 Misidentification Считалось
3 Proper Identification По-настоящему
4 Off-wiki history История вне вики Off-wiki identification / mis/re-identification history (emphasizing where outside media appear to have relied on the Commons image and its misidentification)
5 Wiki history Вики-история History of use in the Wikimedia Sites
6 Status Состояние Renaming, replacing in the articles, ...
7 References Примечания All links to internal/external discussions and other related issues

Maybe something more? Please comment this! --Kaganer (talk) 23:36, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me! (Except that I would prefer "misidentified" to "misattributed." as I explain above.) (Note: I changed this in the table above.) I would ideally like to see a link somewhere to whatever pertinent discussions exist. Sometimes they are a little hard to find when the file has been renamed. Good work! Laura1822 (talk) 12:06, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe add column "References" or "Related links" (for all links to internal/external discussions and other related issues)? --Kaganer (talk) 20:01, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is better than expecting people to remember to put it in Wiki history! Laura1822 (talk) 16:49, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Stages of migration into multilingual state

[edit]

Proposed procedure:

  1. Rename this page into consensus English name (e.g. Commons:Misidentified portraits)
  2. Split the available texts in the new structure of the columns
  3. Improving Russian texts to more unified description style; adding more reference links
  4. Copy current page into "/ru" subpage
  5. Replacing all Russian texts into English texts
  6. Adding translate markup; mark this page as translatable (as Help:Contents, as example)
  7. Importing Russian texts as translations.

It's all. ;) --Kaganer (talk) 23:36, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have no experience with this sort of thing, so I support any process that makes it easier for people to help. At some point I would like to add the portraits I personally have found and corrected. Those will then need to be translated into Russian. We will eventually need to provide a clear procedure for editors who come after us to add images and translations into other languages. Also, eventually I would want to edit the descriptions on each file's page to explain the previous error, so that others won't try to change it back. But those are for the future, after this page is in order. Laura1822 (talk) 12:06, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, need to execute steps 1-5 (by common efforts); after this I do steps 6-7. --Kaganer (talk) 19:58, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you divide the page into sub-pages by language, is there some sort of automatic process to handle adding new images? It seems to me that if you subdivide into a Russian page and an English page, then when I add an image to the English page, it will be missing on the Russian page. Would you please explain the process a little? Laura1822 (talk) 14:31, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
After migration, all new changes will be added in English page only. All other subpages (translations) will be protected from direct editing (only through translation interface). If translation of some string is not present, displayed english text. --Kaganer (talk) 19:48, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe need to design process, where problematic portraits "in progress" is served in any language, but after some finalisation these item is added to common table in english, to further translation in other languages. --Kaganer (talk) 19:53, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe also need to added new portraits discusion as separate subpages (as RfD process), and only short resume be include in translatable table? --Kaganer (talk) 19:58, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Known problems

[edit]

Internationalization of wikilinks to Wikipedia articles - is problem. Maybe need to use Wikidata... --Kaganer (talk) 23:40, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata is beyond me, but I support any change that will improve usage and internationalization. Laura1822 (talk) 12:06, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Currently the functionality necessary to us, still in the testing mode. --Kaganer (talk) 11:36, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

sort order

[edit]

How is the table sorted? Or would you prefer me to add my images in a separate table for now while we work on the translation? Laura1822 (talk) 16:44, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

it was chronological... I don't know what to choose. --Shakko (talk) 17:39, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps chronological by date of the underlying artwork? (Subdivided by century?) I'm open to other suggestions. It just seems rather random now. Laura1822 (talk) 22:13, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Another option is to group them thematically (mistresses, tsars, poets and politicians, nobility). Laura1822 (talk) 14:33, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
maybe by country of origin of the "mistaken" person? Russia, England etc. And the funniest list above. Shakko (talk) 17:15, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

File renaming

[edit]

I have filemover status, which means I can change the names of the files where needed. As a filemover, when I change a name, a request is automatically posted to the bot that corrects all of the file links throughout all projects. Filemover requests are given priority by the bot, so they are usually done within a few hours. So unless there is some complication I don't know about, this will be easy to do. Laura1822 (talk) 16:57, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

more table columns?

[edit]

Perhaps it would be useful to add one or two more table columns, to record and keep track of actions. For example, one for "File renamed? y/n" and maybe one for "File description altered with explanation? y/n" or similar. There might be a few others that would help us to see what needs to be done. Laura1822 (talk) 17:00, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

ok. do with the translated part of the list anything you wants, while I'll do translating automatic work. --Shakko (talk) 17:41, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
After we you are done with translating, then I'll evaluate. Just thinking ahead. Laura1822 (talk) 22:15, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Добрый день. А почему там написано композитор Питер Лели а не композитор Генри Перселл? IKhitron (talk) 14:34, 1 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@IKhitron: Спасибо, стоило пинговать кого-нибудь из участников проекта ;) --Kaganer (talk) 14:15, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Спасибо, @Kaganer: , я бы так и сделал, если бы имел понятие о существовании проекта. IKhitron (talk) 14:58, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ну видно же, кто страницу правит. Придется написать явно, как нынче принято ;) --Kaganer (talk) 15:09, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
