Headline: The first Wiki Loves Public Art photo contest brings artworks online

Subheading: The contest sets out in May as volunteers take pictures of artworks and upload their photos under a free license so that they can be used for online projects such as Wikipedia

[Stockholm, Sweden -- 24 April 2013] – People in Sweden, Spain, Finland, Israel and Austria are participating in improving online access to artworks as the Wiki Loves Public Art, WLPA, photo contest kicks off in the beginning of May. The goal of the contest is to get as many pictures of public art available under a free license on Wikipedia’s online image database, Wikimedia Commons. The photos can then be seen and used by anyone, anywhere and at the same time the world’s sixth largest website, Wikipedia, will see a boost in its art coverage as photos in the contest can be added to illustrate articles in the online encyclopaedia.

“We are organizing this contest to increase our common collection of photos of artworks and make them easily accessible to everyone through Wikipedia. This is also a fun way to start contributing for volunteers as they can go and take pictures of their favourite artworks with the chance of winning great prizes”, says the international WLPA coordinator John Andersson.

The Wiki Loves Public Art contest is organized by Wikimedia Sverige, Europeana and volunteers in the Wikimedia chapters and affiliated groups in each of the participating countries.

The photos uploaded for the contest will first be judged nationally, after which the ten best pictures from each country will be sent to the international jury. The prizes for the three internationally best pictures – which will be announced in July – are travel gift certificates for 500 euros, 300 euros and 200 euros and on top of that Europeana has sponsored high quality prints of the winning pictures that will be sent to the winners.

An International Movement

From the start the contest has focused on being international. The contest builds on the remarkable success of the annual Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest, which take place between 1-30 September every year. Last year with an incredible 15,000 photographers from 33 countries around the world uploading more than 350,000 photos.

“This is the first Wiki Loves Public Art photo contest so we are doing it in a bit smaller scale this year to try out the concept, but of course we hope to be able to arrange WLPA also in the coming years with even more countries and participants. This is all possible through the support of Europeana and the hard work of all the great Wikimedia volunteers", Andersson states.

What makes the contest a little bit more difficult to organise is that most countries lack a national database of their artworks. In addition the countries participating in the contest have a diverse set of copyright laws, so that the public artworks that can be photographed for the contest differ between countries. For example, in Finland the contest focuses on outdoor sculptures, whose creator has been dead for 70 years or more. In Spain and Austria on the other hand any public artwork can be photographed.

“With WLPA we are also trying to raise awareness of copyright laws and the fact that in some countries national legislation can even make you a criminal for taking photos of publicly owned artworks outdoors, the same artworks you pass on your way to work or school everyday”, states John Andersson.

To make it easier for people to find the artworks suited for the contest volunteers in national Wikimedia chapters have put together lists on Wikipedia with information about the outdoor artworks. In some countries the focus has however been on working with the national art museums so that people can go there and take photos of the museums' collections that are suitable for the contest.

Wiki Loves Public Art - en fototävling med konst i fokus

Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA) är en internationell fototävling som arrangeras av Wikimedia Sverige, Europeana och av wikimedia-volontärer i fem olika länder. Volontärer i Sverige, Spanien, Finland, Israel och Österrike deltar i tävlingen som arrangeras primärt med syftet att öka tillgängligheten av bilder på offentlig konst online, under fria licenser. Bilderna laddas upp på Wikimedia Commons och kan då lätt användas på Wikipedia, världens sjätte största webbplats.

”Vi anordnar tävlingen för att öka vår gemensamma fotosamling med konst samt göra bilderna lättillgängliga för alla genom Wikipedias artiklar, var som helst och när som helst. Det är ett roligt sätt att komma igång och bidra som volontär och genom att fotografera sin favoritkonst är man också med och tävlar om olika fina priser”, säger John Andersson, internationell koordinator för WLPA.

Fotografierna som laddas upp till tävlingen kommer först att bedömas av en nationell jury, där de tio bästa bilderna från varje land väljs ut och skickas vidare till den internationella juryn.

Tävlingen i Sverige fokuserar i år på den äldre konst som finns hos våra olika konstmuseer och som är Public Domain (d.v.s. där konstnären varit död i 70 år).

”Inom ramen för tävlingen samarbetar vi med några av Sveriges viktigaste och mest spännande konstmuseer. Vi hoppas öka intresset för deras samlingar, både nationellt och internationellt, samt att visa vad våra fantastiska volontärer kan åstadkomma”, säger John Andersson, internationell koordinator för WLPA”.

Un moviment internacional

Des de l'inici el concurs ha volgut ser internacional. El concurs es basa en el notable èxit de Wiki Loves Monuments, el concurs de fotografia que té lloc cada any entre l'1 i 30 de setembre. Per exemple, a Finlàndia el concurs se centra en escultures a l'aire lliure amb un autor mort fa 70 anys o més. Per altra banda, a Espanya i Àustria es pot fotografiar tota obra situada permanentment en la via pública.

“Amb WLPA també estem tractant de crear consciència sobre les lleis de drets d'autor i el fet que en alguns països la legislació penalitza fer fotos d'obres d'art de propietat pública a l'aire lliure, les mateixes obres per on passeu cada dia de camí a la feina o l'escola”, declara John Andersson.

Perquè sigui més fàcil pels participants trobar les obres adequades pel concurs, els voluntaris de les organitzacions locals de Wikimedia han elaborat llistes a la Viquipèdia amb informació sobre les obres d'art a l'aire lliure. En alguns països, però, l'enfocament ha estat treballar amb els museus nacionals d'art perquè la gent hi pugui anar a fer fotos de les col·leccions del museu que siguin adequades per al concurs.

Das Ziel Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA) Fotowettbewerbs ist es so viele öffentlich zugängliche Kunstwerke unter einer freien Lizenz auf Wikipedias Bilderdatenbank - Wikimedia Comons - zu stellen. Die Aufnahmen können dann von jedem und überall zu jedem Zweck frei eingesetzt werden. Außerdem profitiert die freie Enzyklopädie, die sechstmeistbesuchte Seite im Internet, von einer besseren Erfassung und Bebilderung der Kunstartikel.

"Wir organisieren diesen Wettbewerb und unsere gemeinsame Bildersmmlung von Kunstwerken zu bereichern und diese auf einfachster Weise jedem Menschen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Der Wiki Loves Public Art Wettbewerb wird von Wikimedia Schweden, Europeana und Freiwilligen der nationalen und thematischen Verbänden der Wikimedia organisiert

The hochgeladenen Bilder werden zunächst auf nationaler Ebene von bewertet. Danach werde die zehn Besten aus jedem Teilnehmerland an einer international Jurz weitergegeben. Die Top 3 Fotografien im internationalen Wettkampf werden im Juli bekanntgegeben. Die Preise sind Reisegutscheine in einem Wert von jeweils 500, 300 und 200 Euro. Zusätzlich sponsort Europeana Ausdrucke höchster Qualität von den Siegerfotos, die dann die jeweiligen Gewinner bekommen.

Eine internationale Bewegung

Von Anfang an hat dieser Wettbewerb die Absicht international zu sein. Es wird auf den beeindruckenden Erfolg von dem jährlich im September stattfindenden "Wiki Loves Monuments" Fotowettbewerb gebaut. Letztes Jahr konnte dieser unglaubliche 15.000 Fotografen aus 33 Ländern dazu bringen Sage und Schreibe 350.000 Bilder hochzuladen.

"Das ist der erste Wiki Loves Public Art Fotowettbewerb und ist daher etwas kleiner angesetzt, damit wir das Konzept ausprobieren können. Natürlich hoffen wir in den nächsten Jahren weitere Teilnehmer und Ländern begeistern zu können. All das ist nur durch die Unterstützung von Europeana und die großartigen freiwilligen Wikimedianern möglich," teilt Andersson mit.

Was den Wettbewerb etwas schwieriger gestaltet ist die Mangel an nationalen Datenbanken für Kunstwerke. Zusätzlich sind die Urheberrechtsbestimmungen in jedem Land unterschiedlich, sodass die Art und Austellungsweise der Kunstwerke die für d WLPA aufgenommen werden von Land zu Land unterschiedlich ist. In Finnland, zum Beispiel, können nur öffentlich ausgestellte Kunstwerke, dessen Urheber seit 70 oder mehr Jahren tot ist, fotografiert werden. Wiki Loves Public Art – valokuvauskilpailu taiteen ystäville

Toukokuussa alkavan Wiki Loves Public Art –kilpailun aikana valokuvataan julkisilla paikoilla sijaitsevia veistoksia. Kuvat talletetaan Wikimedia Commons –tietokantaan, missä kuvat ovat kaikkien vapaasti käytettävissä, vaikkapa tietosanakirja Wikipediassa.

Suomen lisäksi Espanjassa, Israelissa, Itävallassa sekä Ruotsissa toukokuussa järjestettävässä Wiki Loves Public Art -kilpailussa osallistujat kuvaavat julkisia taideteoksia, joiden tekijänoikeus on jo rauennut. Kilpailu järjestetään yhdessä nettitietosanakirja Wikipedian taustalla vaikuttavan Wikimedia-säätiön, Euroopan digitaalisen kulttuurin ja taiteen keskus Europeanan sekä vapaaehtoisten kanssa.

תחרות הצילומים הראשונה "ויקי אוהבת אמנות חוצות" מביאה יצירות אמנות לאינטרנט

התחרות יוצאת לדרך בחודש מאי 2013, ובמסגרתה יצאו מתנדבים שיצלמו יצירות אמנות הנמצאות במרחב הציבורי. את התמונות יעלו ברישיון חופשי לאינטרנט, כך שיהיו זמינים עבור מיזמים באינטרנט, כגון ויקיפדיה.
שוודים, ספרדים, פינלנדים, אוסטרלים וישראלים משתפים פעולה במטרה להרחיב ולשפר את הגישה ליצירות אמנות הנמצאות במרחב הציבורי במסגרת תחרות הצילום הבינלאומית "ויקי אוהבת אמנות חוצות" (WLPA), המתחילה בחודש מאי. התצלומים שיצולמו במסגרת התחרות יועלו על ידי הציבור ברישיון חופשי אל מאגר התצלומים פיקיוויקי – אלבום התמונות של ישראל, ומשם למאגר "ויקישיתוף" של קרן ויקימדיה. תצלומים אלו ישמשו את הציבור הרחב, כמו גם אתרים כגון ויקיפדיה בשלל השפות השונות, ויעשירו ערכים ומאמרים שונים.

צוות שופטים בישראל יבחר מבין התצלומים את עשרת התצלומים הטובים ביותר ואלו ישלחו לתחרות הבינלאומית. שלושת התצלומים הטובים ביותר, אשר יוכרזו בחודש יולי, יקבלו פרסים כספיים בשווי 500, 300 או 200 אירו. בנוסף, אתר אירופיאנה ידפיס את הצילומים באיכות גבוהה וישלח לזוכים.

תנועה בינלאומית

Hi,

Wiki Loves Public Art is taking off tomorrow and I wanted to give you a heads up. You are all invited to participate and enrich our articles with great photos of public artworks! Take this opportunity to have a closer look at all the fantastic art around you and upload your pictures to Wikimedia commons! When you participate you first take part in the national contest where you can win nice prizes and if your picture(s) is considered amongst the best (by the national jury) your photos will then also participate in the international contest. At the international contest you have a chance of winning a travel check of up to 500 Euros and a high quality print of your photo, sponsored by Europeana!

In some countries the focus of the contest will be on public artworks outdoors while in some countries it will be on museum collections of old artworks. A great mix that is! In the countries where we are focusing on outdoor artworks, volunteers have worked hard to compile lists of the art collections as there are no existing national lists (can you imagine?). This has been a hard work and this year we are therefore seeing smaller pilots in each country to try out the concept. In Sweden the focus is on artworks in museums and a lot of work has gone into initiating cooperations with Swedish art museums. To be sure where you can take photos, please have a look at your country's website and read more about the contest!

We have created the necessary infrastructure on Wikimedia Commons with a number of Upload Campaigns to get as much metadata as possible in place from the start. The uploaded images will be found here. Please let us know if you have any questions.

I vissa länder är fokuset för tävlingen på offentliga konstverk utomhus medan det i vissa länder kommer att vara på museets samlingar av gamla konstverk. I de flesta länder som deltar har volontärerna arbetat hårt för att sammanställa förteckningar över konstsamlingar eftersom det inte finns några befintliga nationella listor (kan ni tänka er?). Detta har varit ett hårt arbete och detta år vi ser därför mindre piloter i varje land för att prova konceptet. Så ta gärna en titt på ditt lands hemsida och se var du kan ta bilder i år! I Sverige har det varit ett intensivt arbete med att kontakta och diskutera med konstmuseerna om att samarbeta med oss och hela nio stycken kommer nu att delta vilket är jättekul!

Headline: Wiki Loves Public Art – a photo contest bringing art online

[Stockholm, Sweden -- 16 May 2013] – With half way through the Wiki Loves Public Art photo contest – taking place during May 2013 – volunteers in Austria, Finland, Israel, Spain and Sweden have taken over 5,000 pictures of a total of 1,385 public artworks! All of these photos are uploaded under a free license, so that they can be used for example in online projects such as Wikipedia.

The goal of the Wiki Loves Public Art, WLPA contest is to get as many pictures of public art available under a free license on Wikipedia’s online database, Wikimedia Commons. The 5,000 so far uploaded photos can then be seen and used by anyone, anywhere. At the same time the world’s sixth largest website, Wikipedia, will see a boost in its art coverage as photos in the contest can be added to illustrate articles in the online encyclopedia. The contest is organized by Wikimedia Sverige, Europeana and volunteers in the Wikimedia chapters and affiliated groups in each of the participating countries.

“We are doing this to increase our common collection of photos of artworks and to make them easily accessible to everyone through Wikipedia. This is also a fun way to start contributing for volunteers”, says the international WLPA coordinator John Andersson. What has made the contest a bit challenging to organize is that most countries lack a national database of their artworks. In addition the countries participating in the contest have a diverse set of copyright laws, so that the public artworks that can be photographed and uploaded online for the contest differ between countries. For example, in Finland the contest focuses on outdoor sculptures, whose creator has been dead for 70 years or more. In Spain and Austria on the other hand any public artwork can be photographed.

“This has also made a difference in the amount of artworks photographed in different local contests. From Barcelona we have over 4,000 pictures, whereas from countries with stricter copyright laws we understandably have fewer contributions”, states John Andersson. To make it easier for people to find the artworks suited for the contest volunteers in national Wikimedia chapters have put together lists on Wikipedia with information about the outdoor artworks. In some countries the focus has however been on working with the national art museums so that people can go and take photos of the museums' collections that are suitable for the contest.

The photos uploaded for the contest will first be judged nationally, after which the ten best pictures from each country will be sent to the international jury. The prizes for the three internationally best pictures – which will be announced in July – are travel gift certificates for 500 euros, 300 euros and 200 euros and on top of that Europeana has sponsored high quality prints of the winning pictures that will be sent to the winners.

The first Wiki Loves Public Art photo contest – that took place during May 2013 – succeeded beyond expectations as there were a total of 9,250 photos submitted for the contest by 224 contestants in Austria, Finland, Israel, Spain and Sweden. These photos of over 2,155 different artworks are now uploaded under free licenses, so that they can be used for example in online projects such as Wikipedia.

The goal of the Wiki Loves Public Art, WLPA contest was to get as many pictures of public art available under a free license on Wikipedia’s online media database, Wikimedia Commons. The 9,250 contest submissions can now be seen and used by anyone, anywhere. With these pictures also the world’s sixth largest website, Wikipedia, will see a boost in its art coverage as photos in the contest can be added to illustrate articles in the online encyclopedia. The contest is organized by Wikimedia Sverige, Europeana and volunteers in the Wikimedia chapters and affiliated groups in each of the participating countries.

“We are so happy to increase our common collection of photos of artworks with these great number of photos and to make them easily accessible to everyone through Wikipedia. The contest has succeeded beyond our expectations and we cannot wait to organize the contest also next year, hopefully in many more countries”, says the international WLPA coordinator John Andersson from Wikimedia Sverige.

Nearly two thirds of the submissions for the contest come from Barcelona, where the streets are filled with art from Gaudi, Miro and Picasso to mention a few of the most prominent artists. In Spain the Freedom of Panorama laws also allow any artwork to be photographed and the photo then to be published under a free license.

Not all of the participating countries however have as free legal situation, as for example in Finland the photos that are uploaded for the contest have to be of artworks whose creator has been dead for more than 70 years. The diverse copyright laws as well as the fact that most countries lack a national database of their artworks have been the biggest challenges of organizing the contest.

“The volunteers have been amazing in all of the countries in putting together the lists of artworks that can be photographed for the contest, as well as making contacts with museums to let us come and photograph their collections”, states John Andersson.
