Meru county ,Kenya, is a hot and arid region of the country. With this climate, the area has only two rainy seasons. These are the long and short rains seasons. The long rains are from around April to June while the short rains are from November to December.The rest of the year is dominated by the scorching sun. However, in the year 2022, the long rains season was rather short due to climate change and this made the region to become more arid loosing most of its vegetation cover by the time the short rain season was approaching. The photo essay below is about steps taken by Meru University of Science and Technology to rejuvenate the vegetation cover of the school on a part of its engineering complex compound from October 2022 to April 2023.

  • With prolonged and intense sunny season in meru county from June to October 2022, the weatherman finally had some good news for the locals, the short rain season was about in a few days. Meru University took advantage of this predictions and hired some women from the local community to plant grass on the already dry land to regenerate it.One can notice the clear sky as it has been for the better part of the year.

  • Although the threatening nimbus clouds were overcast, the rains delayed against the predictions by some time and the university had to go extra miles and irrigate the grass before it was no more viable. There was sign of life as weeds had started blooming, although they had to be eliminated.

  • January ,after two months of rain, the grass had grown but with the sunny season back,with clouds drifting away, it had to be supplemented by irrigation water to counter the low humidity. The trees had accumulated enough resources to withstand the sun untill the next rain season, as seen with their mass.

  • The vegetation persists the harsh conditions as temperature rises while humidity continues to drastically fall. However,the long rains are still not near and the biosystem has to endure this.
